Grace and Elegance - * CLICK ON PHOTO TO ENHANCE * The hierarchy of Africa’s big cats has the lion at the top of the food chain, followed by the leopard, and then the cheetah. Size and sheer strength sets the lion and leopard ahead, but when it comes to grace and elegance on the hunt the cheetah is in a league of its own. During my two weeks in Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve last June, we had seven encounters with cheetah, three of which we came across in morning light while on the hunt, two of those resulting in success by the cheetah you see here. For many people fortunate to witness this, the chase is of course the most thrilling part, but what gets my heart racing all the more is watching the cheetah's totally focused behaviour, it's fluidity of motion, elegance and grace from the moment it's seen it's prey in the distance as it pads silently forward downwind until it feels it's within striking range. I've only seen lion and leopard hunts unfold in wildlife documentaries before, and these are truly remarkable hunters too for their stealth and raw power, but observing a cheetah in anticipation of it's chase is like watching the most beautiful of music in motion, if such a thing were possible! The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Website: http://ift.tt/15sT0BC | 1x | Fine Art America | Facebook | Flickr | Blog
