I still say one of the bravest things I've ever seen a character do in the comics was Mia after realizing she had HIV, going to her school and telling the other kids about it so that they would be better educated.

I feel like a lot of people who haven’t read Green Arrow 2001 don’t realise how important the speedy title is to Mia Dearden. She isn’t speedy because she’s a young Green Arrow sidekick and that’s just what they’re called. Her being speedy isn’t even about Green Arrow at all.
It’s about her looking up to Roy Harper. She sees in Roy someone who went through hell like her and came out stronger as a hero, a leader, and a friend. And grounded ‘everyday’ hell rather than the time loops and supervillain abductions that normally effect heroes.
(the art here is very questionable but the dialogue is important)
Because Green Arrow didn’t need Speedy. Mia Dearden needed Speedy. Someone who helped her feel that no matter what she’d been through, no matter what her HIV status is, she could be a hero.
