Let It Snow

"Imagine Kili’s Face When He Sees You In the Snow for the First Time"

imagine || Words: 1055 || Characters: Kili, Reader, Fili || Genre: Super fluffy romance || Note: I love Tauriel, but Kili only has eyes for you in this fic, going all the way back to Ered Luin

****

Fili was the first to notice the white papery flecks dancing through the air as he stood by the parlor window in his brother’s home.

“It’s not cold enough to stick, big brother,” Kili said, stoking the fire in the hearth, awaiting your arrival home from work.

“Says who?” You pushed the doorway open just in time to hear Kili’s doubts.

His face brightened upon seeing you. That’s the effect you always had on him.

You closed the door, came into the parlor, and exchanged warm hellos with Fili. Kili greeted you with a kiss on the mouth, and you held him close, keeping him there a while. His sweet lips on yours got rid of the chill.

“Says me!” he said when you finally let him go. He tapped your cold nose and returned to the fire to add another log. “We haven’t had a big snow in ages. Thorin says that after we reclaim the Lonely Mountain and have experienced a few winters there, we’ll see what a real snowstorm is like. So we’ll just have to wait till then.”

You shivered. You always had the same reaction when the subject of taking back the Lonely Mountain was brought up: a deep, fearful cold running down your spine. You didn’t want any of the Dwarves to go, least of all Kili. You liked Ered Luin. Let sleeping dragons lie.

You glanced at Fili looking longingly out of the front window. “I think it will snow, brother-in-law,” you said, “and then this guy will owe us both!”

Kili perked up. “A wager, huh?”

“Sounds good to me,” Fili said, turning to the two of you, an idea quickly forming in his mind. “Snowball fight, us two” - Fili pointed rapidly between you and he “- against Kili and Mother. Loser makes hot chocolate for everyone for a week, every night after supper.”

Ooo. You didn’t like those teams. Lady Dis was no one to mess with.

Fili read your mind. “Oh, come on! I can throw a snowball just as hard as she can!”

“Well, I don’t know…” you said doubtfully.

Kili laughed. “There won’t be any snowball fights or serving of hot chocolate because it won’t get cold enough to stick!”

“Now you sound like Uncle,” Fili said.

Kili growled.

“Anyway, we’ll see,” Fili said, grabbing his scarf from a nearby chair and draping it around his neck. “I’m heading back home before the blizzard comes.” He came over and kissed you on the cheek, pulled on Kili’s ear as a way of saying goodbye, and left.

Fili’s departure was followed by another quiet evening at home with Kili. You shed your coat, hat and gloves and slipped into loose trousers and a long shirt.

Kili closed the curtains and lit several pillar candles around the room to add to the ambience in the parlor, where you both liked to sit on the floor in front of the hearth and read to each other after supper, tell really bad jokes, play with your new Yorkie, Pudding, and doze off briefly before getting up lazily and heading for bed. This contentment could go on for hours, and often did.

When you got up to stretch and go to your bedroom to turn down the covers, leaving Kili and Pudding snoring on the large comfortable floor pillows, a stillness in the air beckoned you to the front window. You pulled back the curtain.

Snow!

Not just a light dusting. A thick blanket.

Not just a thick cotton blanket. A huge down comforter of snow. And it was still coming down!

You spun around and looked at your sleeping husband and pup. You almost called for Kili, but then had a better idea.

You quietly redressed in your heavy clothes. Then you opened the door and made kissing sounds, getting the dog’s attention.

“Pudding! Come here, girl!” you called softly. She scampered up and ran over to you, sniffing at the strange white cold fluff several times, then stepping out cautiously.  Before long, she started bounding about happily.

The chilly wind blew through the small house, and Kili stirred. He lifted his head up and turned around, blinking and rubbing his eyes. “My love, why are you letting in the cold?” he asked.

He didn’t see you bend down, make a snowball, and throw it at him.

That certainly woke him up!

He gasped, wiped the wetness from his face, and rose to his feet.

“Dress warmly, now!” you said, cackling as you closed the door and giggled, waiting for him while you tossed a stick for Pudding to fetch. Snow continued to fall and cover everything in peace.

Two minutes later, Kili stepped outside and closed the door behind him, coat and hat on, ready to continue the fight.

But he stopped almost as soon as his boots sunk through the snow, frozen.

You had a wide smile on your face. The steam from your mouth drifted up and around your head, creating a constant halo, lit from above by an enormous full silver moon. The snow fell onto your covered head and shoulders, but kissed the ends of your hair peeking from your hat, briefly glowing on your curls like the tiniest of lanterns.

“Plotting your revenge?” you asked, putting another snowball together.

Kili shook his head. He wasn’t smiling.

If he wasn’t delighted at seeing Pudding playing in the snow - which had to be the cutest thing ever - or at the fact that there was indeed a thick layer of snow on the ground, something had to be wrong.

You walked over to him, looking worried.

“Kili?”

He stared at you a bit longer, then cupped your face lovingly in his frosty hands, and finally grinned.

“You are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.”

He brought his lips to yours. This time it was he who wouldn’t let go so quickly. You melted in his kiss, in his love, in his sincerity.

“Beautiful, and…” you stepped back, lifted your arm and threw the snowball at his left shoulder. “…a very good shot!”

You ran off, with Pudding barking and chasing after you. Kili laughed and began gathering the snow at his feet.

“I’m going to enjoy my nightly hot chocolate!” you said.

“No, I will!” Kili said, catching up to you in an instant and pelting you with snow, then a million warm kisses.
