That was a poor kid being possessed by a demon. There was no reason to think he wasn’t still alive and could be saved.

I HAVE to headcanon this as intended to show that Dean and Sam are at a low point and not doing things right here (and Mama Tran was half crazy with grief and vengefulness having just heard that Kevin’s dead). The scene was juxtaposed with Cas doing things right and choosing NOT to kill someone tied up in a chair, so maybe… maybe that was actually a thought.

But this wasn’t the first time the Winchesters callously killed a possessed person when there was ample opportunity to exorcise instead… so I don’t know.

Just please, SPN, try to remember that possessed people are still people?
