Joel has only been in Jackson for two days, and in that time, I haven’t woken up alone once. We have a lot of lost time to make up for, he had said in jest, but based solely on the fact we haven’t spent more than a minute apart, I know he really wasn’t kidding. However, when I blink awake, the room still shrouded in darkness, the first thing I realize is how empty the bed feels next to me. Sure enough, when I turn to check, Joel’s warm body isn’t next to mine.

Sorry, wait, don't they say in the very first episode that a cure isn't achievable? When they talk to the specialist, she says a vaccine isn't possible.
I think we're meant to lose sight of that because you always want there to be a fix and a hope. But it doesn't change the reality, even if the Fireflies found someone willing to tell them otherwise based on... no evidence or experience.
Ellie would have died for nothing.

okay so this is how i understand it... you can't vaccinate against fungus, you can only kill it. i believe that's how it is anyway. i'm not a doctor but i've had a couple of fungal infections and it wasn't something i could get a shot for, it was soap and water and topical medicine and prayers essentially.
so really that doctor just has a savior complex. they also would've needed stem cell medicine, which wasn't a thing in that timeline i don't think. but furthermore, that doctor didn't know how to make vaccines. with what lab and with what equipment was he going to reverse engineer and study this? test it? manufacture it? distribute it? he just wanted to play God and knew that if he bullshitted people, they would protect him. kind of like Eugene in The Walking Dead.
in conclusion, Joel Miller did nothing wrong but even if he did, that was so sexy of him.
