hang on a second..... hold On i need a minute..... the night vale writers really just understand love huh....... [from episode 55]
Welcome to Night Vale poster compilation
carlos records all of cecil’s bits on NVCR. he’s justifies it with “it’s supporting evidence for night vale’s various phenomena", but it’s pretty obvious he records it for himself.
there’s a reason no “episodes” of welcome to night vale exist before carlos’ arrival, and only cecil’s airtime is “on file”.
a redraw of something old because i was feeling nostalgic. i have no idea if this ancient headcanon still holds up though, ha ha.
Here’s my ‘Welcome to Night Vale’ Halloween party menu! - Night Vale’s eye logo pizza (from Big Rico’s pizza) -John Peters (you know, the farmer)’s imaginary (pop)corn. -Cotton candy Glow Cloud (ALL HAIL). -Carlos’ green Margarita shots (’cause we are really into science these days) -Secret Piña Colada to avoid the Secret Police (and remember, if you see something, say nothing and drink to forget) -Khoshekh cupcakes with black tea that is mostly void, partially stars ;)
Good Halloween, Night Vale, and good night!~
so I’ve been relistening to welcome to night vale…
y’all i could write a whole E S S A Y about young queer folk who dreamed of living in Night Vale. We were so enamoured by this town that, at its core, was about acceptance, whether that acceptance was of gender diversity and sexuality, or for non-existent angels and natural disasters. All were met with affirmation and were treated as the norm.
Cecil is in love with the handsome scientist that’s came into town? Yup. Shouldn’t go into the dog park? Checks out. Librarians are monsters? Figures. Diane Crayton’s kid Josh not only experiments with gender but also with his own species? He’s a teenager, what do you expect?
Night Vale was never presented as traditionally safe, not once. There are very few episodes where deaths aren’t reported in the town, from some disaster or government testing or supernatural entity.
It became a sort of joke on tumblr where whenever someone would say they dreamed of living in Night Vale, they were being stupid and naive because Night Vale is a dystopia. Desert Bluffs is terrifying in a very different way, but Night Vale was horrifying too. But it became a safe place, despite the death and terror and weirdness, because it was a place of acceptance.
In the Year 2 finale, Kevin remarks that they can “fix” Janice, Cecil’s niece, who is a wheelchair user. Up until then, it had never been mentioned that she uses one, and the rage at the very idea that anything should be changed about her just because she’s different is a major part of Steve Carlsburg’s character arc. No one is expected to have to change themselves in Night Vale, difference is expected and celebrated.
So yeah, Night Vale is, by definition a dystopia. But what does that say, that in spite of that, so many of us found a home there because we knew we would be accepted? A whole community of queer kids who felt so rejected and were bullied and marginalised by the people that raised them that they fantasised about moving to a desert town where you would probably die in a freak accident. And there’s something tragic but also absolutely beautiful about that to me.
Hot take but podcasts if done right with creative and original ideas are a really good way of resurrecting radio from the days before television, and I for one adore it. There’s something so intimate about a podcast, some special quality that lets you bond with the characters in a unique way. You may know that the podcast is fictional, but that doesn’t stop you from imagining a world in which these characters could really exist, where we could have these adventures with them. Idk I just really love podcasts, man.
Cecil? I have to go. Be patient with me. We have our phones. We have our voices, and you have the best voice of them all.
or, the lines from wtnv that truly messed me up
Alright so while technically I have been working on this for a few weeks, it's my prompt event and I'll do what I want. There are no rules I can't break, especially since there are no rules in the first place.
Night Vale November, day 1: beginning.
I sketched this in class a little while ago and decided to digitize it. I'm still a little on the fence about some of my design choices but overall really like it.
hey y'all! in case you didn't know, I'm currently obsessed with the absolutely amazing podcast Welcome to Night Vale. as such, I made myself a lockscreen with a wtnv quote! (from ep. 25, "One Year Later.") Feel free to use it for personal use, just please don't pass it off as your own work!
Some more small thing about Night Vale.
Cecil, where are you? hi guys it’s me again learning how to make gifs also I wanted to make another version of it with Station Management beside the studio screaming or smth and now I found out that this gif is too fast, damn commissions open!
Something else, altogether. Something pure, and innocent
Follow up to my big retrospective on “Condos,” here is Carlos’ first major appearance and the first time he was voiced by Dylan Marron. This is the conversation that changed the game on Carlos, and I still love it for all the reasons I outlined in that post. /chef’s kiss
Remember to go buy “Condos” on Bandcamp, it’s chock full of hilarity and amazing writing and it’s only a dollar.
LGBTQ Audio Drama Rec Request
I need some recs, y’all. Here’s the deal:
- Audio drama podcasts; preferably available on Stitcher, but willing to download another app for some really good podcasts
- LGBTQ main characters; romance is a BIG bonus
- Pretty open on genres, though preference for the paranormal/supernatural, sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery
I have poured through lists here on Tumblr, trolled Reddit, etc for new podcasts to listen to, but I want to hear your personal recs, not just some endless lists that mean nothing.
I listen to Welcome to Night Vale, love Dreamboy and anxiously await its return, devoured Alice Isn’t Dead, and am currently listening to King Falls AM. I do have Love and Luck, The Penumbra, The Two Princes, and Kaleidotrope on my list already, though feel free to let me know your opinions on any of these shows - if they’re worth keeping or I should ditch them.
