I made a fanbind of the incredible Anastasis by @chthonion!! This fic series is truly something special, and even on my first read I knew that I wanted to bind it. This was also my first bookbind where I fully felt like I knew what I was doing, and I'm incredibly proud of how it came out!!

Why Not Both by Varnes

A long time ago, I wondered if there was ever a fanfic that actually tried to resolve the whole "Hermione and Ron catfight over Viktor Krum during the Yule Ball and in Book 7". I thought, why can't they both fall in love with Krum?

Fast forward to a month ago when someone recced a fanfic in the Renegade Discord server. It was this one: why not both

Astolat’s Complete Person of Interest Fic!

I am continuing on my quest to bind all of @astolat ‘s fic in the fandoms I read. This is a two volume set of all of her Person of Interest fic, taking my collection of her works to 9 volumes. I decided to title each volume after one story—and how could I resist the bookbinding pun of “Dangerous if Unbound”?

These books have been two or three months in the works. I did the typeset way back over the summer, printed it in early September, and had to leave the folded pages sitting in my press for weeks because I didn’t have time to even do the sewing. Then I had a week where I had to make time for bookbinding or I was going to go insane, and was able to get them done AND teach myself how to make slip cases.

Books and case are all bound in black buckram. Foil decorations on the books. Endpapers are painted textured paper. Silk endbands. Inside of the box has homemade paste papers.

My second bind had to be this Robb Stark centric masterpiece that has lived rent free in my brain since December 2023. I wanted to get this finished before the year anniversary hit in December.

I love this bind and she is my beloved second born but holy hell I’m glad she is done.

In all honesty, this bind was cursed from the off. Everything that could have gone wrong with this bind went wrong. I had to resew the signatures because wood oil, I made my design slightly too big so adding it to the cover was wonky and I melted parts of the black vinyl adding my silver vinyl to the book cloth to name but a few mistakes. I didn’t dare try to trim her edges, lord knows where I would have ended up.

All that said I’m still proud of her and wanted to share. Done is better than perfect and I hope I look back in a year and see how far I have truly come.

Continuing my Astolat bookbinding collection, I bound Royal Flush by @astolat!! My favorite Game of Thrones fic, and one that's I've gone back to re-read more times than I can count!! I'm super happy with how this bind turned out; I had learned a lot in binding Heal Thyself that made binding this one much easier. Also have I mentioned that I've fallen in LOVE with holographic foil??? I've uploaded the cover/spine/back PNGs here! Feel free to use, though credit would be appreciated <3

My first full-sized bookbind!! This is Heal Thyself by @astolat; ie the fic I loved so much that I decided to take up bookbinding just so I could have a physical copy of it! It was definitely one hell of a learning curve, and while it certainly isn't perfect I'm super happy with how it came out <3 I've uploaded the cover/spine/back PNGs here! The Crown of the Summer Court - Astolat

This is the second book I made for Renegade Guild's Tiny Books Bang event.

Cork veneer half-binding with inset thaumatrope. (not sure it qualifies as a 'half-binding', because it actually is one piece of cork veneer... with huge cut outs.)

And if you're wondering what a thaumatrope is... it's an optical toy. On a disk are 2 separate pictures on each side. Strings are attached to the sides of the disk and when twirling the strings, the pictures seem to merge into one.

Draco Malfoy, It’s Your Lucky Day by Faith Wood

Even though he's unarmed, injured, lost in the Forbidden Forest, and facing a possible murder charge, Draco Malfoy gets lucky.

💥Binderary Bind # 3 💥

A collection of 15 stories by @greygerbil.( Highly HIGHLY recommend their fics)

For the book title, I chose The Shield,The Spear, The Sword and chose another 14 of their stories (it was a struggle not to include all of them but i got tired of typesetting 😅)

I made individual title pages for all of them (pic doesnt include all)

I did keep the drop caps the same in every story as well as the same line break image (a cute little shield,spear, sword combo i made on canva) to add continuity.

I tried a couple new techniques this bind.

Did my first ever rounded spine as well as some (easy and fake) raised bands. This was heavily inspired by those old traditional leather bound books.

Bound: Grounds for Divorce by Tepre

For some reason, after I posted this, it disappeared. So here it is again.

I love everything about this bind. The end.

(Did I hit the lemon theme hard? Yes. Do I regret it? I do not.)

Usually, I'd complain about whatever I messed up here but I didn't mess up anything! It's perfect! I love every little bit of it! (Okay, if pushed, I'd say I wish I'd used slightly darker paint on the borders of the cover, but I also like how they're kind of invisible.)

Let's see. I bought the lemon graphics off etsy, and used them all over the book. The end papers are just a bunch of them layered. I love them. I even foiled one on the other side of the endpapers, just for fun.

The stenciling came out beautifully. The vinyl gave me no trouble. I don't even know what to say about this except I can't wait to read it.

this was actually the first typeset i started working on for the exchange, so it's a little rougher formatting-wise than the others, but i learned a TON from it!! so its fine lol

First Encounter by Lyris Malachi

I'm sure some of you have heard of the infinitely iconic My Immortal, the fanfic that was the talk of the Harry Potter fandom in it's heyday. But here's a secret for you:

There was another fanfic, also during My Immortal's rise in 2006, that was also infamously talked about - the Hogwarts x Giant Squid fic.

I am not joking.

Woah, did 2023 fly by, or was it just me?! 10 unique projects, 8 different fandoms, 56 books later, here we are!

Cheers to all the new techniques I got to experiment with this year: foiling, edge marbling, dust jackets, painted covers, cut outs, HTV, infusible ink, sewing my own endbands, pushing my design limits in Word, and making my own cassette mixtape!

Another incredible thing that happened in 2023 was the @renegadepublishing Retreat! As one of the organizers and an attendee, I had such a blast meeting with other binders and sharing such a special event! We also had 14 local meetups that I was able to attend, and I was able to participate in Binderary, FFWAD, & the Bound Exchange ❤️ Here’s to even more fun in 2024 🎉

The book I made for the fourth annual Renegade Book Exchange, National Service by burntcopper.

This was so much fun to design and create. I got to use my new Silhouette and this is the best I've ever managed to hand foil. Absolutely thrilled with how the use of the latch came out, I was scared the hinges on the side with no textblock spine would just collapse but they held together!

Bound: Nothing but you on my mind by @moonflower-rose

You may already know that I love this fic to a ridiculous degree, so when I wanted to quickly typeset and bind a short-ish fic, this was an easy choice.

I got a color printer, so this was a test for that, though I didn’t use that much color. But the cover was also a bit of an experiment, I’ve never done this kind of cover, with a fabric spine and paper. (I forget what it’s called.) It was great for using up a small amount of book cloth.

The best part about using paper for the cover is that I was able to use adhesive vinyl instead of HTV for the title! I mean, it’s a pain in the ass for other reasons, but way less stressful.

Anyway, if you haven’t read this fic, you really should. Or you can listen to my podfic of it (I told you I loved it!)

The fonts used for the title and chapter heads and drop caps are all in the Goodlife family. Even the little frame around the title on the cover.
