Sterek AU: where Stiles and Derek get away to enjoy pumpkin- spiced Fall weekend.

“How about this one?” Stiles asks, pointing to a pumpkin.

 “The side is flat,” Derek says.

 “That one?”

“Too small.” Stiles points to another. “It looks rotten.”

Stiles huffs and crosses his arms. “Look, Goldilocks of Pumpkins, why don’t you pick a pumpkin then?” Stiles taps his foot as he waits. Derek scans the group of pumpkins, then chooses two near the back.

“These.”

“Okay.” Stiles starts walking towards the attendant.

“Aren’t you even going to look at them?” Derek asks.

Stiles shrugs as he hands the lady cash. “They’re pumpkins, dude. You’re the one who was all picky about which ones we got. I just want to carve into them and then leave them on the back porch until around Thanksgiving when they’re molded and rotten.”

“You’re disgusting,” Derek says, holding a large pumpkin in each of his arms. Stiles leans over and kisses his cheek.

“But you love me.”

Derek just grunts.

Stiles suddenly stops and darts away to the right. “Ooh! Pumpkin donuts!” Derek hears him yell as he watches Stiles run towards a booth. Derek readjusts the slipping pumpkin in his grip as he trails after him. “I bought you one,” Stiles says through a mouth of donut. He swallows, and points to a bucket. “I also want to bob for apples.”

“That’s so gross,” Derek says, wrinkling his nose.

“Oh, shut up, you eat bunnies,” Stiles says as he cradles the paper bag with the donuts between the pumpkin and Derek’s arm. Stiles moves onto his knees as he grips the side of the barrel. He leans down, his mouth open as he tries to bite into one of the apples. They keep sliding out of his mouth as he bites down. “This is so much easier on TV.”

“It’s not that hard,” Derek says.

“Oh?” Stiles asks, turning around to look at Derek. “Fine then, why don’t you show me how it’s done.”

“No.”

“That’s what I thought.”

Derek huffs, his face pinched in a scowl. He sets down the pumpkins and donuts, and gently pushes Stiles out of the way. He leans forward and closes his mouth around the apple, extending his canines slightly to pierce into the fruit. He straightens, apple securely in his mouth. The people around the booth clap, and Stiles shoots him an exasperated eye roll. Derek takes the apple from his mouth and hands it to Stiles with a shit-eating grin.

“I saw what you did there,” Stiles says, biting into the apple. “Cheater McCheaterson.”

“I did no such thing,” Derek says, picking the pumpkins back up.

“Liar.”

Derek smirks, and Stiles slides his hand easily into Derek’s back pocket and offers him the apple.

Derek is sprawled in front of the fire in his underwear, his eyes closed as the warmth seeps into his skin. The night is cool, and they’ve created a small nest of blankets around the fire. He opens his eyes when he hears Stiles padding across the floor. Stiles is completely naked, the firelight casting a warm glow across his pale skin. Derek smiles as he watches Stiles lowers himself to the floor, careful not to spill the two steaming mugs in his hand.

“Do you like my Jack-o-lantern?” Stiles asks, glancing over to the fireplace where the two pumpkins are alit on both sides of the hearth. Stiles had tried for a complicated Batman design he found online, but it turned out to look more like an abstract piece of art.

“It’s…different,” Derek says, smiling into his cider. The hot liquid is sweet against his tongue, with a burst of spice. “Oh my god, this is fantastic.”

“My mother’s special recipe,” Stiles says, smiling into his cup distractedly. “She always made it for me and my dad when we carved pumpkins.”

“Mom liked hot chocolate,” Derek said. “But we always ate candy when we carved pumpkins.”

“Do werewolves go trick-or-treating? Did you dress up, or did you just wolf out and pretend?” Stiles grins as he nudges Derek’s calf with his toes.

“Yes, we go trick-or-treating,” Derek rolls his eyes. “How long will it take before you realize I grew up just like you?”

“Just with more hair,” Stiles says before taking a sip from his mug. He glances at the pumpkins. “My pumpkin is ugly.”

“It’s not,” Derek says.

“You must really love me,” Stiles says. “You’re lying to spare my feelings.” Stiles sets his cup down and crawls over to Derek and straddles his lap. He hooks his hands behind his head. “But at least it’s not boring like yours. Triangle eyes and a jagged mouth? Really?”

“Stiles, shut up,” Derek says, leaning forward and kissing him.

His mouth tastes like apples and cinnamon, like pumpkins and fall, like home.

What kind of sorcery is this?! I can never turn more than 10 cards in sequence because they just refuse to cooperate and you have like, what, 35? 40?! HOW?!?!

40 in the tree strap above! The most I ever tried was 44 for this ramshorn strap below - that was tough, but also ok because the groups turned separately? I think my hands would murder me if I tried to go any higher on my backstrap setup though ;) I think the trick is maintaining appropriate tension!

@diamondot speaking for myself, i just decided to learn it one day a few years ago (i had a viking phase ok) and simply started with it. It's surprisingly easy since all the info is available on the net. Honestly, i don't remember where i started since it has been so long ago and now i just browse pinterest for patterns alone. Google tablet weaving or card weaving (same thing, different names) patterns and some basic explanations and yt vids for how to turn and weave the stuff. Things like

S and Z threading are there for a reason, so mind your card orientation. Start with some easy pattern like simple wave or diamonds above, 6 - 10 cards are good for your first project. Don't lose hope in initial stage. Streching and threading all that yarn can take anything between 20 minutes and 3 hours depending on how big is the pattern and how skilled you are. Since you need some lenghts to secure ends and to turn cards, use about 40 cm more than wished lenght of your final product. Secure lose ends after threading through cards so you won't end with a bundled mess. Streching/knotting them to something is one way. Taping each card threads together or using weights (check pictures below) is another way (good only for shorter stuff though). Cards could be made out of anything as long as they have smooth edges and rounded corners. Cardboard, thicker plastic sheet, literal cards cut into squares with holes punched through them, whatever. These are mine 2 decks, minus cards i am using atm.

When you start weaving and pattern looks like a total mess, try turning cards in opposite directions. It usualy solves the problem (all that forward/backward can be a bit tricky and mirroring motions/patterns/card orientation can be confusing at first seemingly messing all your work even though you are doing everything right technicaly, just in opposite order/direction). Don't lose your hope. I still manage to mess up like first 5cm of every other work i start. It's not an issue as that start usualy gets cut off anyway (the tension is not right for at least first 4 rows, aka 1 full card rotation, until all threads go up and down at least once no matter what you do. Don't sweat it). You don't need any fancy startup either. Historicaly, people used to weave like this and this and this:

I just strech the thing between 2 chairs myself. Door knobs work as well and so does staircase railing. Wherever you have some space. Long hair clips are your friend, especialy when you are done with weaving for the day and you don't want stuff to tangle

Hi. I may be late to reply but i'm in a weaving mood so here we are.

The thing is that the technique looks complicated due to the fact that there is 100 something and that number alone is scary. But. Actually several buts.

But number 1 - the technique is OLD. Meaning - while being somewhat tedious just like any other textile craft, it has been used and learned for a long long time and there's plenty of resources (check out links above or any youtube video explaining the process) of varying difficulty from complicated af to easy peasy lemon squeezy with closed eyes

But number 2 - there is only one core principle/step you need to understand and that is when some threads go from up to down or from down to up (aka when they cross), you need another thread going in between so they won't simply snap back again. That's it. That's the basic principle behind every weaving ever. What card weaving does compared to standard weave is that instead of a single thread going up and down in the single row, you get 2 or 3 or 4 or 6 or whatever number of threads your pattern calls for in the same row

But number 3 - the number of rows = number of cards. Simple as that. Cards turn around to make a cord like when you are twisting 2 or 4 or whatever numbers of threads to make a rope. If some of those threads have different colours, you get a repeating pattern.

But number 4 - card orientation or S/Z orientation or whatever other fancy name for the twisting direction simply means that if you turn all your card in the same way at the same time, which one of them will make the twisted rope in this / angle and which one will do that in this \ angle. That's it. That's the whole mystery between S/Z threading.

But number 5 - you can start with as little as 4 cards to make a custom set of shoe laces or a key strap or whatever and call yourself a weaver. Because you did that. And it was nice. And it was easy. You just turn and thread and turn and thread and then you keep repeating this while watching a movie or something. There's no need for the math finals level of concentration here.

But number 5 - no one, literally NO ONE starts with a pattern like this

No. Everybody starts with something like this

Keep it simple, keep it easy, make 10cm and be done if you want to. It's perfectly fine.

But number 6 - you don't need any fancy items for starting. No hooks, no needles, no loom, no anything. If you have 2 balls of yarn in different color or some remains of your old cross stitch project or whatever and some card-like stuff you won't be sad for making holes in it, you are all set. Back side of the sketch pad is good. Poker cards cut to squares are good. A sturdy enough sheet of plastic is also good. You remember that old pexeso pairs stack you didn't touch since you were 9? Guess what!

My point is that if this looks like something you may be interested in, then you can absolutely try doing it for literally zero cost other than your time.

This reminds me that I have my Thor’s Hammer tablet weaving project still sitting in the closet untouched for the last few (almost 3?) years...  I need to get back to that eventually.

I'm glad people who didn't know who are discovering it's a cover, not just because Trent Reznor deserves that much, but because I think the fact that Cash did not write it is crucial to the power of his version. This is a young man's song about suffering, about addiction and self-destruction in youth. And Cash is, in the most majestic possible way, taking that and going "oh kid, you have no idea", and changes the meaning without changing the lyrics (except for a single word). In his voice, on his face, in his aged hands on the guitar and piano, it becomes about the agonising brevity of life, the irretrievability of mistakes, and the inevitable loss of everything, including a recognisable self. But the creativity of repurposing only shows if you can still see what was originally there.

I've been griping about the normalization of identity outing via social media for a while now. To put it simply, it's become almost some weird societal requirement that if you don't have every detail listed about yourself in your Twitter/FB/etc. bio, then it means you have "something to hide" or that you're not as "verifiable" because your account looks indistinct from that of a bot.

But that societal norm has really only benefited the people who profit off of that information in some way, whether it's through selling user data or through weaponizing details about a person against them.

I know that a lot of us love to use the fun little labels and acronyms in our bio that help others like us identify us as a 'safe person' or as someone who's in the same social/racial/identity groups as them. We're humans, we love to categorize things, it's in our nature (and it's fun!)

But if there's any time to start regulating that habit and challenging the norm that you're obligated to include all your personal info online - it's now.

There was a time when sock puppet accounts were expected and typical, not "suspicious".

There was a time when even age-sex-location was considered "too much information", but once it became the norm, we only EVER gave our personal information beyond generic ASL to people who we knew both online and in real life, or at the very least, people who we had known online for a significant enough amount of time that they had proved to be trustworthy (and even then, we didn't owe that information to anyone, ever; there are forum friends who I made online 10+ years ago and still talk to who do not know my personal information beyond broad strokes).

There was a time when simply being an avatar with a funny username was enough. And it still is enough, but massive platforms like Facebook and Twitter have been brainwashing us for years to believe that's not the case, under the guise of, "You wouldn't want to be dishonest, would you?" Through these same norms, we were led to believe that anime profile pictures are cringe, that having a fake online name is stupid, that the photos of you having fun at social events have to be taken JUST right otherwise you might imply to others that you're not actually having fun.

And considering how long these platforms have been around now, we have entire generations of children now who have been born and raised on that version of the ZuckMusk web, who have been taught that it "protects them" to express to everyone publicly their age, their school, their workplace, their family members, everything about themselves, because to not do so would be disingenuous.

None of this is to imply that the Internet was "safer" back in the day. I definitely should not have been on the Internet as much as I was when I was 13 in the late 2000's, it definitely did not benefit my brain development or my social skills. But the version of the Internet we currently exist in now is one that's been predicated on the false sense of security - the belief that if you're honest, everyone else has to be, too.

We've always had ways of identifying our safe people - by participating in the communities that we know are designed around our hobbies, our interests, our people. They might be small, they might not be as "cool" as the idea of netting yourself a big following of thousands of people, but they're also a lot safer and more genuine than that idealized following ever could be.

Don't feel pressured to include every bit of information about yourself in your bio. Even on Facebook, there's no rule that says you have to list your workplace, your school, your family members. There's no rule that says you have to list your personality type, queer labels, and neurodivergent disorders in your Twitter bio. There's no rule that you have to "prove" your life is real and fulfilled through the verification of photos, location tagging, and open-book sharing. If you share those photos, it should be because you genuinely want to share them, not because you feel some societal pressure to live up to others' expectations.

And I guarantee you, even your local mutuals on Facebook - your former classmates, family friends, distant relatives, coworkers, etc. - do not actually give that much of a damn about your personal life that they should be owed that much of a look into it on a daily basis. They've got their own shit going on, they literally do not need to know every detail about you.

I know it sounds scary. It also sounds kind of boring, when we've been used to a certain "way" of browsing and participating for years, that if we don't do so, it feels like being in the "out group" and that we're "breaking the rules". But I promise you, after spending over half my life online, those rules do not exist or benefit anyone who wouldn't profit off that information.

They're especially helpful for getting updates from your favorite pages and sites directly to your browser WITHOUT having to worry about stupid algorithm bullshit picking and choosing what you see. Make your formal Facebook accounts that are clean of personal information and present the most neutral, safe-for-work version of yourself and keep the fun stuff to the secret profiles and chat groups that are just for you and friends/family/etc!! It might be "inconvenient" to have multiple accounts for the same purpose, but it's also INCREDIBLY freeing and can make your online experience both safer and more enjoyable.

Being "less" of yourself online does not make you any less you. It is your identity - you do not owe any amount of it to anyone beyond yourself. And in times like these, your identity is your greatest asset. Protect it.
