The U.S. instruction manual to Super Mario Bros. for the NES referred to the Koopa as a tribe that used Black Magic to mess with the peaceful dumb-hat wearing citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. We didn't meet the koopa's exalted priest-wizards until the SNES era, when Kamek and the extreme sect of magikoopas blasted Mario with geometric sorcery. Guys, Kamek is really cool.
