Hi I know it's been a while since you've updated, but I want you to know something. I always loved seeing your crabs, especially Benny, I felt a special connection with her since I am a trans woman with the same name. I don't meet many ladies that share my name so Benny is an inspiration to me. She is a queen and I will always remember her. Thank you for all the crab pictures over the years, I still enjoy looking through the archive from time to time
I'm so glad that you enjoyed my silly crab pictures! I posted to try to bring a little more joy to the Internet, or at least my little corner of it, and I'm glad that it gave that to you. I hope you have a wonderful day, and may you live your life with as much enthusiasm and confidence as my Benny did!
thank you so much for all of the wonderful posts of your crabs, giving them up must have been a very hard decision for you but it was one that truly respects and considers the wellbeing of them, again thank u for caring so much about these often mistreated creatures and for sharing your crabs with all of us ❤️
You're very welcome! I got my crabs without having done a ton of research but as I learned better I made the changes they needed. Which included when I was no longer able to give them what they needed. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing my crab pictures and hope that you have a wonderful day!
So sorry to hear about the crabs. I loved seeing benny's antics and I always felt a certain kinship with her, since we're name buddies. I don't meet many other girls named ben (she was a girl, yes?)
Thank you! I do miss the crabs, but my life just doesn't have the time to devote to more animals. Benny was a girl, you were correct there! I named her long before I found that out, but it just sort of fit her so I didn't want to change it.
Tumblr didn't notify me that I had some asks in the box... Couple of answers coming!
This is something close to my heart as a hermit crab mama! As beach & vacation season kicks off, gift shops will sell hermit crabs & tell you they can live in a tiny cage with a sponge. It is not true. I made this video in hopes to try to educate. You can often find large tanks on Marketplace or Craigslist for sale at a much cheaper price than a pet shop. Rubbermaid dishes can be used for water dishes. Needlepoint canvas can be used as ladders. There are a lot of DIY tips & crab central station is an excellent online resource for learning proper care. If you bring several home & one or two doesn’t survive, it is because they go through so much stress before they reach us. The pet trade can be ugly & brutal sometimes. We don’t want to add to that. You can also look into hermit crab adoption if you are interested!
Edit: You can find us on Instagram @ happycrabitat if you’d like to follow!
I had my hermit crabs for 12 years, and two of them lived over a decade. One lasted the whole 12 years. If properly cared for, hermit crabs live a LONG TIME. Please don't buy them as a cheap, short lived, throwaway pet.
You may have noticed the past few days I’ve posted pictures captioned with “last picture I have of” some of the crabs. Back in December 2020 I rehomed the crabs and I’ve been posting pictures I had taken before they went to their new home.
When I first got my crabs I was in a totally different place in life. I had done research into them and they fit my life at the time, but I didn’t fully consider the implications of their life span and the changes my life would go through during that same period. Twice I had to have family care for them for years at a time while I was on another continent, and moving them 5 times in 12 years for work was hard on everyone involved. Looking at a 6th move with them this summer was too much, especially since I usually have had at least one crab die during a move due to not being able to keep the tank conditions stable while driving from state to state.
I found someone local who already had crabs and knew the care they needed. I gave her all of my supplies and the crabs who were alive at the time - unfortunately, Benny had passed during a molt so it was just Larry, Wavy, and Moe. Last I heard, the crabs are doing well in their new home with their new friend.
I started The Daily Hermit nearly 13 years ago and it has been quite the project (even if it wasn’t totally daily during periods where the crabs were with family). I hope that I brought joy to whoever found my little corner of Tumblr. It has been a lot of fun, and I hope those of you out there who still have crabs will give your crabs a treat for me!
Last picture I have of Benny.

Hanging down - will he climb down? Or is he climbing up?
Um Benny...you feeling okay?
The castle roof seems like a fine place to hang out.
