Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne prove there's life in The Old Guard (2020) yet. #Review Netflix’s latest franchise starter initially does a good job of conveying the experiential tedium of immortality as it introduces us to a band of immortal warriors who have been making their way through history acting as soldiers of fortune but after a sluggish start, it manages to deliver a thrilling finale and sets the stage for a sequel which should be able to have a bit more fun now the heavy expositional lifting has been done.

Disney's reanimated version of The Lion King is Hakuna Meh-tata
There’s probably a very good reason William Shakespeare didn’t turn to the flora and fauna of Africa when originally staging “Hamlet” and my money is on the inability of big cats to emote properly because that’s one of the biggest problems with this ‘live-action’ Lion King has. Oh, it’s still a great story, competently told but it’s never more than a pale, exquisitely rendered, CGI shadow of its…

Sherlock Gnomes (2018) Review
Following in the footsteps of the Man Of Steel and Captain America, Gnomeo and Juliet become the latest characters to have their sequel hijacked by a bunch of different characters as the franchise tries to position itself as a vehicle to reimagine classic British literature, a sort of anthology of garden toy stories.
When garden gnomes mysteriously vanish all over London, including Gnomeo and…

The Martian (2015) Review
There comes a point in “The Martian” where you have to start reminding yourself that it’s just a movie and that this stuff hasn’t really happened. The film will inevitably draw comparisons with “Interstellar” but it shares more of its dramatic DNA with 1995’s “Apollo 13”, such is the air of authenticity and plausibility Ridley Scott has achieved. When a severe dust storm on the surface of Mars…

Craggus' Christmas Countdown Day 12: Love Actually (2003)
Richard Curtis’ “Love Actually” is often misunderstood as an ensemble romantic comedy, intertwining numerous criss-crossing plots in the run up to Christmas. It is, in fact, an avante garde adaptation of a grand British Christmas institution: “Love Actually” is the cinematic adaptation of a tin of Cadbury’s Roses (or Quality Street if you prefer, but does anyone really prefer Quality Street?)
Lik…
