Cornwall's Random Card of the Day #1061: Victimise

Victimise is an uncommon from Urza's Saga.

Wow, this is a reanimate spell! Two creatures for one card, and at only 3 mana! All you have to do is sacrifice a creature for that? Even ignoring the power of bringing out two 12-drops or something on turn 3, you'd think this would at least cost the going rate for reanimating ONE creature, since mathematically, it only nets you one. But it costs even less than that! Looks like this Urza's block card is totally broken, who'd have thunk?

Oh, wait, they enter tapped, that totally balances it.

Cornwall's Random Card of the Day #1060: Rimefeather Owl

When you've had too much RIIIIME.....

Rimefeather Owl is a rare from Coldsnap. This is another example where snow basics make things hella hard to balance. If you have a full contingent of snow lands, this is super good. If you don't it struggles to get up to a 4/4 without becoming a giant mana-sink. Sure, making your non-snow lands snow can help you get snow mana, but it's always just waay easier to chuck a bunch of snow basics in there and call it a day.

If/when will there be reprint sets with no regard for drafting? For instance, I would love reprint sets that only have scarce cards (because there's no need for commons and uncommons necessarily). What about a reprint set that only has rare and mythic lands?

Avatar

If. One of the biggest complaints about Aftermath is it was undraftable. That was us dipping our toe into undraftable sets and it went about as badly as it could go, so for the forseesable future, all our randomized booster releases will have a limited play component (which includes drafting as a big element).

They could have asked Maro about this and saved themselves the embarrassment. He has been quoted as saying "You can't fight human nature" and "If its in a booster pack, people will draft it". I imagine he's being this frank about the failure of undraftable boosters because he already told them so.

Cornwall's Random Card of the Day #1059: Overcome

Overcome is an uncommon from Hour of Devastation.

Look at this obvious not-Overrun. I'm not even upset: if it's this close, it comes off as homage. Overrun just got printed in the "we can totally accurately say these cards won't bite us in the ass for 5 years" Foundations set, but for a while it was dubious if it should ever be reprinted due to how damn swingy it can be. These effects are only ever good on attack, and only as a finishing blow with a decent board, but when they're good, MAN they are good! So I like to see em.

Cornwall's Random Card of the Day #1058: Incandescent Soulstoke

Incandescent Soulstoke is a rare from Lorwyn, seen here in its uncommon Modern Masters 2015 printing.

This was part of a cycle of rare creature lords, each buffing one of the iconic Lorwyn creature types. Elementals were mostly in red but also featured in all colours, so what's with this guy? Well, he assures you can buff your little elementals, the flamekin, exclusively in red, but also lets you power out your bigger elementals with Evoke in each colour without having to pay their mana cost. It also lets you get the etb effect of it for free. Pretty sneaky, sis!

Cornwall's Random Card of the Day #1057: Quiet Speculation

Quiet Speculation is an uncommon from Judgement.

Time to quietly speculate on the design of Quiet Speculation. This is a tutor, but only to your graveyard, and only of flashback cards. Well, you might think this is a very black effect(it is) but blue can tutor instants and sorceries, which are the only cards with flashback, so it's in blue's colour pie too. A weird effect, you get more cards than a usual tutor, but most of them will be at a worse rate than you'd expect for the effect. Oh, also you can increase your Threshold count by 3, if that helps.

Cornwall's Random Card of the Day #1056: Vivien, Arkbow Ranger

Vivien, Arkbow Ranger is a mythic rare from Magic 2020.

Ah, yes, Vivien, the planeswalker introduced very late into the Bolas Saga, who has a bow designed specifically to kill Nicol Bolas and a murderous grudge against Nicol Bolas. Who then never did a single thing of consequence.

This is some pretty generic green creature-centric planeswalkering. Pretty good idea for a core set. If you MUST have a planeswalker in there, make it nice and simple and strongly conveying their colour identity's main theme like this.

it would be cool if websites let you be an adult on them. the advertisers and payment processors need everything to be Family Friendly though and their definitions of family and friendly are absolutely fucked. but since they're in charge of the Internet now, no one is allowed to be an adult. tiktokers say things like "unalive" and "seggs" because they know death and sex are too adult for online. online is for idiot babies only now because they're easier to market to

oh im sorry you're a trans adult? super ban. you are super banned for life. you have upset Visa's feelings. Mastercard is throwing up in the corner. how could you do this to Google Ads?

What if zombies or other animate corpses just didnt even move like the living version whatsoever? I don't mean like they're all spooky jittery or scuttling, I mean like who's to say the reanimating force even cares which end is which or what legs are for? I'm saying what if zombies happened and it turns out they flop around like sea lions or even like stranded fish and it's faster than you'd think because they aren't held back by pain and the rot keeps lightening them. Eventually the limbs might wear away and drop off and they're acting like big wriggling maggots. Or they don't even understand how to move but they bury or hide themselves everywhere and wait to fold up all their limbs on you like a human corpse bear trap. Or I dunno, what if they roll everywhere? Tumbleweed style, hoop snake style, sideways like a hot dog, who knows. They're just sacks of putrid meat they don't need to imitate living behavior at all.

I headcannon them moving around like puppets. Obviously the musculature is not in play here, since skeletons are a thing. Most necromancers are humanoid, so the humanoid ones would move the least strangely. But the non humanoid ones...bears and cats and birds and such...they probably don't move very much like the real thing at all. And the extinct ones, like dinosaurs probably move quite oddly indeed, since likely whoever invented the spell didn't also dabble in paleontology.

how are limited draft archetypes for each set decided?

and why does izzet just about always get spells matter? other color combos seem to have two or three archetypes they cycle between (orzhov with lifegain/drain and reanimator, azorious with blink/etb and fliers, etc), and artifacts matter is sitting right there and yet has only been explored as a draft archetype for izzet a couple of times

Avatar

The design teams determine the draft archetypes as they figure out the structure of the set. Vision design usually does a first pass which is then updated by set design as the set details are finalized.

Each color combination has a default. Blue/red is “spells matter” as it is the color combination that has the highest as-fan of noncreature spells. We like at least one spell-centered archetype, so it’s blue/red unless another archetype has a reason to use it.

Avatar

I mean, in current set it's Rooms, which are enchantments, not something normally cared about by blue and especially not red. If there's a colour pair that struggles to break its own mold successfully, it's R/W.

Counterpoint: “taking a well crafted world and messing things up solely to mess them up” is Mirrodin to New Phyrexia (/jk)

Avatar

That wasn't "solely to mess it up". It was part of a decades long story re-introducing the Phrexians as a multiversal threat.

Mirrodin was built with the specific purpose of becoming New Phyrexia someday. It was its narrative destiny.

Cornwall's Random Card of the Day #1055: Death Pits of Rath

Death Pits of Rath is a rare from Tempest, seen here in its Eighth Edition printing.

Have you ever wanted to kill a creature but it just had TOO MUCH TOUGHNESS???? Do you get mad that your X/1s suck compared to everyone else's creatures but you refuse to play fewer for some reason? Then do I have the card for YOU!!! Death Pits of Rath kills high toughness creatures! It kills 7-toughness creatures! It kills 12-toughness creatures! It kills regenerator-well, no, it doesn't kill them. Or indestructible. Or creatures with protection from your creatures, or anything which prevents damage, like shield counters. And at 5 mana in black you could probably just put some pinpoint removal rather than waste a card on this symmetrical effect.

But it DOES do well in a few cases, like super-aggro decks which have trouble in the late game, or decks which love creatures of all stripes, including your own, going to the graveyard. There ARE uses for this card, you just kinda have to bend the entire deck around it being any good. Also, I kinda love the extra-pulpy name.

Achievement Unlocked:

Too Famous to Court Martial

Look, we'll look the other way on Tuvix, just please don't talk to the media.

I mean if they didn't put Jonathan "Yes I did do a genocide but the quite clearly insane man our ship has as its medical officer told me it was okay" Archer in space jail for his entire life, Janeway has nothing to worry about

You talking about Jonathan "Stole a stranger's warp drive and left them to die" Archer, the hero of the Federation?

But you see
