Another Thought About The Red Cup | Dawn

Though I'm currently residing on the west coast, my Baby-sitters Club friends on the east coast have made me well aware of a new trend regarding a red "holiday" cup at Starbucks.

If you didn’t think I’d have an opinion on the matter, you thought wrong.

I'm not concerned about what the cup represents to people. No, my greatest concern is about the cup itself. I've read that people are buying them in protest and then carelessly tossing them in the trash. Do you people not understand the environmental impact of throwing that cup into a landfill?

Though Starbucks has taken great strides in reducing waste made from their cups (read more here), it's up to the consumers themselves, who are currently enraged and probably not thinking clearly, to properly dispose of them. Just one cup can take over 20 years to decompose in a sealed landfill!

Please think of the bigger picture and start coming up with more creative ways to protest against Starbucks, if you must. Ditch the cup all together and start drinking from a BPA-free, reusable tumbler. You can even get a Christmas themed one if you want! This will be better on the environment, your health, and the sanity of Starbucks drinkers.
