What we talk about when we talk about Season One

Loyal Polices: we have some incredibly exciting news.  After a lot of careful discussion, the HartLife creative team has decided to re-write, re-record, and re-design Season One of Our Fair City as a single stand-alone episode.  After months of work, we are absolutely thrilled to share it with you.

We’ve decided to do this for a number of reasons.  Season One represents the very beginning of our learning process.  In the writers’ room, we’ve learned a lot about crafting a compelling story using audio alone.  In the studio, we’ve learned an incredible amount about what makes good sound; our first season was recorded in a closet (literally) with a popscreen made from pantyhose and a coat hanger.  And in our lives, we’ve all grown as people. In some cases, our past work tells a very different story (and reinforces different cultural narratives and norms) than we intended.  As the artistic and administrative team has diversified, in terms of gender, race, sexuality, gender expression, and more, we’ve all had the opportunity to re-examine what we were saying with our first season. We are proud of all the work we’ve done, but we felt the time was right to revisit this early work.

What you will hear is our best foot forward, driven by everything we’ve learned personally and professionally over the last five years. With Season One Revisited we have been able to communicate the original story of Neal Henderson, Elizabeth Rourke, Alison Dalton, and Nathan Rourke in a way that is truer to our intentions, approachable for new fans of the show, and exciting for our long-time listeners.  If you’ve always wanted an easy ambasador piece to get your friends listening to the show, this is it!

We are incredibly thankful to the actors, writers, visual artists, and others who worked on the original Season One.  It is important to us that their work be recognized, and that fans of the show can see where we started, and what we have grown into.  The original 14 episodes of Season One will remain on our website, freely available to stream or download as always.

Whether this is your first visit to the world of HartLife or you’ve been with us from the start, we hope you enjoy Season One of Our Fair City.  Thank you for your support, loyalty, and enthusiasm, and as always…

We’ll see you in the tunnels,

Jeffrey Gardner, Clayton Faits, and HartLife NFP

podcake

and we’re back by popular demand! it’s time to spread your podcast pallet!

With the staggering success of Welcome to Night Vale, it would seem that podcasts are truly becoming all the rage lately. Finally something that combines the thrills of television with the soothing nature of music.

All text, all voice, all in your imagination for a good story.

But perhaps you are too impatient to always wait the first and the fifteenth for another tune in to the whereabouts of this strange desert community or too broke to attend one of many live shows.

Looking for something fresh to please that sudden thirst for audio storytelling? Look no further as PodCake has six more podcasts you’ll certainly love.

1. Our Fair City

“Our Fair City is a campy, post-apocalyptic audio drama.”

Who doesn’t love camping? Who doesn’t love campy?

This is the dream podcast for theater nerds like myself. (Well, I’m an ex-theater nerd but I can still relate). Our Fair City is the first show I’ve listened to that really embodies that feel of watching a play.

The consistent narration, the set of short act after short act flowing into one another seamlessly and a setting and cast of characters that draw you into the…kind charitable nature of HartLife so perfectly.

This is the first I’ve heard of a dark dystopian scenario in a radio drama yet it doesn’t risk a bit of comedy and mystery to keep you tuned in.

I HART Our Fair City.

2. Radio Drama Revival

“Contemporary audio drama never sounded so good! Feast your ears on a good story on the weekly podcast, Radio Drama Revival. Featuring top-quality productions from around the glove by the best amateurs and professional producers on the glove.”

You wanna know what’s funny? This podcast is about podcasts and this blog is about podcasts and I’m talking about a podcast that talks about podcasts. You wanna know what else is funny?

The kind, talented fella who works on Our Fair City recommended this show to me. I’m surprised a paradox hasn’t developed from this sentence alone, but we’ll get those later (around number five to be precise).

But enough blabbering, Radio Drama Revival is what you would expect: a celebration of radio drama and reminding us of how damn good they are. You get a pleasant narration and music opening up to a number of new shows by the likes of talent all over the globe.

If you’re looking for variety or a new story to get your grimy ears on, look no further than Radio Drama Revival.

3. Wolf 359

“Life’s not easy for Doug Eiffel, the communications officer for the U.S.S Hephaestus Research Station, currently on Day 448 of its orbit around red dwarf star Wolf 359.”

Now most of you already know about how I feel about this show. I love it to all of its snarky, sparkly, star ridden pieces. Who doesn’t love a bit of comedy mixed with the existential terror of space and the hidden conflicts of mysterious alien life and shady organizations?

Wolf 359 hits the narrative fiction nail on the head with such accurate precision it seems effortless and tapping the subscribe button should be just as easy for you lucky listeners.

4. EOS 10

“EOS 10 is an original, sci-fi radio play that follows two mal-adjusted doctors and their staff on the Alliance space, station, EOS 10.”

Space! I love space! You know what I also like? Strange batches of misfits in space doing space related things like getting rid of boners and eating peas. This show is all about atmosphere right off the bat…also sass but let’s talk about other sounds right now.

Since I’m a big sound editing nerd, I can’t help but mention how calm and quiet the whole show is, no matter how obnoxious or dire the scenarios might become. It really immerses you into the setting and I…dig it. I dig it a lot.

This show will give you the comedy, drama, and cute bits of interpersonal quarrel we all want in our dysfunctional cast. I’m gonna cut this short before I start rambling. I might just be be a little bit too impressed to keep my cool.

5. HADRON GOSPEL HOUR

“The hapless duo of Hadron scientist Dr. Francis ‘Oppenheimer’ Valdini and his somewhat reluctant partner, the kidnapped IT guy Mike Wilkinson, are stranded outside of space time in the Hadron Bunker.”

This is the most recent podcast to my playlist and it’s the kind of thing that reminds me why I even got into this radio drama…stuff. Self referencing comedy, a charming cast, and a number of wacky scenarios. There’s a certain magic to this series that’s hard to put into words.

It’s not one for sanity or even remotely making sense half the time and that is a great deal of what makes it so damn entertaining. Entertaining, yeah, that’s the word I’m getting at.

Alongside ILLUSIONOID, it’s easily one of the funniest things I’ve come across in awhile and fans of the improv comedy are sure to enjoy this. It’s got that same zest of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (that’s a book if you didn’t know), just a little less British.

6. Reply All

“A show about the internet.”

This seems to be a trend now, huh? All the other shows fall into the radio drama formula and then there’s that one thats a bit of an outlier. Last time it was a pod fic and this time it’s a non fiction, review and interview show about technology.

Please don’t look away, this show just might save your life from trudging into unfortunate apps and websites filling the internet. It’ll make your cherish that privacy and power of the computer of phone you might be reading this on a bit more.

Educational is the best word I can use to describe this show. It make me think and that’s something we could all use more of.

now, get to listening.

The radio version of Neverwhere starred Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, and Natalie Dormer, and it looks like Good Omens includes a similar cast of well-known actors.
The lead character, Newton Pulsifer, will be played by Merlin’s Colin Morgan, who even looks the part, while Mark Heap (Stardust, The Green Wing) and Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians Of The Galaxy, Shaun Of The Dead) will be playing Aziraphale and Crowley. The rest of the cast is made up of British TV and movie actors including Sherlock’s Louise Brealey. The director is Dirk Miggs, who is best known for the iconic Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Oh man---Dirk Maggs is great, and his work on Neverwhere was tremendous.  I'm REALLY looking forward to this.
