Destin Daniel Cretton is doing whatever a spider can. The filmmaker behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in talks to sign on to direct Spider-Man 4. The move brings an end to speculation of who would spin the web for one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood. Cretton will bring fresh blood to this iteration of Spider-Man, which stars Tom Holland and is a co-production between two separate studios, Sony and Disney-owned Marvel Studios... Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are back on script duties, while Marvel head Kevin Feige and former Sony head Amy Pascal are producing. Sources say that Spider-Man 4 is running, not crawling, full steam ahead and will shoot early next year.

Destin Daniel Cretton has decided to step away as director of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Kang Dynasty to focus on his other Marvel projects.  Cretton is currently busy on the Marvel Studios/Disney+ series Wonder Man, which he co-created with Andrew Guest, who serves as showrunner. Cretton EPs the series and also directed the first two episodes. The series resumes shooting after Thanksgiving. The filmmaker is also currently working on the sequel to the $432M-plus global grossing hit he directed, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. That movie is the highest grossing AAPI superhero movie ever and also owns the record opening over the 4-day Labor Day holiday weekend with $94.6M stateside.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton has entered into an exclusive multi-year overall deal with Disney companies Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective. The filmmaker is already in development with Marvel Studios on a new MCU series for Disney+. At the same time, Disney has made it official that Cretton is returning to write and direct the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

“Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective. I can’t wait to explore new stories and build new worlds with this community,” said Cretton.

“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started,” said Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios and Chief Creative Officer, Marvel.
