Pomegranates in Tunisia
Native to the area of modern day Iran & Iraq, pomegranates have been cultivated since ancient times. They first spread to the Caucasus and the Himalayas in Northern India and today are widely cultivated throughout Turkey, Iran, Syria, Spain, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, China, Burma, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Jordan, the Philippines, the Mediterranean, and tropical Africa. Introduced into Latin America and California by Spanish settlers in 1769, pom is also cultivated in parts of California and Arizona.
Morocco
Couscous (Berber: Seksu) is a Berber dish of semolina, traditionally served with a meat or vegetable stew spooned over it. It's a staple food in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya. Couscous was elected as the 3rd-favorite dish in France in 2011. It's also popular in the West African Sahel, Spain/Canary Islands, Portugal, Madeira, Italy (particularly in Sicily's Province of Trapani), as well as Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Malta, Cyprus, parts of the Middle East, and India.
This makes me laugh and smile every time I hear it because it reminds me of people I know and of the fact that only a few nationalities in the world are actually able to make these chhhhh sounds that appear in Dutch as well as in Arabic and German. LOL
Je ne suis pas maghrébine, maar ik hou van ze. Liiiiebe sie einfach. :)
They've always meant a lot to me. I've been drawn to them since I first saw one, like some strange, vague memory from another place and time. They're beautiful and I like the meaning. It isn't just some superstition to me but an integral part of culture and ancient symbol that goes back to different ancient civilizations. The next time I visit a country where they are made I will probably go crazy selecting just the right ones. :)
