~ Family Picture.
Culture: Roman
Period: Late imperial
Date: mid A.D. 3rd century
Medium: Sardonyx, layered horizontally. In a modern, enamelled gold setting as a pendant with an eyelet and ring at the top, small eyelet at the bottom.
▪︎ From the source: The portrait busts show the image of a probably Christian family: the clothed busts of the spouses are placed opposite each other, on the left the bearded man, on the right the woman with a braided hairdo. The little daughter's bust between her parents. The Greek inscription running around the top gives the names of the sitters. It reads in translation: "Good luck, Pancharis, with your mistress Basilissa and with Paulina". Between and below the busts: "Life (is) the one God".
