I just want to hear some happy stories about your accomplishments :)
probably Kabuki’s first vet appointment! hearing that i knew what i was doing was super reassuring when i was first starting. getting the beans to eat the first time is always a highlight!
Shortly after I rescued Puddin’ she was still recovering from mites and was having really bad sheds. One of her eye caps got stuck, so I had to try to help her. I’d had her maaaybe a month and so I was really worried about stressing her out because it was ON there and I was going to have to do a lot of work. She was so good and so trusting, and it took twenty minutes, but I got the cap off.
Now, nearly a year and some change later, she has perfect unassisted sheds and the cracks in her eyes have gone completely. Every time I take her to the vet he has to call one of his students in to look at how iridescent and healthy she is.
My perfect, chubby baby.
then the last of alphie!
I’m,, he almost made me cry today, guys. he’s been super defensive since he got home, and he strikes like every time I go to anything. him eating made me feel so so much better but… nothing like today. I held him in my hands more than I was able to capture, mostly because the camera and quick movements still frighten him, so I decided not to press. he relaxed, very gradually, and began to move about my lap and the blankets around me for a little bit. he didn’t much appreciate being moved when he got too nosy in places he didn’t belong, but, didn’t posture at me very much. So I decided to test him. I placed him on the other end of the bed from where I was sitting, more or less a foot from me, since he’s so small. and I wanted to see what he would do. very slowly, with extreme caution, he began to make his way back. to me. he approached me warily, neck slightly tensed, tongue flicking, until he reached my leg and climbed back up into my lap. he very gently came and sniffed my hands, and resettled by me. and I was damn near in tears. it’s such a little thing. I was warm and the closest thing to familiar on my bed. but he still came back. he’s going to be a process, still, no denying it. but we’re learning. Together.
Reminds me of how things used to be with Jaffa. Now my little boy will settle up near my face and let me kiss him on the cheek. Biscuit and Puddin where both socialized before I adopted them, but I had to get Jaffa to trust me. One of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
I'm so happy for you and your noodle son.
any advise on how to deal with ball pythons when they are defensive/aggressive? I keep seeing videos and breeders saying to not give them space and "call their bluff" and forcing them to calm down by folding them into a submissive ball, and that sorta sounds wrong to me?? When a bp doesn't want to be handled, do you leave them or take them out anyways?
I am kind of the in between? I don’t 100% leave them alone, but I don’t force them to go into their defensive ‘ball’ mode. If they strike in cage, I gently take them out and let them sit out of cage for maybe a minute or so, usually on my lap. Then I will put them back in if they don’t strike again. After a couple times doing this, they stop seeing you as a threat. Making them ball up will make them associate you with stress, which honestly might make their defensiveness worse. Its always a slow and steady progress, especially with hatchlings :)
same! I handle gently, and immediately, when they strike because I don’t want them to think striking will get them the result they want. Jaffa was very bitey for the first month, but now when he wants me to leave him alone he just retreats a little, and I listen to that body language to reinforce it.
Puddin… what are you doing?
people who are afraid of snakes are fuckin’ WILD, like dude, just carefully step over these fat babies’ sausage bodies and gently move the burmese python chillin’ against the door, then you become unfathomably rich. i would do this for $10. i would do this for FREE.
I would pay $10 to do this
…I would have trouble making it to the door before figuring out how to take the snakes with me….
I would have to sit and pat each of them gently on the side and tell them they were good snakes, so that they knew they were good snakes. It would take me a while to get to the door.
Jaffa can’t decide which hide.
When human hooks you up with the good shit 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👀👀👀💯💯💯🙌🏻
I want a dead eyed footie pajama demon so badly ;_;
Are you a “this is my perfect sweetest boy, he has so much sweetness in all the scales on his kind little head he makes sugar seem sour” kind of snake owner or a “this is the asshole rope who lives in my home and watches me in the night. I would die for her” snake owner
Possible third option: “this is my Absolute Dumb Ass child who knocks his water over for fun and never learned elementary school math”
I have three snakes, and I am each of these depending on which snake you ask me about.
Why are reptiles offended when you change their water or clean their poops?
Intrusion into territory, removing the smell that might help keep away predators, a sudden change in the environment that they don’t know is for their own good, all kinds of reasons!
Alternatively: they’re proud of their artwork and offended that you don’t think it’s equally beautiful.
Bikky and Jaffa get offended, but Puddin’ has actually come to the front of her tub and crawled into my hands to get away from a dirty tub.
Puddin’ is the weirdest damn snake sometimes.
We were getting the kids food at the store today, and mom saw a baby corn snake, and nearly had to be dragged away. I think maybe she’ll get a corn snoot instead of a ball python when the time comes.
Does handling your snakes have anything to do with why they would be hissing? I have ball pythons and there's one who suddenly didn't seem very happy (his hot spot is 89F and his cool side is ~80F) he had eaten about 3-4 days before, was out of his hide. I went to pick him up and he just kinda huffed at me. That's all I can describe it. Does he hate me?
Huffing is super normal! Kabuki likes to grumble at me picking him up too, but once he’s out, he’s usually fine. If you continue to notice them remaining tense, defensive, or stressed, then don’t push him!
Based on context and body language I’ve determined that Bikky has an “I’m scared” huff, an “I’m annoyed” huff, and an “I am aware you are touching me” huff. I’ve never heard her hiss, because when it’s the “I’m scared” or “I’m annoyed” huff I back off. There’s one other huff that is a subset of the “I’m annoyed” huff, when she encounters a wrinkle in the blanket that won’t let her burrow further. I call it her “god damn it” huff.
Puddin’ has never huffed, and I can’t remember Jaffa huffing either. Biscuit is definitely the most vocal.
Her favorite place to sleep and peep when she's out and about.
a beautiful girl, coming in for a visit!!
okay but like…how are you not terrified of her biting you in the face
ball pythons are very docile, and she’s not defensively posturing at all! a defensive snake will coil it’s neck in a tight S, as to flex the muscles to best effectively “punch” out to surprise their prey, as they are ambush predators. Clementine here is completely at ease, as you can tell by her relaxed and elongated neck! Plus, when I filmed this video, I was squatting over her. My face was very far from her reach, and even if it was within it, the most aggressive thing she’s ever done is come up to sniff at me, much like a friendly dog. ^^
I got tagged in the face once--I was examining Jaffa, trying to see if all his shed came off, back before he knew me well enough to know I wasn’t going to eat him, and I got too close. He snapped at my lip and got me. It pinched, I bled, and... I still hold him up close to my face to rub my nose on his side when I’m overwhelmed with love. He will sniff my hair or my cheek, and is totally cool now that he knows me.
I like holding Biscuit when she’s a puddle snake, and putting my face right in the center. She doesn’t seem to mind (my face is usually warm).
Puddin’ likes to sit on my shoulder and get at eye level with me, just looks at me for a while, then tries to use my nose to climb on top of my head. I have kissed her directly on the nose once--she was right there, just being perfect. I couldn’t help myself. She didn’t even back up, not scared even a little, she just stuck her tongue up my nose.
So, as someone who got bit in the face by a snake once, lemme tell you--that really didn’t put me off from letting them get in my face (when they’re relaxed, of course. Not trying that shit on food night)
Wicked witch of the Sneast, pictured without her Ruby slipper.
Ok you are the first person I've known who likes their steak rare, so I just have to ask...why?
I actually like it blue, which is “seared on the outside and basically completely raw in the middle,” but for some reason many restaurants won’t serve that. I have no idea why I like it so raw, I just do! There’s something about the taste and the textural contrast- and the temperature contrast, too- that makes it just so dang tasty to me!
I like my steak blue too.
It’s the difference between cooked fish and sushi--I like both, but I definitely prefer sushi. It’s... sweeter? Softer. There is more flavor.
