Fake News Check: Is Zelenskyy really standing in front of a Kharkiv sign with the Russian colours, recording a video?
Pro-Russian accounts are currently spreading a certain screenshot (sometimes also the video).
It, allegedly, shows Zelenskyy standing in front of a city sign of Kharkiv, painted in Russian colours. In the video, which is only some seconds long, Zelenskyy greets Ukrainians and announces that he's in Kharkiv. The pro-Russian accounts claim that this is Zelenskyy's "goodbye" visit to the city because Russia is soon going to "liberate" it.
So, is Zelenskyy really standing in front of the sign? Is the video real?
Short answer: No. The image was altered, and the video is fake.
Here are the facts:
True is - Zelenskyy did visit Kharkiv on May 16, as well as on other dates in the past. But he never recorded a video address in front of a Kharkiv sign. Instead, the online videos published are from meetings with the military, a visit to a hospital, and his daily video address - back in Kyiv, in his office.
In addition, you can clearly hear that the audio in the pro-Russian video has been altered and cut to fit.
But what about the background and the Zelenskyy in the video / screenshot?
Well, it's fake. Which is, if you zoom in, also visible.
They took another Zelenskyy video and used a fake background to let it look like he's standing in front of the sign.
The video, from which they took Zelenskyy, is one he recorded back in December 2023 while visiting Avdiivka.
(Screenshot from the original video and screenshot from the fake video. You can see that everything matches - hair and beard length and styling, the same clothes, same filming angle, that one cord of the jacket being pulled out, jacket is identical open, ... .)
And this is the original background, a photo taken from the internet (another source).
