oh my god? the x files-fandom was the fandom that invented the word ‘shipping’? JESUS CHRIST I LOVE Y’ALL
Yes, back in the early days, there were two camps of fans: “Relationshippers” (people all about the MSR) and the “NoRomos” (people all about the platonic partnership.) Relationshippers was eventually shortened to “shippers.”
The X-Files popularity just happened to parallel the birth of the internet. Philes took it by storm with the creation of fan forums, chat groups, and hundreds of websites devoted to the show, characters, and the actors. :)
The X-Files fandom also coined the term UST (Unresolved Sexual Tension) as a fanfic descriptor. :D Fandom history is pretty neat.
fruck man
MSR and Mulder/Krycek are literally what corrupted me into the world of fanfic. We had these weird forum things we accessed through AOL where people uploaded text files of their fanfic. And if it was a multi parter in progress, good fucking luck finding the other pieces. We would save fics we liked in word documents because you couldn't trust them not to disappear after so many weeks (which, again, was a nightmare with multiparters). It was practically a blessing when web 2.0 began and people moved to places like geocities and livejournal.
The other groundbreaking fandom (slightly before my time) was Star Trek. The Kirk/Spock shippers were the ones to start up zines and email lists to spread fanfic and fanart in the very early days of web 1.0 and before that.
“A lizard person getting lycanthropy would be no big deal” is totally humanocentric – it’s presuming that the lizard person already thinks of themselves as a freaky mutant animal, so turning into a different sort of freaky mutant animal isn’t a huge adjustment. I mean, if anything, a human getting lycanthropy should be less of a big deal – at least you’re still a mammal. The lizard just got booted over to a whole different taxonomic class!
Okay but there’s literally an X-Files episode about a lizard that gets bitten by a human and is cursed to periodically turn into a white dude working a shitty retail job at, like a cell phone store and he thinks it’s a VERY BIG DEAL and is not at all okay with it.
what a nice prom photo
