My dad travels a lot. This is an old waterwheel he came across.
THIS is swamp culture
Omfg I grew up in a bog and we did this
The alligator’s snout parted the swamp scum and her tail, lazily swishing, propelled her along. The air was thick with murk and the sounds of a banjo as the swamp witch, laying atop Gatorbetty, softly strummed “That Gator Ain’t Just My Raft She Is My Best Friend.”
Lysichiton americanus, Western Skunk Cabbage. Araceae family. Aptly named… by Ed Via Flickr: it stinks! Skunk cabbage Lysichiton americanus 114/365
My goblin siblings and I were exploring our local bog once and ate a nibble of a leaf from one of these. We'd read they were edible, but hadn't read that you have to boil them in several changes of water for them to be safe for consumption, so it felt like eating fiberglass. Always research your forage food before shoving it into your hungry little mouths, folks!
