Title: It’s the Thought That Counts

Word count: 887

“I thought...well,” Sakura said as Sai turned his gift over in his pale hands, “it seemed like you’d used up all the pages of your old one.”

“Thank you,” Sai said softly, looking up to meet her gaze as he placed his hand over the smooth cover of his new notebook. “I’m pleasantly surprised.”

Sakura beamed. “I’m so glad you like it!”

“You actually chose well.”

“Wait.” Sakura’s face fell before her eyes narrowed. “Are you suggesting I wouldn’t know what to buy?”

“Sai!” Naruto growled, loudly balling wrapping paper into a ball before sending it zooming between Sai and Sakura. “What the hell is this supposed to be?”

Sai gave him an eye-crinkling smile. “You like it?”

“Uh, Sai…” Yamato said, looking over Naruto’s shoulder and exchanging a glance with Kakashi. “I don’t think…”

“I’m a dick?” Naruto said between clenched teeth, holding up the t-shirt echoing the words he’d just spoken.

Sai’s smile remained. “To make up for the dickless thing. I thought you’d appreciate that.”

“Well, you thought wrong!”

“Sasuke!” Kakashi called, his voice sharp and concise as his hand flew in front of Naruto’s chest to bar him from lunging at his teammate. “Who’s your recipient?”

Sasuke stepped forward presenting a gift, giving Naruto an eye roll. “Sakura. Here.”

Sakura accepted the gift, blushing as her fingers met Sasuke’s and the smooth foiled paper. “Thank you, Sasuke.”

“You haven’t even opened it yet,” Sasuke huffed.

Sakura turned her smile to her gift as she traced the edge of paper with her fingers and tore into it. She opened the cardboard box and gasped. Her green eyes lit as she met the curious eyes of her team. Sasuke looked away as his cheeks went pink.

“It’s perfect,” Sakura said, pulling out a shiny new kunai carved with an engraving. “Thank you.”

“You need to protect yourself better,” Sasuke explained.

Kakashi snorted, giving Sasuke a fond smile. “That’s actually a pretty sentimental gift coming from you, Sasuke.”

“It’s not, actually. It’s practical.”

“No?” Kakashi said, his visible eye sparkling devilishly. “Care to share with us what’s engraved on it, Sakura?”

“Kakashi!” Sasuke snapped, sending him a glare. “Why don’t you just give your gift and move on with this?”

“Okay,” Kakashi drawled. “Well speaking of a sentimental gift…”

Sasuke’s eyes went wide as Kakashi moved toward him. “What…?”

Kakashi moved with the speed of an attack to envelop Sasuke in his arms. Sasuke made a choked sound as Kakashi held him close, almost suffocatingly. When Kakashi pulled away, Sasuke shook and glared at him.

“What was that?” he snapped.

“Your gift,” Kakashi said flatly.

“Ew, Kakashi-Sensei!” Naruto cried, grimacing at the two of them. “You like Sasuke?”

“Uh, no, that’s–” Kakashi raised his hands.

“Actually very sweet,” Yamato said with a nervous chuckle, looking between the two distraught young teammates. “I imagine not too many people are brave enough to give you a hug, Sasuke.”

“Right,” Kakashi said, sighing his relief as Naruto calmed down. “It was a better gift for you than any material item.”

“You’re ridiculous,” Sasuke said, looking away before a small smile pulled at his lips.

“All right,” Sakura said, caressing the engraved handle of her kunai, “who’s left?”

“Um, me, ya know!” Naruto bounced forward, offering a sloppily-wrapped gift to Yamato. “Merry Christmas, Captain Yamato!”

“Thank you, Naruto,” Yamato said, smiling fondly at the box falling into his arms.

He unwrapped the package easily, the paper falling away to reveal the smooth curve of wood. A cylindrical, smooth curve of wood.

“Huh,” Yamato said.

Kakashi gave Naruto a tired look. “You’re giving Yamato a block of wood?”

“Yeah!” Naruto cried, outraged by the disbelieving looks from his teammates. “He likes it, ya know! He can build anything from it!”

Sakura smacked his head with a growl. “You dummy!”

“It’s - it’s okay, Sakura.” Yamato gave Naruto a smile. “Thank you. That was very thoughtful of you, Naruto.”

“And stupid,” Sai added.

“Don't you ever know when to shut your mouth?” Sasuke grumbled at Sai.

“Okay, my turn!” Yamato said, reaching back for the present set behind him. “Kakashi-Senpai.”

Kakashi accepted the small package with a curious hum. “I wonder what this is.”

Yamato scratched his flushing cheek. “It’s...just a little something. You’re not an easy person to buy for.”

Kakashi’s brows rose as he peeled back the paper, leaving his subordinates curiously waiting.

“Well?” Sasuke said.

“A new mask,” Kakashi said, sending Yamato a close-eyed smile as he showed the dark material to the others. “Thank you, Tenzo. It’s just what I needed.”

“Another mask?” Naruto cried.

Yamato shrugged. “I know you like to layer them sometimes.”

“We’ll never see his face,” Sakura said miserably.

“Are we done now?” Sasuke said, crossing his arms. “Tell me we don’t have to do this again next year.”

“If we do, Sai is not allowed to have me!” Naruto shouted, shaking his fist at his continuously smiling teammate.

“Well…” Kakashi said, exchanging a glance with Yamato, “I guess that depends how good you all are until next Christmas.”

The threat lingering beneath Kakashi’s smiling eye doesn’t go unnoticed by his team. As Yamato smiles at the subordinates, they groan wearily and collect their presents before dispersing to share the holiday and their new gifts with the rest of their friends and family.

Last one... for now. Can I request Kakashi/Yamato and 6. Gently brushing snow from the other’s hat/hair/face? Can it include a first kiss in the falling snow? 🥺💚✨

Title: Falling

Word count: 503

“You know,” Kakashi said, his voice a hushed whisper as his eyes traveled up and down Yamato’s face, “Sai should be back soon.”

Yamato gulped when Kakashi raised his gloved hand, bare fingertips extending toward his face. “Yes?”

Yamato had his back pressed against the frigid brick wall outside the inn, snowflakes drifting from the sky all around him in this hushed atmosphere of the alleyway, and the most amazing man he knew right beside him. He didn’t want this moment to end, but Kakashi was right. Sai would be back as soon as he finished settling Naruto into bed after that fainting episode. It wouldn’t take Sai long, not when they had to hurry after Sakura. Yamato didn’t know what Kakashi intended by bringing his hand so close to Yamato’s eyes, but Yamato tried not to flinch. He gritted his teeth and clenched his eyes shut as Kakashi’s hand came down. This was the hand of a man Yamato trusted with his life. He could trust him touching his face.

Instead of anything harsh or jarring, there was a gentle touch. At the first sign of Kakashi’s warmth, Yamato opened his eyes to see white specks of snow falling from his head like a sprinkle of powder. Kakashi’s hand brushed down the side of Yamato’s face, smoothing his hair back behind his ear gingerly enough that Yamato never felt the chill of the cold snow that had landed there.

“I’d hate to waste this chance,” Kakashi said, giving an eye crinkling smile behind his mask. “With the way things are going, there might not be another one.”

“Chance?” Yamato gasped, his eyes going wide when Kakashi peeled back his mask. “Chance for what...Senpai?”

As Kakashi leaned forward, encroaching Yamato with his warmth as his soft lips wrapped around Yamato’s, Yamato’s heart pounded in his chest. He stopped breathing, he was pretty sure. The only thing he could be sure of was that his Senpai was finally finally returning his affections.

When Kakashi pulled back and raised his mask, Yamato licked his lips to find them slick, no longer chapped from the cold. “Wh-wha-why?”

“Don’t tell me you didn’t want that,” Kakashi said, his confidence wavering as his one dark eye held Yamato’s gaze.

Yamato smiled and reached for Kakashi’s hand, lacing their numbing fingers together. “I did. I just never knew you did.”

“Good,” Kakashi sighed. “I guess it’s time to go.”

As he rose to his feet, Yamato heard the telltale thump of Sai’s weight landing in the snow down at the end of the alley. Reluctantly, Yamato followed Kakashi to his feet and trailed after his captain.

“If I come back from meeting Sasuke alive,” Kakashi said over his shoulder, his voice barely audible over the crunching snow. “Do you want to…”

“Definitely,” Yamato said as his heart thudded frantically in his chest again. “And I know you’re coming back.”

“With this kind of motivation,” Kakashi drawled as Sai waved Kakashi forward, “I guess I’ll have to.”

Title: It’s for the Mission

Word count: 633

“Move!” Kakashi huffed, shoving Obito off of him. “You’re distracting me! I’m trying to watch.”

“I’m trying to get warm! I’m freezing,” Obito said with a glare, illustrating his point with chattering teeth and tightly crossed arms beneath his cloak. “Whoever decided open-toed shoes had to be part of our uniform, even on missions to the Land of Iron, they weren’t thinking.”

“Or they were sadists,” Kakashi grumbled.

He couldn’t deny that Obito had a point. Kakashi’s fingers and toes were completely numb after crouching for hours in this secluded cave they found along this path which their intel had claimed enemy nin would be using. The enemy was running late. Kakashi was not happy, especially being cooped up with a chunin teammate barely capable of watching his back, who apparently was also incapable of functioning in harsh climates without smothering Kakashi to steal his body heat.

A chill crawled up Kakashi’s spine, but he refused to let Obito see him shiver. It was much warmer having Obito pressed up against him. Maybe Obito had the right idea...sometimes. Kakashi supposed, as long as it was relevant to the mission, it could be justified.

Kakashi worked his jaw while peering out at the vacant path. “Are you going to be able to move when it’s time? Or are you freezing solid?”

“I’m an ice cube,” Obito deadpanned, pressing his warmth at Kakashi’s side once again. “Come on. What kind of captain lets his teammate freeze to death mid-mission?”

Kakashi pressed his lips together, relieved Obito couldn’t see his cheeks flushing beneath his mask. Obito’s shoulder was so warm against his. The hot air of his breath fluttered the hairs at the back of Kakashi’s neck. As Obito rubbed shoulder to shoulder, shivering violently against Kakashi’s cloaked shoulder, Kakashi inhaled deeply, steeling himself to remain serious and focused here.

“Don’t be a crybaby,” Kakashi scoffed. “You’re not going to die from this.”

Obito began to slide away, but Kakashi sank his weight into Obito’s shoulder before he could. Obito grunted his surprise, but pressed back against Kakashi. This time, Kakashi let him. Already, that chill running up and down his spine was subsiding.

“Th-th-thanks,” Obito said with another hot breath in Kakashi’s ear.

Kakashi shivered. “Y-yeah. Whatever. I’m just doing what’s b-b-best for the mission. Minato-Sensei and Rin are waiting up ahead. If we fail to take these guys out f-from the back end, they could be–”

“In trouble, I know,” Obito said with a shudder. “I wouldn’t let that happen, no matter how c-cold I am.”

“Good.”

Kakashi closed his eyes, gathering himself again. Something felt really nice about having Obito this close to him, and it wasn’t just the subsiding cold. He didn’t understand what he was feeling here, but he needed to concentrate. He needed to keep an eye out for the enemy. He opened his eyes again, exhaling his relief when he spied movement.

“Hey, K-Kakashi?”

“There.” Kakashi cut Obito off, rising to his feet with Obito moving as if chained to him when he pointed to the enemy approach. “Time to get moving.”

He glanced sideways at his teammate with a small smile Obito likely couldn’t see behind his mask. He didn’t know what Obito had been about to say, but he didn’t want to give him the chance now. If Obito was thinking anything like what Kakashi was a moment ago, this wasn’t the time. They could question what cuddling together had awakened later, when they returned to the Leaf from this mission.

Obito narrowed his eyes and gave a curt nod. “Right. Ready?”

“Of course I am,” Kakashi scoffed.

He flexed his wrists, narrowed his eyes, and focused in on the backs of the cluster of ninja who would never see this half of Team Minato coming.
