Title: It’s the Thought That Counts
Word count: 887
“I thought...well,” Sakura said as Sai turned his gift over in his pale hands, “it seemed like you’d used up all the pages of your old one.”
“Thank you,” Sai said softly, looking up to meet her gaze as he placed his hand over the smooth cover of his new notebook. “I’m pleasantly surprised.”
Sakura beamed. “I’m so glad you like it!”
“You actually chose well.”
“Wait.” Sakura’s face fell before her eyes narrowed. “Are you suggesting I wouldn’t know what to buy?”
“Sai!” Naruto growled, loudly balling wrapping paper into a ball before sending it zooming between Sai and Sakura. “What the hell is this supposed to be?”
Sai gave him an eye-crinkling smile. “You like it?”
“Uh, Sai…” Yamato said, looking over Naruto’s shoulder and exchanging a glance with Kakashi. “I don’t think…”
“I’m a dick?” Naruto said between clenched teeth, holding up the t-shirt echoing the words he’d just spoken.
Sai’s smile remained. “To make up for the dickless thing. I thought you’d appreciate that.”
“Well, you thought wrong!”
“Sasuke!” Kakashi called, his voice sharp and concise as his hand flew in front of Naruto’s chest to bar him from lunging at his teammate. “Who’s your recipient?”
Sasuke stepped forward presenting a gift, giving Naruto an eye roll. “Sakura. Here.”
Sakura accepted the gift, blushing as her fingers met Sasuke’s and the smooth foiled paper. “Thank you, Sasuke.”
“You haven’t even opened it yet,” Sasuke huffed.
Sakura turned her smile to her gift as she traced the edge of paper with her fingers and tore into it. She opened the cardboard box and gasped. Her green eyes lit as she met the curious eyes of her team. Sasuke looked away as his cheeks went pink.
“It’s perfect,” Sakura said, pulling out a shiny new kunai carved with an engraving. “Thank you.”
“You need to protect yourself better,” Sasuke explained.
Kakashi snorted, giving Sasuke a fond smile. “That’s actually a pretty sentimental gift coming from you, Sasuke.”
“It’s not, actually. It’s practical.”
“No?” Kakashi said, his visible eye sparkling devilishly. “Care to share with us what’s engraved on it, Sakura?”
“Kakashi!” Sasuke snapped, sending him a glare. “Why don’t you just give your gift and move on with this?”
“Okay,” Kakashi drawled. “Well speaking of a sentimental gift…”
Sasuke’s eyes went wide as Kakashi moved toward him. “What…?”
Kakashi moved with the speed of an attack to envelop Sasuke in his arms. Sasuke made a choked sound as Kakashi held him close, almost suffocatingly. When Kakashi pulled away, Sasuke shook and glared at him.
“What was that?” he snapped.
“Your gift,” Kakashi said flatly.
“Ew, Kakashi-Sensei!” Naruto cried, grimacing at the two of them. “You like Sasuke?”
“Uh, no, that’s–” Kakashi raised his hands.
“Actually very sweet,” Yamato said with a nervous chuckle, looking between the two distraught young teammates. “I imagine not too many people are brave enough to give you a hug, Sasuke.”
“Right,” Kakashi said, sighing his relief as Naruto calmed down. “It was a better gift for you than any material item.”
“You’re ridiculous,” Sasuke said, looking away before a small smile pulled at his lips.
“All right,” Sakura said, caressing the engraved handle of her kunai, “who’s left?”
“Um, me, ya know!” Naruto bounced forward, offering a sloppily-wrapped gift to Yamato. “Merry Christmas, Captain Yamato!”
“Thank you, Naruto,” Yamato said, smiling fondly at the box falling into his arms.
He unwrapped the package easily, the paper falling away to reveal the smooth curve of wood. A cylindrical, smooth curve of wood.
“Huh,” Yamato said.
Kakashi gave Naruto a tired look. “You’re giving Yamato a block of wood?”
“Yeah!” Naruto cried, outraged by the disbelieving looks from his teammates. “He likes it, ya know! He can build anything from it!”
Sakura smacked his head with a growl. “You dummy!”
“It’s - it’s okay, Sakura.” Yamato gave Naruto a smile. “Thank you. That was very thoughtful of you, Naruto.”
“And stupid,” Sai added.
“Don't you ever know when to shut your mouth?” Sasuke grumbled at Sai.
“Okay, my turn!” Yamato said, reaching back for the present set behind him. “Kakashi-Senpai.”
Kakashi accepted the small package with a curious hum. “I wonder what this is.”
Yamato scratched his flushing cheek. “It’s...just a little something. You’re not an easy person to buy for.”
Kakashi’s brows rose as he peeled back the paper, leaving his subordinates curiously waiting.
“Well?” Sasuke said.
“A new mask,” Kakashi said, sending Yamato a close-eyed smile as he showed the dark material to the others. “Thank you, Tenzo. It’s just what I needed.”
“Another mask?” Naruto cried.
Yamato shrugged. “I know you like to layer them sometimes.”
“We’ll never see his face,” Sakura said miserably.
“Are we done now?” Sasuke said, crossing his arms. “Tell me we don’t have to do this again next year.”
“If we do, Sai is not allowed to have me!” Naruto shouted, shaking his fist at his continuously smiling teammate.
“Well…” Kakashi said, exchanging a glance with Yamato, “I guess that depends how good you all are until next Christmas.”
The threat lingering beneath Kakashi’s smiling eye doesn’t go unnoticed by his team. As Yamato smiles at the subordinates, they groan wearily and collect their presents before dispersing to share the holiday and their new gifts with the rest of their friends and family.
