The Drifter

“There is nothing more dangerous than a lone, wandering samurai. I wish you hadn’t left his swords beside him.”

“Because a lone, wandering samurai who’s had his swords confiscated is more dangerous. Besides, he won’t be able to wield them properly with those injuries.”

“The scar across his eye proves that he’d seen worse.”

“Now he has scarred hands to match.”

Kakashi blinked his eyes open and checked to confirm that his swords were within reach. He winced at the effort it took to stretch his wounded hand to touch them, and then exhaled relief after his finger found the familiar hilt of each. He relaxed, and continued to eavesdrop on the conversation that woke him as it resumed outside his door.

“Where do you think he comes from? I don’t recognize his clan symbol.”

“Who knows? Perhaps even he has forgotten his origins. Most of them are raised in other households, treated like guests instead of the prisoners they actually are—”

“Shh! Don’t speak that way! You never know who might be listening.”

Kakashi closed his eyes again and willed away that which he hadn’t forgotten before it clouded his vision. There was nothing more jarring than overhearing a succinct and accurate summary of some samurais’ childhoods, including his own.

Loyalty was a requirement of every person of any standing in their world. The only difference was to whom they were loyal. It was easier to be loyal when one learned the cost of failing at it. Kakashi’s father sacrificed his whole self to cover it and it still wasn’t enough. His son paid the remainder of the price as a ward in a home with a family that wasn’t his.

Until he didn’t anymore.

The changing times and Kakashi joined forces, but who led and who followed, he couldn’t say. One day, the wind blew differently, which made him think differently, and he was unwilling to stay where things refused to change.

Of course, that made him a criminal, but it also meant that he was free to wear his clan symbol again, so long as he was careful to roam where no one recognized it.

“I’m glad the master brought him here before the Shinsengumi found him.”

“You think he’s part of the Bakufu resistance?”

The changing times proved to be the stronger element of their partnership if housemaids were gossiping about the state of things while Kakashi laid in a bed recovering.

“Until he wakes up, there’s no way of knowing.”

“The poor man, left there without any comrades to tend to him.”

Kakashi reopened his eyes. He may not have had comrades, but he did have enemies. Whether he was fit to travel on his own or not no longer mattered to him. The best way he could show his gratitude for the kindness of strangers was to leave them.

He waited until the maids returned to their work before he attempted to sit up. He was greeted with a meal that had been left for him, and he calculated how many days he could make it last on the road.

Kakashi gathered the remainder of the roll of bandages his unknown hosts used to bind his injured hands, and wound them around his face. It was a quicker disguise than waiting for a beard to grow. Though he hid his face, he didn’t hesitate to thread his arms through the garment that bore his name.

He was long gone through the window before the housemaids learned of his departure, finding a few neatly-written lines on a piece of paper in Kakashi’s place on the bed.

I hasten away

Until spring of your freedom

And kindness repaid
