TL;DR: The Texas government is trying to trick you into thinking you've registered to vote online when that's not possible.

This has not been circulated widely enough.

If you know someone in TX, pleeeeease make sure they see this.

What's so worrying about this is that it's specifically targeted at younger people.

"I'm not handing someone a piece of paper.... wtf"
"Mail? As in... put a stamp on it? Where tf would I get a stamp??"
"FAX???? You have got to be joking rn."

Younger people statistically vote more liberal than conservative. By tricking younger and "more online than not" people into using a fake registration service, the state of TX makes sure that fewer liberal votes are counted.

SPREAD THIS.

Go figure, regressives undermining elections again, shocking.

But truly, everyone that sees this, check your registration, especially in conservative states.

Anyone in the US can check their voter registration, or register to vote, at vote.org which is a nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to providing voting guidance.

Check your registration every two weeks up to and through the election, NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE

“When Texas sought to enter the Union in 1845 as a slave state, federal law in the United States, based on the Missouri Compromise, prohibited slavery north of 36°30' parallel north. Under the Compromise of 1850, Texas surrendered its lands north of 36°30' latitude.”

Tell me more about how critical race theory shouldn’t be taught in school.

I am a grown ass man and I just learned about this 5 minutes ago.  Fuck everything about trying to hide the sins of our past.

Gee, I wonder why?

I want to emphasize, the number of voters in Texas that want abortion legal in all cases is almost triple that of those that want a total ban.

Texas is not as conservative as y'all think, it's just our population is so disenfranchised, our districts so gerrymandered, and keep having so many out of state conservatives from Cali, Colorado, and New York that it has fully skewed up to the right.

We have an extreme minority rule here. Most of us don't want this.

this state is not a democracy, it is a hostage situation.

Greg Abbot is a demon, and not only shouldn’t be governor, he should be in prison. But my god, this unravelling story is complicated...

  • During the crisis they maxxed out the price for electricity as an incentive for providers to make more electricity faster, but also to keep factories that use fucktons of electricity offline.
  • Seems reasonable maybe? In a free market economy?
  • Only, that didn’t work.
  • It seemed like a logical move at the time, but the fact was: there were no additional electrical providers available, and those that existed were already running at 100%+ and were days away from exhausting their fuel.
  • Not just electrical plants either, but water & sewage treatment plants too -- Texas was days away from its entire infrastructure collapsing.
  • ERCOT’s (intentional!) grid design meant they could not import electricity from outside Texas, meaning any providers that theoretically WOULD help (and earn some sweet sweet profit$) were unable to do so.
  • It’s like offering somebody a billion dollars to flap your arms and fly to the moon.
  • Greg Abbot was DESPERATE to stop the news stories of Texans freezing to death in the dark, so maxxing out the price seemed like an acceptable political move if it had worked.
  • Which doubly fucks Greg Abbot because he personally has a lot of investments in Texas power companies as do his donors.
  • So not only did Greg Abbot’s disastrous policies & subsequent decisions kill Texans, it made him a fuckton of cash.
  • Which, y’know, is a hell of a look. I hope Beto O’Rourke kicks his ass in the next election.

i’m a leftist of course but it has been fucking something to go to beto o’rourke’s twitter and see him actively organizing food drives, informing people of warm shelters, and contacting texas senior citizens to make sure they’re okay

while ted cruz fucking went to cancun

like, republicans are a fucking death cult. they really truly are.

I’m in Texas. Fucking hell. Just got this message from one of my co-workers: “Just sent the kid to fill buckets with snow for toilet flushing after it melts.” Another co-worker hasn’t been online in days; I suspect he’s in one of the areas that hasn’t had power since early Monday morning, but I don’t know. Still others have been hit by rotating power outages, or have lost water pressure, or gas.

And I’m feeling both relieved and kind of guilty that we’ve been one of the people with power–we’re on one of the critical circuits that can’t be turned off, there’s a fire station and other infrastructure they need to protect–and that yeah, my upstairs pipes froze, but they thawed yesterday and no signs of breaks. I’m lucky. And even lucky, I’m still not doing great; we have to keep the temperature low enough (to protect the grid) that my hands are stiffened up, even in fingerless gloves, and my whole body aches, and my already limited spoons are whittled down even further.

The authorities are saying, “Use less power, stop trickling water, insurance should cover it if your pipes freeze, and if not, you may get reimbursement from FEMA…” *Should*. *May*.

Meanwhile, the guys who manage the state electrical grid (and oh, that’s a story in and of itself) live in California and Michigan. Ted fucking Cruz is in fucking Cancun.

The stores are empty, because no trucks have gotten through to restock.

And the worst of all? This is the logical end point of Republican policies. This is what happens when utilities become commoditized. This is what happens when you pursue the ‘free market uber alles’. The Texas electrical grid is independent because Texas didn’t want no fed'rl reg-u-lation, no sir! Which means we have minimal connections to the other two US grids, because selling power interstate would open us up to regulation. Which means we can’t *get* power from the rest of the US, if it had it to spare. On top of that, ERCOT knew ten years ago that the Texas grid was vulnerable to cold weather. But, hey, winterizing infrastructure costs money, cuts profits, doesn’t have an immediate payback.

And if you think it’s a policy set and continued by Republican state leaders, you would be correct. Half of Texas is lacking multiple basic services because rich people playing “You’re not the boss of me” want to get richer. It’s infuriating. And it’s costing lives. (But not rich people’s lives, so they apparently don’t matter.)

People are dying because of this. The number of carbon monoxide poisonings alone… because people are desperate. Disabled people can’t get power to charge their medical devices. Older people get trapped in buildings with no power, surrounded by ice.

Yes. The modern Republican party is a profiteering death cult whose rallying cry is “Got mine, fuck you, die slave!” The Republican state leadership is a shitshow, everyone’s pointing fingers, no one takes responsiblitity for the policies that they’ve been supporting for *decades*.

And I feel so goddamned helpless, and so angry, because this is the 21st century in a modern country, and *this should not be happening*. So thanks, Beto, for stepping up and doing what you can. Because the powers that are sure as hell aren’t.

For those who wanna give Ted Cruz excuses and saying he couldnt do anything about the power or weather.

Let's not forget Ted Cruz tried to constantly argue and start shit with AOC on social media.

Then tried to cosign working with her. And AOC had to tell him to stay away since he contributed to the insurrection.

Seriously no time for jokes about people in Texas suffering today.

@germanova

I’m truly very sorry that happened 😓

But Texans aren’t just “snowed in.” There is a very specific thing happening with our state specific energy grid.

Millions of people have been without ANY ELECTRICITY OR HEAT for 40 hours in places that have been -5 to 20 degrees. Water pipes and main are breaking everywhere so that many people don’t water either.

This didn’t just “happen”

We are suffering under corrupt and inept leadership who MADE this happen.

From the article

I’m too much of a raw nerve and just need to log off for a bit but one more thought before I go

The Texan Revolution formed from the anger of these white settlers in Texas, which was still part of Mexico at this time. They had moved from slave-owning southern part of the US and they became upset because the president of Mexico, Vicente Guerrero, abolished slavery. Mexico actually attempted to restrict American immigration into Mexico-owned Texas! The leaders of the Mexican centralist forces that defeated the Texan revolutionary forces at the Alamo were against slavery. If you ever hear a Texan say “Remember the Alamo!” just remember that the Texan settlers that died there had a vested interest in maintaining control of Texas territory so they could continue to use slave labor.

forget the alamo.

I’ve lived in Texas my whole life and am extremely proud of my Texas heritage. We are required to take a year of Texas history in school. When we learned about the Alamo, they NEVER told us about any of this.

Yeah, the south has a history of erasing history from their textbooks, there was a big push in the 50′s to revise their history books and distort things so that they push the south in a heroic light.

Texas also has the largest single market for textbooks due to having state-level curriculum, and therefore is able to dictate the majority of educational texts produced in the US. Kinda like how California dictates the majority of car emissions standards, except shitty

So the only all-bird rehab center in North Texas is about to shut down

I can’t even put into words how upset I am about this. Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation has been open for almost twenty years, and is the only place in North Texas that takes in literally any type of bird if it’s been injured, orphaned, or otherwise incapacitated. They’re finally out of funds, and if they can’t come up with anything by April 2nd, they’re going to be forced to close their doors.

They’ve never turned away birds. Not when it’s a surprise 200 baby cattle egrets that’ve been orphaned because city planners thought they could cut down their homes and no one would notice. Not when it’s raptors with one good eye and in need of seven different antibiotics. Not even when it’s ducks that irresponsible parents won’t let their kids keep after easter. This is where anyone let me first get up close to birds. I mean, I’ve known I wanted to work with birds and wildlife since I was seven- I’m twenty four now, and halfway through an environmental science master’s and it’s a big reason I kept going.

I’ve been going to this place on and off for ten years, I was THIRTEEN when I started volunteering and seeing all the terrible things that happen to the birds that come in. Not just…hit by trucks, or caught in a hailstorm but parrots that have been left in foreclosed houses for weeks, and roosters that have come out of cock fighting rings and would otherwise be put down because the SPCA and humane societies don’t think they’re salvageable. There’s an emu that was raised there as a baby because no one wanted her. Her name’s Riley and I can’t even begin to comprehend what shutting the doors to the center would mean?

They don’t get government aid. They’ve been funded by the public donating and Kathy, the lady who owns the place, going through her retirement funds and savings and her social security to keep it running. She’s finally run out of money. Please,  just reblog? Even if you can’t donate anything- and I know it’s a lot to ask for poor teenage/college kids to donate money that they don’t have, or struggling artists I know but maybe someone who can spare something will see it eventually? They need $200,000 to keep open for a year to continue to help 4000 birds a year.

Just, thanks for reading, guys. Here’s the gofundme link: http://www.gofundme.com/l8aj7k

Friends, please help spread the word! If you can spare some funds, please consider it! Can we drown them in $5 donations? Anyone have a birthday coming up they can do a fundraiser for instead of gifts?

I can’t tell how old the original post is (thanks tumblr). OP deactivated but I don’t know how to tell when and which April? The gofundme was created a few years back BUT smart people create fundraisers like that before going through their retirement funds, and they are almost at the $100k point. We can HELP!! I’ll be sharing this on my facebook page, I have naturalist friends in the DFW area, and they can spread the word (if they haven’t already).

TEXAS FRIENDS: if this happens to you you need to call two organizations. THE FBI: Tell them that a government official is acting in defiance of the constitution. THE ACLU: They will give you the attorneys and legal backing necessary to get a marriage license. This is entirely unconstitutional and unenforceable. Know your options.

Signal boosting this cause this is incredibly important

Signal boosting and also adding this important piece of information:

The clergy can do whatever, they always have done, and there’s always the option of having a justice of the peace or a hired ordained minister from an outside organization (such as the Universal Life Church) perform your wedding and file the appropriate legal documents. This law, according to the article, affects the CLERGY, but not the offices or institutions responsible for issuing wedding licenses.

IF YOU ARE MET WITH OPPOSITION FROM COUNTY OR STATE EMPLOYEES WHILE TRYING TO OBTAIN YOUR WEDDING LICENSE, CONTACT A LAWYER IMMEDIATELY.
