Honestly though. In the original pitch for the show, he was described as having sexual identity issues and knowing that he’s different from what was considered normal in the 80s. It was also stated that he uses D&D and gaming as an escape. When you combine the fact that he lost a pretty good chunk of his adolescence to trauma and the fact that he is a young gay boy during the height of the AIDS crisis, is it any wonder why he is clinging to his childhood so much? It’s not so much that he has unrealistic expectations of his friends, it’s that Will is terrified of growing up because of what that would mean for him personally.
