Something needs to be done about teachers who hate kids tbh

My sister is currently getting her doctorate in child psychology & education, but years ago she worked as a substitute english teacher at a high school in nyc. She spent half a year subbing for a woman who was out for surgery, and had been teaching english there for years and years. Most of the kids in this class were remedial; they had failed english before and had to retake it. Most of them hated the class, and they hated literature, because they had been made to feel unintelligent. My sister decided to introduce them to poetry, which was a little easier to digest than long form prose, and had them read Robert Frost's "Fire and Ice." And the kids loved it! They connected with it, they were spirited and engaged in class for the first time all year. They wrote their own poetry! They started seeking out and reading poetry on their own! They were all on track to get a C, B or A in that class. And then the original teacher returned and failed every single student, to "teach them all a lesson". That was the moment my sister decided to go into administration so she could hopefully prevent that sort of thing from happening. But it's difficult. Despite numerous complaints from parents and other teachers, that teacher had a job there for decades. She continued to have a job there. There are a lot of teachers like her, wielding power and taking their frustrations out on kids, especially disabled and remedial kids. And students have so few advocates in the classroom.

ladies and gentlemen, the american education system

My school apparently ran out of toilet paper a few weeks ago and my Spanish teacher was telling the girls to keep a roll in their purses and the guys to keep a roll in our backpacks. North American Education system.

this is basically any public school in the world tbh

Whoop there it is

No I’m not even kidding I bet my life that there is equipment and a well managed field for the football team. Probably a good baseball and basketball team for guys. Other sports not so much.

This is NOT any public schooling system in the world! Australian public schools do not have this problem! How the fuck does a school not afford basic bathroom amenities?! If that happened here there would be an immediate school funding revision campaign! I assume you guys are joking about the football teams because there’s no way overblown American sports movies are real. Does your government just… not fund schools?

A running joke in my high school is “…but we can’t afford paper!” because a few years ago, my entire school system had us recycling each and every scrap and refusing to pay to get teachers copier paper. We were all asked to bring in our own paper, because school just wasn’t going to provide paper anything. Ironically, same year the football field was renovated.

That…

That can’t possibly be right.

My high school had chunks of the ceiling falling down periodically, because of water and mold damage. I remember being in the gym for basketball practice and a huge grate fell down and scared the crap out of us. No one was ever hurt, and the state health department declared the levels of mold to be “not immediately dangerous” and so it was left alone. They once had to close down an entire section of hallway and stairs because one year, the toilets flooded on the second floor and soaked into the ceiling and walls. The next year, a chunk of ceiling fell out right below that, and the toxic variety of black mold was found. Again, the levels were “not dangerous” so they blocked off the area for a few weeks (making it impossible to get to class on time) until it was “cleaned up”. There were no windows, because when the school was built it was right next to an international airport (that has since moved) and the noise was too much at the time. So in order to keep the air flowing, they pumped air conditioning year round, including winter.  And yes- the football field was in fact completely renovated before the buildings were even touched. 5 years prior to the original start date of high school building renovations. Also, while the football field was built with out a single hiccup, the school renovation was actually stopped after it started and halted for 4 years because the town didn’t want to spend the money on it. People argued that taxes shouldn’t be raised for that since they felt the buildings were fine as they were. Welcome to American public schools.

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOUR SCHOOL SYSTEM??

FOOTBALL

OVERT RELIGIOUS LOBBYING

SCHOOL SHOOTINGS

CRUMBLING BUILDINGS AND NO SOAP

DO YOU LIVE IN A SEMI-DYSTOPIAN NOVEL

and don’t even get us started on the quality of the food at school.

No shit. I ate a moldy peanut butter sandwich once and had to go home sick. Also, the chicken was always still cold in the middle. And the state of the milk coolers was just disgusting. More than once, I had to ask for a refund on my milk because it was so old it had chunks. I am so glad I graduated last year and left that shit behind me.

Oh and btw, those tampon machines in the girls restrooms? completely empty.

Our maintenance guy put two lines of duct tape on a walkway roof that is currently falling inwards

Back when I was in school they got a $2000 cell phone blocker but we had to cross out “USSR” on our maps and add in all the countries that happened after it was made. We didn’t even have tables to eat at. We just sat in the halls or outside.

This is about Sci-Hub. yeah we get it.. gatekeep knowledge and protect the interests of capital…

Listen, this is serious.

Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!

It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.

Like, it’s literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.

So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?

Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.

Oh, and while we’re talking about books, if you’ve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely don’t go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately they’re completely free.

People have this weird belief that if you're critical of a system or tradition, then it must be because you failed to live up to that system or tradition. The idea of having a principled stance, regardless of whether or not *you* personally benefit from society accepting that stance, is foreign to so many people. And this belief is really fucking important for and beneficial to the elites of this country. If you can get the masses to equate criticizing you and the institutions you control with abject personal failure, congratulations, you've just made yourself immune to accountability

Avatar

Also, as a failure of the education system: we need to spend more time listening to the people our systems leave behind. "Well of course you're critical of this; you failed" should not be a conversation-ender even if it is true.

For any lovelies with graduations coming up 💕

You all deserve to look bomb as hell at your graduation 😘

Aww, that’s so cute :)

this video starts circulating every year around graduation season and it makes me really happy

not graduating yet but i’m playing at one or two ceremonies! happy trails graduates!! 🧑‍🎓

This looks objectively better than mine but if you don’t mind looking like a dork (or if you have a really heavy decoration on your cap) you can also punch holes in the corners and run a chin strap under it. I got through my graduation with a 2-lb plastic turtle strapped to my head that way

Man where was this when I graduated high school, my hair is super thick and wavy and I could NOT get that fucker to stay on. Of course the popular girls with their stick straight blond hair looked perfect. Just one final insult at the end of my dismal public school experience.

“but why do we need to teach or mention asexuality in health class”

well my guy, maybe so asexual teens dont think something’s wrong w them ???

and also, because a scary high amount of asexual teens force themselves into awful sexual situations and abusive relationships because they think there is something wrong with them and maybe we could make it so they didn’t do that

Reblogging this because it’s so damn important.

It’s just as important for non-asexuals to understand that lack of sexual attraction is real and valid.

THIS IS SO IMPORTANT

questbedhead

Because if you tried to teach english without ever mentioning poetry that would be an incomplete english class like damn dude teach the damn topic

Man I hope they cancel standardized testing, any education professional can tell you it’s a bunch of useless horseshit that does nothing except make students and teachers miserable while utterly failing to accurately gauge understanding.

“why yall gotta make everything about race?”

because everything is about race. you just upset cause we’re talking about it.

my strangest legacy - in high school, for one reason or another (I can’t remember) my friends and I wrote “34 days until March 2nd” on the whiteboard in the drama classroom. It was completely arbitrary but we kept it it up, “30 days until March 2nd”  ”23 days until March 2nd” etc. It spread around enough that the entire school is buzzing about what is going to happen on March 2nd. We figure we should think of something and decide to bring in cake. There were about 13 of us in total committed to bringing a cake. On March 2nd, during 3rd period lunch we all entered the cafeteria in a line (the parade of the cakes) and laid them out—a grand cake buffet for everyone in that lunch period. We did it the next year. And after we graduated it kept going.

This past March 2nd was the 9th year they’ve done it. It’s become a school sponsored event. There are t-shirts for this thing every year. March 2nd is cake day. I am a god.

my former teacher sent me a package. it’s the 10th anniversary this year. they’re already getting ready for march 2nd. it’s january.

it’s March 2021 and i’ve been told there will be cake on the 2nd. I was recently sent the t-shirt design for this year. it’s the 16th anniversary and it will be the last March 2nd Cake Day at school for my former teacher who is retiring this year

This used to be called “Auto Shop” and “Home Economics,” subjects which were included in nearly every high school curriculum up until the 1980s. Auto maintenance, budget management, sewing skills, cooking, and other basic Adulting skills were actually taught in classroom settings. But suddenly all that money got funneled away to sports and graduation requirements shifted toward standardized tests because those were somehow more? important? than life skills? and the home ec and shop classes were no longer taught, even as electives. We’ve been steadily losing arts classes for similar reasons.

And so students leave school with a thorough grounding in football and calculus, but having no idea how to sew on a button or change a tire.

Petition to bring back these classes in every single middle and high school in the country.

if you are in high school and you follow me idc if you learn nothing else from me, but learn this: do not join the fucking military. they will promise you all sorts of things in exchange for joining their muder-system for a few years. do not listen to them. you won’t find a sense of purpose, you won’t find an adventure, you might not even get the money they promise you for college. if you survive, you’ll come back with blood on your hands, feeling just as aimless as before except knowing you’re a killer. the government will drop you like hot potatoes the second you are not useful to them, and you will be on your own with nothing but some ptsd and a more intimate understanding of the phrase “blood for oil.”

my econ teacher has been trying to teach about scarcity by having a limited amount of graph paper available for students who don’t have any (she has the last few pages in a pad and when it’s gone, it’s gone) but it’s very undercut by the fact that i have a whole pad and i’ll let people have a piece whenever they need it

Avatar
beabcurd

she’s teaching scarcity, you’re teaching the value of sharing a resource when you have enough to spare

YES EXACTLY!!!!!

Avatar
pom-seedss

In particular, she’s teaching artificial scarcity by being a person in an authoritative position withholding resources that are actually abundant from people who need them.

You are breaking the illusion of power and scarcity by showing the supposedly scarce resource is actually in abundance and if distributed properly everyone would have what they needed to pass the class.

She's also the person that creates the need for the paper for assignments in the first place
