I’m a fan of Saga, The Walking Dead, The Hunger Games, The Lunar Chronicles, Outlander, Timeless, Game of Thrones (sometimes), Twilight (occasionally), Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Avatar: The Last Airbender/Legend Of Korra, and a bunch of other stuff. Carrie White and Bree Tanner deserved better.
Currently reading: Voyager by Diana Gabaldon

you can’t support autistic people and support the police. No amount of paint jobs or sensitivity training can stop police from killing with impunity

And fuck the jigsaw puzzle imagery advanced by the eugenicists at Autism Speaks. We’re not a “puzzle” to be “solved“

Half of all people killed by cops have a disability, because cops aren’t trained to recognize or deal with people with disabilities and very few places have people who are trained for those situations easily accessible during emergencies. So the cops come in and do what they’re paid to do - murder anyone who’s inconvenient to the state

I’m gonna be real here, I take neurotypicals’ opinions on “weird” people far more seriously than I take their statements of support for me or for autistic people in general.

Like your opinions on furries (putting aside any sexual connotations) are HONESTLY a better litmus test of whether you are a safe person for me or any autistic people than your opinions on Five Year Old Boy Disease.

let me explain…

No one would think it was funny to bully an Autistic Child™, and you don’t think bullying Autistic Children™ is funny! That’s horrible! But when I say that story about a “weird kid” you knew that got bullied isn’t funny, you’re like “Well…that’s different! She was really weird, I mean she MEOWED at people!”

…bruh

Yup. “Of course I support you, autistic person, but look at this guy over there being weird!” So what you’re telling me is you’re supporting me, who is autistic, as long as I don’t behave autistic. Got it. Bye.

“We’re not making fun of him for being autistic, we’re making fun of him for being weird”

Nothing about us without us.  Image description: [pale purple and yellow background with dark text] This April, don’t support an organization that harms autistic people. [crossed out logo for Autism Speaks] Support one built by autistic people, for autistic people. [logos for the Autistic Self Advocacy Network and the Autism Women’s Network]

Reblogging to spread the word, cause evidence shows that Autism $peaks are classic horror movie villains.

Reblogging because I’ve always wondered who to support instead of AS.

April is “Autism Awareness Month”, so here are a few reminders for you to keep in mind:

  • Autism Speaks is a hate group.
  • The reasoning behind “Light It Up Blue” (that there are more autistic boys than girls) stems from a tendency in doctors to base their autism diagnoses on stereotypes and sometimes refuse to diagnose girls.
  • Most autistic people don’t want a “cure” for autism and don’t support Autism Speaks.
  • Autism Speaks has given abusive/ableist parents legitimacy by portraying autism as a terrifying, life-ruining affliction and sympathising with parents who have contemplated killing their children, or actually killed them.
  • The views of autistic people are more important in this topic than the views of our allistic family members and peers.
  • Autism is not a disease.
  • Very little (about 4%) of Autism Speaks’ proceeds go toward supporting autistic people. More of it goes toward catering.
  • Autism is not a tragedy.
  • What autistic people need is acceptance, not awareness.

if you want to find out more about why autism $peaks is horrible, i recommend this video by amythest schaber. amythest is an autistic youtuber and all of their videos are very educational, so if you’d also like to find out more about autism check out their channel, or their blog.

also, if you wanna support an organisation that is actually run BY and for autistic people, i strongly recommend ASAN. ASAN is a fantastic organisation that refuses to let conversations about autism be led by allistic people & seeks equal access, rights, and opportunities for autistics. their motto is “nothing about us without us”.

Might have these out of order but just a good thread to share.

on one hand this thread makes me want to cry a lot and on the other I’m like, well, my brain is a complex system and now I have a sort of entry point to figure out how it works, so that’s good

A busker plays music for a blind autistic girl sitting in a wheelchair. She’s being allowed to stim (flapping and rubbing her shirt) and respond to the music her own natural way. The busker places her hand on the guitar to let her see what is creating the music, and she smiles as he sings to her. They made a connection. That is autism acceptance. Take note. Many autistic people will open up to you like a flower if you gently connect with them in ways that work for them instead of forcing them to connect with you in ways that only work for you. I hope that sweet kid grows up to be a musician or artist! :)

It’s Autism Acceptance Month and that post I just reblogged really annoyed me! So for the rest of April I’ll be reblogging/making at least one post in solidarity  as a small way to support our autistic followers!

#RedInstead

Still one of my favourite videos.

PSA to our followers this Autism Acceptance Month:

  • Use Autism **Acceptance** Month (as opposed to Autism Awareness Month).
  • NO “light it up blue” or puzzle pieces. Google “Autism Speaks hate group” to learn more.
  • Use red or gold instead, which are colors supported by the autistic community.
  • Use identity-first language (most autistic people prefer “autistic” instead of “person with autism”), but don’t police the language of someone who prefers to be called a person with autism.
  • NO scare terms like “suffering with autism” or “afflicted with autism.”
  • Avoid functioning labels like “high functioning” or “low functioning.”
  • If autistic voices are not at the center of your efforts, you’re doing it wrong.
  • When in doubt, ASK AN AUTISTIC PERSON.
  • To learn more about autism, visit autistic-run organizations like the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) and Autism Women’s Network (AWN).
