why do so many teenagers follow me. you know i do drugs right.

advice for teens: don't do drugs and drive, don't do drugs with people that don't care about you or people you feel responsible for, don't do drugs for the first time in public, and don't do drugs for the first time alone. also tbh i would recommend not doing anything stronger than weed or alcohol until you're above the age of 18. also nicotine isn't as good as you think it is. addiction is real and seek help if you find yourself leaning on a substance to clear your head/relax more than, like, twice per week. stay safe.

telling teens not to do drugs doesn't work. practical advice like this is so important.

Treat drugs like sex. It's not inherently bad, but things can go VERY wrong, very quickly, if you aren't careful; and if you start making detrimental life changes to accommodate it (rather than it supplementing the joy you already find in life), that's an addiction and you gotta do something about it.

I just watched Glass Onion and I'd seen the Mona Lisa Discourse and the "but hydrogen doesn't work that way" discourse, but I need to know if anyone has brought up the definitely intentional and objectively funniest departure from reality in the movie:

Kombucha is a live culture. That's the whole point- it's why it gets marketed as a probiotic. It's kind of like growing sourdough starter on sweet tea instead of flour. The culture used to ferment it contains yeast that breaks the sugar down into alcohol, but it also contains bacteria that break alcohol down into acetic acid, which is what gives it its taste.

For Jared Leto to have brewed 9% ABV hard kombucha, he has to have either a) messed up the process of making it so badly that it isn't really kombucha anymore, or b) added so much alcohol after the fact that it would probably kill off most of the culture.

In other words, Jared Leto's hard kombucha is the most thematically appropriate form of alcohol the movie could possibly contain.

can yall think about how you treat addicts please. dont accuse people you dont like of being addicts like its some moral failing. stop treating addicts like abusive violent monsters or dirty homeless subhumans. stop using druggie as an insult. stop spitting bullshit about “attention seeking teens/young adults who romanticize their addiction and dont want to get help” when in reality young people (especially people of color, lgbtq people, and traumatized/mentally ill people) are most susceptible to addiction and alcoholism and people acting like being an addict is some horrible thing that makes you undeserving of sympathy only makes it 100 times harder for people to seek help. stop pretending you care about or support addicts if you really only give a shit about addicts already in recovery (and even then only as long as they never talk about struggling or relapsing or withdrawal).

if you dont care about poc (especially black people) who are addicts you dont care about addicts. if you dont care about disabled addicts you dont care about addicts. if you dont care about addicts who are sex workers you dont care about addicts. if you dont care about addicts who dont/cant work you dont care about addicts. all addicts deserve care, support, and respect period.

Pro tip from a college student and a biochem major: if you're drinking alcohol and you feel like you need to throw up, just throw up. Your body's natural response to too much alcohol is emesis, aka vomiting. If you wanna vomit it's because your body has had too much. Just throw up. You will feel SO much better both directly afterwards and the following morning.

I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating: this is why you shouldn't mix alcohol and weed. Your body's natural response to too much alcohol is emesis (vomiting). Weed is an anti emetic. This means that if you have too much alcohol, the weed will make it very fucking hard for you to throw it back up.

It also means that you won't feel how much you're drinking because usually, you gauge when to stop when you feel like throwing up. But weed takes away that nausea sensation. So you're also a lot more likely to drink in excess and your body won't be able to get rid of it.

Another important drug fact since pharma is my main study focus: if you do drugs, particularly hard drugs, TELL YOUR DOCTORS. Especially if you're going in for surgery. If you do hard drugs, especially if one of those drugs is cocaine, some anaesthetics can literally fry your heart and kill you. Your doctors and surgeons won't rat you out, they just don't want to accidentally kill you out of ignorance.

Scary, scary.

Gonna add on to this: From the other side of the bar, I see this crap all the time. Seriously. I work at a high-density bar, and let me tell you, I have anywhere from 10-20 guys every night come up and tell me to, “serve her a stronger drink, I’m trying to get lucky tonight, know what I mean?” usually accompanied with a wink and a gesture at a girl who, in my experience, is going to go from mildly buzzed to definitively hammered if I keep serving her. Now, I like to think I’m a responsible bartender, so I usually tell guys like that to piss off, and, if I can, try to tell the girl’s more sober friends that they need to keep an eye on her. But everyone- just so you know, most of the time, when someone you don’t know is buying you a drink, they’re NOT doing it out of a sense of cordiality, they’re buying you a drink for the sole purpose of making you let your guard down. So:

Tips for getting drinks-

1. ALWAYS GO TO THE BAR TO GET YOUR OWN DRINK, DO NOT LET STRANGERS CARRY YOUR DRINKS. This is an opportune time for dropping something into your cocktail, and you’re none the wiser.

2.IF YOU ORDER SOMETHING NON-ALCOHOLIC, I promise you, the bartender doesn’t give two shits that you’re not drinking cocktails with your friends, and often, totally understands that you don’t want to let your guard down around strangers. Usually, you can just tell the bartender that you’d like something light, and that’s a big clue to us that you’re uncomfortable with whomever you’re standing next to. Again, we see this all the time.

3. If you’re in a position to where you feel uncomfortable not ordering alcohol:

Here’s a list of light liquors, and mixers that won’t get you drunk, and will still look like an actual cocktail:

X-rated + sprite = easy to drink, sweet, and 12% alcoholic content. Not strong at all, usually runs $6-$8, depending on your state.

Amaretto + sour= sweet, not strong, 26%.

Peach Schnapps+ ginger ale= tastes like mellow butterscotch, 24%.

Melon liquor (Midori, in most bars) + soda water = not overly sweet, 21%

Coffee liquor (Kahlua) +soda = not super sweet, 20%.

Hope this helps someone out!

Backing this up from years of bar tending.

Adding to this:

When I was a fresh bartender, I had a couple sitting in the corner, already drinking when I started my shift. They seemed like they knew each other really well considering how much they had their hands on one another. But I still came by and asked if they were okay. The man just waved me off while the woman said, “I need some water.”

The man laughed it off and told me, “She doesn’t need any water. She’s fine.”

She was not fine. Clearly. I decided I was going to cut the two off anyway and bring them some water. As I was filling up the glasses, I heard the woman say, “Stop. I said no. I don’t feel good.”

Her tone and attitude changed instantly. She kept pushing his hand away when he reached for her face, turned her head away when he tried to kiss her. Loudly told him, “Stop. I’m done for tonight.”

So I made sure to refill her water the moment she finished it, and I stayed within earshot of them the whole night. And every time I did, the man got mad at me, told me to leave them alone. Their friends were there, surrounding them and told me that those two always fought when they were drunk and apologized, so I relaxed a little. But the last time I refilled her drink, I heard a loud crash.

She fell out of her stool and hit her head on the floor. And he calmly drank his drink. Their friends didn’t even blink. I jumped over the bar to tend to her and he just said, “Don’t worry, I’ll take her home. She always ends up like this. She drinks too much.”

But it didn’t sound right.

Then the woman began convulsing.

I yelled for the other bartender to call 911 and when I did, the guy suddenly disappeared. I tried asking thr friends questions about him and they just blew it off as the woman being a black our drunk. And one of them said, “We’ll get her home. Don’t worry.”

But when thr EMTs showed up with the police, they all disappeared too.

A few days later the woman came with an attorney. She asked me and the other bartender who worked before me some questions. Turns out, she didn’t know any of those people. They weren’t her friends or her boyfriend. They had met that night, when the guy asked her if he could buy her a drink. At the hospital, they found traces of Rohypnol in her system.

The guy had Roofied her. And his friends were in on it.

The security camera footage showed he had put something in her drink when she left for the bathroom before my shift.

So seriously, it happens. You have to be careful with your drinks! Always watch it, don’t let anyone handle it, and take it with you wherever you go–even the bathroom. Or if you’re a regular at that bar, ask the bartender to put it behind the bar. We’ll do it.

Rb for that last add, don’t ever worry about being polite! Protect urself!

REBLOG AND SPREAD THE WORD!

I feel like EVERYONE should know this, even if you don’t drink.

I want to add onto this:

Never take your eyes off your drink, never let anyone else carry your drink. If you leave your drink unattended or someone brings it to you, assume it was drugged and abandon it. Better to spend some more money to get a new one you know is safe than to play Russian Roulette with the one you already bought.

(CW: Subtance Abuse) A lot of people on this hellsite (rightfully) look up to John Mulaney for a number of reasons, so with the news of his return to rehab to handle SUD-related issues, please be kind to yourself and to anyone you know who’s struggling with addiction.

Addiction is not a weakness or a character flaw. Sobriety is often a lifelong endeavor. John Mulaney has been candid about his substance abuse in the past; he’s been working on his sobriety for over 15 years. He isn’t any weaker for a relapse, and his desire to go into rehab is commendable and honestly brave. He is absolutely still a person to look up to: his worth as a person has not “changed” with this revelation.

Addiction is isolating in regular conditions. Given the hell year we’ve had, where our existence has become even further defined by distance and isolation, people who are struggling with substance abuse and addiction are probably even more isolated than ever. Be kind to yourself, and be kind to any loved ones who are feeling isolated or struggling with SUD.

For US friends, here’s the SAMHSA resources page — their referral service doesn’t require insurance and is completely confidential. If you don’t have insurance, they can get you in contact with state sponsored offices; they also have a directory to search for programs.

(If anyone has more info on how to seek counseling and rehab for addiction with/without insurance, please add it in the notes!)

While I wish John Mulaney the best as a fellow human and want to thank him for all the happiness he’s brought me with his comedy, I don’t want him to work on his sobriety simply because I want to hear his next comedy special. I don’t want anyone’s battle for sobriety to be framed in terms of how they can return to their normal function, to their “usefulness” to society. I just want him to be happy and healthy with his wife and his dog and himself, full stop. I’d like to remind everyone that nobody — Mulaney, me, or the person reading this — ever, ever owes anyone a joke or a smile.

Stay safe and healthy this winter !

Turns out this has nothing to do with the plague, it’s even weirder than that - during the Renaissance, Florence didn’t collect any taxes on wine produced ‘for the family’. So obviously some of the city’s richest men decided they’d start selling their wines directly from their own homes instead of selling it through restaurants, thus making a lot more money (no taxes and no middle man). Wine could be bought by the bottle or by the glass, and the fact the customers didn’t set foot inside the house probably a) prevented theft and b) preserved the illusion that the place was not a place of trade.

Occasionally, alms for also left in there.

These ‘buchette del vino’ (literally ‘little wine holes’) are a typical Florentine phenomenon and had been in use until fairly recently; over the last decade people have started restorating and reopening them. There are about 170 of them around Florence. Here are a few ones:

not weird. in Italy, the reason is ALWAYS tax evasion

......... different fantasy races should be impacted differently by each other's alcohol

no more if this "fine elvin wine" shit, I am going to personally write a fantasy setting in which every human knows that elf booze tastes and feels like fantasy la croix. there's barely even a flavor, and you'd need to drink a few to even get tipsy.

meanwhile, every human with a lick of common sense knows that you need to plan accordingly if you're going to be drinking dwarven liquor, because it hits you hard and fast and you'll lose feeling in your legs faster than you thought was physically possible. the hangovers are the stuff of legend.

the flip side is that elves are an entire race of (comparative) lightweights, and a whole gaggle of teenange elves can get piss drunk passing around one bottle of fruity human wine

I think there's some compatability among drinks brewed by reptilian races (dragonborn, lizardfolk, tortles, kobolds, etc) although you run into similar translation issues as mammalians, but there is absolutely no crossover. like if a drsgonborn and a dwarf in a (very cosmopolitan) tavern were to switch drinks it would be a nonstarter.

"this is basically just a capri sun," the dragonborn says, disappointed.

"cool, I'm pretty sure I just drank actual paint thinner," the dwarf says. "get me to a hospital."

humans and halflings are probably the most compatible drinkers of any two races, although halflings find most human wines, beers, ciders, etc, a little too dry and bland for their liking. halfling alternatives are very sweet, which makes them a huge hit among the 'I like alcohol but I don't want it to taste like alcohol' crowd

I think it would be very funny if being drunk was like... a relatively new cultural development for gnomes? there’s just something about their wacky gnomish constitution that prevented them coming by it naturally (traditionally they’re more into a variety of mushrooms and other recreational plants) but once they started mingling more with more alcohol-happy races they learned VERY quickly and started opening, basically, turbo-breweries that are basically one part distillery and one part wizard tower. VERY popular job for young alchemists trying to make some good money, and the reason why gnomes are known (among other things) for operating the craziest night clubs

here’s who I think should be able to get drunk but become sober at will:

1.) sufficiently powerful paladins and clerics

2.) aasimar [all of them]

2.) very very few tieflings. it’s not universal at all, but few tiefling traits are. I know 5e has really solidified them as horns + tails + inhuman skin color but we need to be making them weirder

I agree with every single part of this but especially that we all need to be doing our part to make tieflings weirder, and also please someone overnight me some halfling booze
