btw jamie is insane in the macra terror. he sneaks out where there's toxic gas and giant crabs trying to kill him of his own accord, and stays out there for like half of the serial ALONE and he beats the giant crabs with a stick and escapes and survives even after inhaling all of that gas he's literally insane and an icon

like it's absolutely just a throwaway line, but any sort of celebration of jamie becoming a full-fledged piper should involve his father, right? the man who would have taught him, who he presumably aimed to be like, at least musically/professionally. we should be hearing about how jamie's father looks so proud here.
but we don't. he's not mentioned a single time in the whole of the phantom piper, let alone here. jamie's foremost memory of the event is seeing his /mother/ looking proud. as if she's the one he looks to first, she's the one whose approval he values most, she's the one who sticks most clearly in his mind.
it's so tiny and so telling and I have no idea if the author even intended anything at all with it but god am I glad it's in there
I'm never going to get over the phantom piper mentioning jamie's mother but not his father, & implying that as he got older he idolised his grandfather less but never stopped being shaped by his grandmother's advice. like yesssss tell me all about his closeness to the women in his family & alienation from the men I'm definitely not going to start messing around with his relationship to gender

#second doctor#frrrrrrr#like on the one hand it does make sense that two would kind of. keep a handle on himself here#& brush things off rather than risk breaking down/not reveal how upset he is. especially in front of the time lords who have him on trial#/for/ interfering and being too attached#ON THE OTHER HAND.#it HAS always killed me that we get this rather than something more emotional over the last we see of jamie
