Everyone in NYC got a screeching emergency alert telling us not to heat up our food. Yet all the commercial billboards, NYPD stations, and other utterly unnecessary utilities are left powered on. That’s class warfare, plain and simple.

there is a drought, not enough water to drink, yet the wealthy still have ornamental fountains running, full swimming pools, and lush green golf courses

has anyone payed attention to the stuff going down in ethiopia or are we just Miscellaneous Blacks to yall

earlier today (june 2) addis ababa police killed three muslims after friday prayer as retaliation from the protests of last week. the protesters were speaking out against the demolition of over a dozen mosques for (what every sane person knows is) our prime minister's new city—sheger city—made only for people of oromia decent at the expense of literally everyone else.

ethiopians of every ethnicity (except oromia bc this government benefits only them) are protesting this city. this is not the first time the ethiopian government, specifically our [redacted] of a prime minister, has intervened in religious affairs. earlier this year, he tried to intervene in the ethiopian orthodox church. fortunately those efforts have seemingly paused (for now).

as expected, there aren't many sources on this matter that aren't in amharic and unfortunately i can't translate. here's what i have so far (source 1) (source 2) please lmk if you find anything else, i'll add it to the list

as of today (june 4) the number of demolished mosques has risen to 22. there is a complete news blackout, people are still being arrested or killed by police for protesting. my mom's been calling family to get updates but there isn't much information at the moment.

So uh, if you want to know what Wizards of the Coast is up to, they allegedly sent the Pinkertons (a private security guard, which is a fancy way to say for-hire thugs) to the person who leaked a Magic: The Gathering set. Who wasn't under a NDA or anything (not that it'd justify said measures).

The Pinkertons went to his home, threatened to put him in jail, seized a bunch of his stuff and made his wife cry.

Anyways, uh, I wonder if there's still gonna be bootlickers trying to defend WOTC on this?

(Reblogs for awareness are appreciated!)

Here's a more detailed article on the matter. It's been confirmed by WOTC that they did send the Pinkertons to this guy's home as part of "an investigation". Fucking HELL.

I feel like nobody on Tumblr knows that the international space station is being discontinued.

Did you know that? In less than a decade it will be gone

deleting the dumb hysteria to give some relevant info:

  • Don't read Space news from mainstream media, thats how you get "Oumuamua was aliens!!1!one!!" trending, there are many very good reporters who specialise in this stuff, for instance Eric Berger at Ars Technica
  • the ISS was not designed to last until the 2030s, to keep it up that long they are pushing the materials and construction past what it was designed for, this is not something you want to do in Space for very long. At most they can push it to 2033 really/
  • Russia has threatened to pull out of the ISS for years to try and get leverage with the US, even before the invasion of Ukraine. They barely have a functioning space program left currently and almost certainly won't by 2030
  • the ISS isn't the last bastion between capitalism and space, in fact billionaires can and have been buying tickets up to the ISS for decades

in the latest cyber-news: the internet archive has lost their case against 4 major publishing houses (verge article). they’re going to appeal, but this is still a bad outcome. the fate of the internet is currently hanging in the balance because 4 multibillionare publishing groups missed out on like $15 of combined revenue during the pandemic because of the archive’s online library service. it’s so fucking stupid.

for those who don’t know what the internet archive is, it’s a virtual library full of media. books, magazines, recordings, visuals, flash games, websites - a lot of these things either don’t exist anymore or cannot be found & bought. heard of the wayback machine? that’s part of the internet archive. it is the most important website to exist, and i don’t say that lightly. if the internet archive goes down, the cultural loss will be immeasurable.

so how can you help?

  1. boycott the publishing companies involved in this. they’re absolute ghouls, frankly, and don’t deserve a penny. the companies involved are harpercollins (imprints), wiley (imprints), penguin random house llc (imprints), and hachette book group (imprints). make sure the websites are set to your location as it may differ worldwide.
  2. learn to torrent. download a torrent client (i recommend transmission), a vpn (i recommend protonvpn - sign up and choose the area that’s closest to your continent/country), and hit up /r/piracy on reddit for websites. with torrenting, you can get (almost) any media you want for free in high quality, with add-ons such as subtitles, and with no risks of loss. i would also recommend getting into the habit of watching stuff online for free. the less you can pay to a giant corporation, the better.
  3. get into the habit of downloading and archiving materials. find a TB external hard drive, ideally the higher the better. it’ll probably cost around $60 for 1TB and continue to go up, but they’re so so useful. if you can’t afford a drive, look for any GB harddrives or memory sticks you have lying around and just fill them up. videos, pdfs, magazines, songs, movies, games - anything you can rip and download and fit on there, do it, because nothing is permanent.
  4. donate to the internet archive. this is the most important option on the list. the IA relies entirely on funding, and it’s going to need more to fight this case. whatever you can donate, do it. i promise it’s helpful.

and finally…

cannot stress enough that donating to the internet archive to help them appeal this without going broke is the most important thing you can do right now. my day job revolves around fulfilling digital article and book scan requests at an academic library and a huge part of that is borrowing from other libraries that do controlled digital lending (incl. the internet archive!). copyright law is already hugely restrictive on what we can and can't lend, and we absolutely don't have the option to pirate anything for our patrons due to being a large academic institution. it's difficult to overstate just how bad this ruling could end up being for libraries that have digital lending programs, esp ones that rely on CDR for old/archival/hard-to-find texts.

historical note- the beginning of most LGBT rights in law started with the MIME RIOTS of 1968 over the right to preform lewd plays (it was about a candlestick maker and was openly bisexual, the candles used were exactly what you are imagining) enshrining public displays of sexual identity under the right to free speech aggressively clowning to destroy the systems of oppression is a noble tradition to keep alive, and historically speaking it works

Of course. In storytelling, that's the Trickster archetype and it's as old as the human race.

“We will be focused on removing old, unused, and inactive content that is not tied to a user account from our platform as well as nudity, pornography, & sexually explicit content,” the page reads. “Most notably, this would include explicit/pornographic content.” Imgur notes that it will “employ automated detection software” alongside human moderators to identify explicit content.

If you need a place for fanart:

Squidge is free, and has a TOS that’s about the same as AO3’s.

from a glance, Squidge looks promising..

HOWEVER it is hosted by ONE person?? what happens when that person dies, or their personal circumstances change??

Squidge is not a trustworthy long-term alternative.

Squidge.org has recently registered as a nonprofit, like the OTW. (I’m on the board.) (This is very new and very tiny.) https://www.squidgeworld.org/ is the first/only AO3 clone on the internet right now.

And there are agreements in place - if something disastrous happens to the owner, the OTW takes it over. (The OTW may not be able to do much with the image side of things. But they’ll be able to keep it stable.)

Squidge has been around over 20 years. It’s as stable as fan-run sites get. And he’s aware that it needs more stability than “I’ll keep the servers up,” so he’s recently made changes that allow for long-term viability.

Also: Like the OTW, he owns the servers. He’s not beholden to Amazon or Google’s TOS for content permissions.

All UK phones will go off with a loud siren-like sound on April 23rd at 3PM

Screenshot reads as follows:

The new Emergency Alerts system will be tested nationally on Sunday 23rd April.
The system will warn people when their lives are in danger. An Emergency Alert is a loud, siren-like sound with a message on your mobile phone screen.
See more: https://gov.uk/alerts
The Emergency Alerts system is now live and it will be used to warn people when lives are in danger

Please don't ignore this as people with mental health conditions, those in abusive environments, et cetera, who are unaware of this might panic or be in harms way.

If you have a secret phone because you're living in an abusive situation, here is how to turn these Emergency Alerts off because they will still make a sound with your phone on silent:

Even if you're not from the UK, please share this if you can!

Please pre-alert anyone who might be endangered by this or who might just be totally alarmed by their phone making a loud noise and sending them an 'Emergency Alert' text. Many people may be concerned that it's a hoax even if the message clarifies it's a test. For neurodivergent people or people with PTSD this is also a risk. It could just be super annoying in the theatre or if you're putting a baby to sleep.

Either by preparing or by turning it off, please get yourself and friends and family ready

Tonight I gave Art Spiegelman the National Book Awards Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. And we're both being banned. Some of you may think this is a good thing because you don't like my books or you don't care for Maus. But I guarantee that there are books you love on the banned lists too. That's why libraries and librarians fight for their rights to have all the books on the shelves and for your rights to read them. And it's why I support them.

Just reblogging because none of the threats to books and libraries have gone away. Mostly they've got worse. If you are capable of joining your Library Board or School Board do it...

“Roth’s job at Twitter was policing and preventing hate speech and harassment campaigns. He ran interference for Musk in the first weeks of Musk’s takeover, one has to figure unwisely. Now he is on the receiving end of just the sort of campaign he was charged with preventing, only now one lead by the owner of the platform he was once charged with policing. These campaigns were dangerous and vile in the past. When they’re led by a guy with 120 million followers who owns the platform it’s a different matter entirely. The entire online space now is a cage match between the ‘free speech’ advocates aligned with Trump and the ‘globalists’ and the pedophiles. And if you stick you’re head up you’re a pedophile too.”
