The most likely case scenario for the Burr-Hamilton duel is that Hammy fired at the tree behind Burr. Most of the witnesses said that Ham fired at Burr, but missed. This is odd, since it was commonly known that Hammy-boi was a great shot, one of the best under Washington’s lead, in fact, and Burr’s aim was laughable. Because of that, it’s believed that Hammy missed on purpose, because he didn’t want to shoot Burr.

Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr (and Brockholst Livingston) were on the defense for the first sensational murder case in the United States. At one point, Hamilton (or Burr, depending on the source) picked up a candle and went "Is this the man?". That story got so convoluted it now has a version where Hamilton picked up two candelabras from the table and yelled "Behold the murderer, gentlemen!" There's art of it and everything. It's amazing.
