TGCF donghua season 1 episode 1, that sequence merging with the ending credits, beautiful directing ❤️

• visual transitions, notably the breaking of each other’s falls and then the interlaced fingers showing the overlapping past and present

• the timing of the music with the scenes:

- ambient sounds and sounds of someone approaching melding with gentle, anticipatory music in the forest scene at the start

- sparks from the clashing swords just as the lyrics go “lightning struck”

- near the end, the Crown Prince looks sublime from the perspective of Honghong-er as his mask comes off, appropriately paired with a majestic yet gentle swoop in the tune. Then a rise in the tune—hope—in sync with Xie Lian saying “live for me” and something shining in Honghong-er’s eyes. Then a quick, decisive tune when Honghong-er makes up his mind and runs towards the ramshackle shrine

- the thump in sync with Hua Cheng’s boot stepping in the puddle

- the rise in the tune in sync with Hua Cheng raising his head

- I also like the music’s transition to the ending credits, where the combination has epic storytelling vibes, enhanced by first line of the lyrics during the ending credits: “I heard of Taicang Mountain, it’s difficult to reconstruct traces of its ancient kingdom” 😭

• gorgeous moving backgrounds in the ending credits hint of a legendary story by depicting various locations where it took place

• the umbrella tilted towards Xie Lian’s side (the following could very well be fake news, don’t quote me on this!!: saw a comment that said that the umbrella was initially drawn upright by a guy but a woman said make it slant towards Xie Lian. I didn’t know what I wanted but that woman did 😭)

• glorious song

In no particular order, these are some danmei fandom and danmei-related things that are not my cup of 🍵. By all means you do you and enjoy yourself! I just want to write my own feelings out.

1. Some fans’ drawings of Yue Qingyuan with caterpillar eyebrows. What a way to ruin a fine sect leader. He looks better with a thousand arrows in him than with those monstrosities marring his face.

2. The popular English ship name for Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan. Its clumsy inelegance and irrelevance to the novel irk me when I come across it. I mean no offence to whoever triggered it in the first place, but I do disagree with the tastes of people who fancy it enough to keep fanning the flames.

3. Wei Wuxian’s twinkification. How in the world do people look at Laozu and Wei Wuxian’s exploits in the book and go “no doubt that’s a twink”? I doubt the book gives such a strong impression of that; I suppose a large part of the craze stems from The Untamed and people who watched it before reading the book. Xiao Zhan is closer to the “delicate features”/feminine end of the good-looks spectrum than the Wei Wuxian in my head is, and he acts cuter in Wei Wuxian’s role than Wei Wuxian in the book is shown to act. Of course, there’s room for an actor’s interpretation, but when he adds things like pouting that aren’t mentioned in the book, his interpretation ends up clashing with the less adorable, bolder image the book built in my head.

4. All the danmei-adapted TV series that have been released/are pending release. 99% of the actors look nothing like the characters in my head. Then there are the issues of gender change and amplification of some relationships and diminishing of others.

5. Fans treating Lan Sizhui/Wen Yuan as Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji’s child. I don’t like how it erases his family from the picture, discarding them as if they weren’t important to him.

6. Exaggerated accusations of neglect, abuse, etc. directed at Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan, developed from the mere couple of interactions we saw them having with the kids in the book, despite no author’s descriptions of constant mistreatment (unlike, say, Shen Jiu’s tormenting of Luo Binghe).

7. The translation of Xueyu Tanhua as Crimson Rain Sought Flower. “Xue” is blood. “Sought” looks like the wrong tense; Hua Cheng is not the one being sought. So I’d use “reaching for” or “seeking” instead, for “tan”. Reaching for, or seeking, a flower in a rain of blood. (May be a metaphor for Hua Cheng chasing after Xie Lian, thrashing various parties in the process. Also, Tanhua refers to the person with the third highest score in the imperial exams, corresponding to San Lang, the third son.)

Saw a video on Xiaohongshu where this girl talked about having heterochromia: one black eye and one blue eye. Any eye colour besides black (and very dark brown) is incredibly rare among Han Chinese people. Apparently she got called a monster when she was a kid, but her life is much better now.

I thought, “Hua Cheng 😅”

Her eyes are really beautiful, kinda cat-eye look. The comments are full of funny compliments like

“If I were you I wouldn’t close my eyes even while sleeping”

“If I I had an eye like that I’d be so chuunibyou and believe I had some mysterious superpower”

“Isn’t that so cool, if I had heterochromia I’d immediately proclaim myself heaven’s chosen one”

“If I had an eye so beautiful I’d dig my eyeball out and flaunt it to the whole world”

My Dream Wedding—Musings

I saw this tweet today and my train of thought spiralled into some other dimension.

I guess the question doesn’t give enough consideration to those who don’t want to marry 😅 And quite a number of people won’t know how to answer it until later in life. I certainly wouldn’t have known. But now I have very realistic points of reference and expectations!

🧊🥒 “After the formalities are over, I will cry on my teacher before he pats my head and lets me do unspeakable things to him on our wedding night. (Unbeknownst to me, he gets 1,000 B-points for achieving this milestone.)”

🍁💐 “I gently hold the Crown Prince’s hand as I adjust my umbrella to shield him from a rain of blood, making sure that his wedding dress stays as pristine as his benevolence.”

💙🌶 “I will bring home the world’s most feared necromancer. He will ride a donkey and fight it for an apple. I will hold the reins.”

Thoughts veering off the path even further—instead of exchanging vows, these guys exchange more…creative…things:
