Maybe I missed something—maybe I'm in denial—but is it canon that Gon can't use nen anymore even after being healed? I was surprised to see a bunch of fic and posts saying that he can't. With how vague things were about the exact covenant he'd made, and all the comments about that not being power he could obtain simply by trading his life, I assumed either it would come up in other ways later, or was made void by Nanika's intervention. Sorry if this is a silly question!

Not a silly question, this is a great one!

Unfortunately I don’t have the Japanese scans for the scene in the manga that addresses this, and since it hasn’t been animated (YET….) I can’t listen to the audio to figure out what’s actually being said, but I’ll try my best to answer this and give the impression I have re: Gon’s nen abilities right now.

For those strictly following the 2011 series, it’s understandably not clear. Pitou says something to the affect of “he’s prepared to never use nen again” when Gon transforms himself. When Pitou says that, I’m sure most most of us interpreted that line as “Gon is planning to die”.

In one of the chapters shortly following where the anime leaves off, we get two scenes that address this. One is a brief panel of Gon realizing he can’t use his nen anymore, and the second is a phone call between Gon and Ging, where Ging says that Gon is now “normal”. (More specifically, Gon brings up that he can’t see his aura anymore, to which Ging replies “it’s still there, you just can’t see it because you’re normal now.”) Based on this, it seems that Gon’s covenant was “I’ll use everything I have,” meaning that he traded away his potential/natural talent in order to temporarily gain enough power to defeat Pitou.

So question I have is, did he just trade away his natural talent, meaning he still has the potential to re-learn nen (although he’s no longer a prodigy like Wing described), or did he give up all potential, meaning he can’t ever re-learn nen (obviously this would mean that re-learning nen for Gon would require some plot shenanigans).

I’m under the impression that it’s the first of those, meaning that Gon could re-learn nen, but it’s going to be incredibly difficult. Like, Zushi was also considered exceptionally talented by Wing, and look at how much he paled to Gon and Killua. And now Gon’s natural talent level is way beneath that.

I actually think this is a really awesome turn of events of Gon’s character. His #1 desire is to get stronger, and now he’s faced with this huge dilemma. I actually really love it, I love the idea of Gon facing the reality of being “normal”. In the manga, we see him return home to Whale Island, where he helps Mito with various chores around the house and then goes back to school work. This child just helped saved the world, nearly killed himself in the process, and now the challenge before him is to write an essay. I love it and I want to know what’s going on inside of Gon’s mind right now.
