discord was discussing a HZ3 headcanon/AU concept (which I believe @finrays started off) where instead of trying to catch up to Aloy's 14 years of experience as a hunter and all-around apex jock, Beta comes to rely more on her own resourcefulness and technical know-how and becomes known for her overridden machine companions (many of whom she's attached to and goes through the effort of upkeeping through repairs and bulking them up with her own tech, and they all have names because she's That kinda gal)

and I basically have not known peace since, because I was already working on a post-Singularity design for her and this just got my 'inventor-type blorbo' gears a-rattling somethin' fierce by giving me a direction to point it towards aklsdfjlksdf

Congratulations on your new human!

Humans are complex creatures with a variety of needs. They are not a suitable pet for most dragons, but for the right dragons who have time, patience, and proper resources, these animals can make absolutely incredible pets.

First of all, humans in general are a social species, so try to adopt at least two. Getting them from the same litter (or “family”) won’t always ensure that they get along, but they often roam in pairs or even in herds (or “friend groups”/”squads”) that are formed by the individuals’ decision to be together. If you have the space, adopting a herd can give you a chance to see their natural behaviors, such as singing or dancing in groups.

*Note: some humans are more solitary by nature. This is completely normal and you should check whether you have an introvert or an extrovert before introducing more humans to your household, as introverts can become stressed from having to interact with others without a proper introduction and a space to withdraw safely if needed.

Humans are omnivores, usually, though a few seem to be quite content with a vegetable-based diet. Again, this will be a matter of preference, so you should offer your human many options to choose from. Being a hunting/gathering species, you can turn their feeding into a game, giving them puzzle toys full of snacks or hiding them in odd places. They are curious and inquisitive, so rest assured that they will find it. You can also take them on hunts with you; they are smart and strategic and seem to never get tired! Just remember to give them a weapon; while dexterous with their forelimbs, their claws and teeth tend to be rather blunt and not too great during combat.

*Note: some humans cannot eat certain foods! Do not force your human to eat anything they don’t want to eat, even if it seems like they can eat it just fine.

Grooming-wise, humans are mostly bald except for their heads, where they grow beautiful manes in an array of colors. Discard the notion that the females should keep it long and the males should keep it short: this is an outdated belief and often does not correspond to what your human may want. As long as it’s clean and tangle-free, let the human do what it wants with its mane. They might surprise you with a fun braid style or even color it in an assortment of beautiful jewel tones!

*Note: Do supply your human with adequate clothing and bedding, as their lack of fur on their body will cause them to catch cold quite easily. Unlike us dragons, they cannot produce fire from their own bodies to keep warm, so they might cuddle up to you when it gets chilly outside. This is also bonding behavior, so don’t get a human if you’re not willing to let them on the bed with you.

Humans need stimulation, which luckily can be easily adapted to your lifestyle. If you’re more of a “stay-at-cave” dragon, some humans are happy to play riddles for hours and hours, or just read quietly from any books you have in your hoard. If you’re an active on-the-go dragon, find a human that likes to run and climb to keep you company during your travels. They also love creating, so giving them some clay or yarn will likely result in a new pot or scarf for your hoard.

Having a human can be a challenge, but they are wonderful, intelligent creatures with a fierce sense of loyalty who can make great companions for a responsible dragon.

I quit my job at a coffee shop a few months back, but the experience gave me inspiration for this story. And since I needed a short comic for a portfolio I thought it would be the perfect time to draw it out! I’m really, really proud of this one so I hope you enjoy reading it!

(Also no, I personally didn’t run into and supervillains, unfortunately)

I absolutely love this. It's freaking awesome. I've only known Devin for a minute, but he's the best villian, hands down. 10/10 would buy him a coffee.
