The young person's guide to conquering (and saving) the world

True, clothing has no inherent gender, but there are certain expectations, archaic as one may find them, that have been set for decades on the red carpet: The men typically wear suits and the women in dresses. Yes, we've seen women in menswear-inspired suiting (think Evan Rachel Wood at the 2017 Globes) over the years, and sure there was the time Denis O'hare wore platform heels at the 2016 Globes, but these are often anomalous situations.

Well, not anymore. Please welcome to the stage the 76th Golden Globe Awards, which took place on Sunday at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles. Hosted by Sandra Oh (who nabbed her second win!) and Andy Samberg, the red carpet fashion was anything but stuffy and expected. From The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss in menswear tailoring-inspired Dior to The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story’s Cody Fern wearing high-waisted trousers, a sheer panel top and Maison Margiela’s Tabi heel boots, the night was filled with sartorial splendor.

But do not consider deviation from tradition to be somehow inherently queer. Much like fashion has no gender, it also possesses no sexuality. It’s all in the delight of the person wearing it. Still, there was a fancy-free spirit among a number of celebrities, who avoided the expected in favor of something worth talking about.

So, let’s take a moment to marvel at those who used this moment to express their joy through the language of fashion.
