It’s safe to say that Meghan Markle has had quite the year. Last November, she and Prince Harry announced their engagement. In May, they got married in what was pretty much the wedding of the century. Now, the couple is expecting their first child and are currently in the middle of a 16-day global tour. Life as a royal is definitely high-profile, which explains why their security detail has to be on top of their game. Meghan and Harry’s new head of security just so happens to be a woman, which has sparked some questionable coverage.
As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made their way through Australia in recent days, the woman in question (whose name hasn’t been publicly reported for obvious security purposes) has found herself in the spotlight simply for not being a male security officer. The Daily Mail said that she was “armed and in killer heels,” producing a full feature on the woman that placed a large amount of emphasis on her appearance. That same report said that the female bodyguard “cut an unusually glamorous figure for a police officer, in black culottes and beige heels.”
Women serving on the security details of other members of the British Royal Family isn’t anything new. As The Daily Mail also reported, “most senior female members of the Royal Family have at least one woman close protection officer on their team.” Considering how common this arrangement is, the fascination with what Meghan and Harry’s new head of security was wearing — and with how she chose to style her hair — seems totally unnecessary. Let her do her job of keeping our favorite royals safe and leave it at that.
