- Miss Michigan took Sunday night’s Miss America 2019 platform to remind the audience that the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, is not yet resolved.
- “From a state with 84% of the U.S. fresh water, but none for its residents to drink, I am Miss Michigan, Emily Sioma,” she said as she introduced herself.
- Sioma’s comments are very much in line with the Miss America Organization’s announcement earlier this year that it was shifting the focus of the competition away from judging physical appearance to shining a light on social impact initiatives championed by the contestants.
