Hayley Kiyoko has already christened this year "#20GAYTEEN" and her prophetic naming appeared to come true on Monday, Aug. 20, when she basically took over the 2018 VMAs, performing her hit single "Curious" while also winning an MTV Video Music Award for PUSH Artist of the Year. (She was also nominated for Best New Artist.)
While accepting her award before the ceremony started, a very excited Hayley took time to dedicate the honor to queer women of color. She wrote, "This award validates any queer woman of color, that you can follow your dreams. And I love my fans. My fans gave this to us," she said. "We did it, #20GAYTEEN!"
Madonna was set to pay tribute to the late, great Aretha Franklin and announce the recipient of the prestigious Video of the Year award at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards.
Before handing over the Moon Person to Camila Cabello, though, Madonna dedicated five minutes to eulogizing Aretha. Theoretically, that is.
In reality, the only person to whom Madonna paid tribute during her speech was Madonna. She spent the entire few minutes telling the story of how she went from living in a “crackhouse” to performing at the first-ever VMAs in 1984.
Though she sprinkled in two or three references to her favorite Aretha Franklin songs, she neglected to explain the Queen of Soul’s impact or influence on her life, let alone on the world, choosing instead to describe her own triumphant rags-to-riches tale. Inspiring, sure, but not the point.
The Twitterverse was seemingly in agreement about the sheer inappropriateness of Madonna’s lengthy speech.

Kelsey McKinney is a culture critic whose second favorite holiday after Thanksgiving is the MTV Video Music Awards. In this piece, she explores why the VMAs are always primed for drama.
In 2018, making a spectacle at the MTV Video Music Awards is almost expected. Just take a look at some of the most jaw-dropping moments from over the years. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera both kissed Madonna in 2003. Kanye West began what became an almost decade-long feud when he interrupted Taylor Swift in 2009. Nicki Minaj called out Miley Cyrus during an award acceptance in 2015. Fifth Harmony made it known to the world that they were a four-member group and four members only at last year's show.
The VMAs are so consistently jam-packed with drama that magazines create lists not of the top 10 moments, but of the dozens. If a celebrity is going to diss an ex-boyfriend, find an enemy, or create a spectacle, they’ve historically chosen the VMAs to do it. But why?
“[The VMAs have] always branded themselves to be the most ‘risqué’ awards show,” Lindsey Weber, co-host of the celebrity podcast Who Weekly, told Teen Vogue. “They’ve always set themselves against the stuffy Oscars or Emmys, and took risks to encourage this crazy behavior.”
Risqué maybe needed to be the VMAs calling card in the ‘90s and ‘00s because the awards themselves never carried much industry clout. They are voted on by fans, the award itself shaped like the MTV mascot and not as prestigious as a Grammy or an Oscar, which are selected by an elite group of industry members. That lowers the stakes for performers; the VMAs show was more of a stage in front of thousands of fans rather than a competition for professional recognition.
MTV also embraced the IDGAF culture early on. When the network premiered as a cable channel built to show music videos in 1981, conservative cable operators refused to pick up the channel. "They thought that MTV was a bunch of coked-up rock and roll fiends, and they were right in a way," Craig Marks, who wrote an oral history of MTV, told NPR. But MTV became much more than that, becoming a place that made musicians’ careers and forever changed youth culture.
