Hannah Gluckstein, known as “Gluck”: British lesbian artist known for her evocative Modernist paintings, adopted the name “Gluck” because she thought the sex of a painter is irrelevant

Here’s a few more!

Gladys Bentley: Blues singer in 1920s Harlem. She performed at the famous gay speakeasies the Clam House and the Ubangi Club, sometimes backed by a chorus line of drag queens. She was openly gay in her early career and married a woman in 1931 in Atlantic City.

Marion Barbara ‘Joe’ Carstairs: Eccentric heiress and accomplished speed boat racer known for her tattoos, her butch presentation and her affairs with women including Greta Garbo, Tallulah Bankead, Marlene Dietrich and Oliver Wilde’s niece, Dorothy Wilde. After working with the Red Cross as an ambulance driver in World War I, she founded the car-hire and chauffeuring service featuring a women-only staff of drives and mechanics.

Anna May Wong: Considered to be the first Chinese American Hollywood movie star. Tired of being both typecast and being passed over for lead Asian character roles in favor of non-Asian actresses, Wong left Hollywood in 1928 for Europe and became a sensation, eventually performing on the stage, TV, and films on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Culper Spy Ring was an American spy network operating during the War of American Independence that provided George Washington with information on British troop movements. In November 1778, George Washington appointed Major Benjamin Tallmadge as director of military intelligence, charged with creating a spy ring in New York City, the site of British headquarters.
This network became known as the Culper Spy Ring and operated successfully in and around New York City for five years, during which time no spy was ever unmasked. Indeed even Washington was ignorant of the spies’ identities. Tallmadge’s informants consisted of friends he made at school on Long Island, including Austin Roe, Caleb Brewster, Abraham Woodhull, and Anna Strong.
Though Woodhull was Tallmadge’s chief agent, Robert Townsend was an important informant who posed as a Loyalist coffee-shop owner and merchant while working as a society journalist. As a reporter Townsend was able to obtain information from the British at society gatherings. (x)

It’s true!

Bass Reeves was so dedicated to the law, he even arrested his own son Bennie for the murder of his wife. Bennie was sentenced to life in prison. With over 3000 arrests, 14 kills, went his entire 32 year career in law enforcement without being shot once.

He was assigned to bring in the notorious female outlaw Belle Starr. Once she got wind who was after her she turned herself into the federal court.

Reeves was one of a few Marshalls who would venture into Indian territory *oklahoma*. After the age of 67 he retired in 1907. He enjoyed his short lived retirement as a police officer in Muskogee Oklahoma, his assigned beat had 0 crime reported until he died at the age of 71 of Bright’s disease.

He was one of the true gun slingers of the west.

I would expect nothing less from a man with such a magnificent mustache

I love the story of Bass Reeves!

One of his famous tactics was, if he was captured or in danger by a criminal he was hunting down, he would ask them to read a letter from his wife before they killed him. He used their distraction to free himself and get the upper hand.

He was also a freed slave. George Reeves, his owner and reason for his surname, took Bass with him to fight in the Civil War. However, George became violently angry after Bass beat him at a card game, and Bass was forced to fight him (or kill, on some accounts) in self defense.

After running away and entering Native American territory, Bass learned how to speak the languages of the ‘Five Civilized Tribes’ (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muskogee, Seminole). This part of his life is where he mastered marksmanship. He got married and had a family after the Emancipation Proclamation was declared, and then later became a Marshal, going on the adventures listed above (and many more… Another famous criminal that Bass captured was Bob Dozier.)

He was the very first black US Marshal. May we never forget him, as history would suffer to lose such an outstanding figure.

Always, always, always reblog Bass Reeves.

I plan on making a longer post about this but for tonight…

Reading about the actual Culpers is fascinating and beautiful. Robert and Abe had this incredibly trusting dynamic. There were points where Robert wouldn’t write and would only give verbal accounts and only if Abe came to the city and got them himself.

One of them would be nervous, write about quitting or express their fears of the ring. Then Abe would head over to New York or they’d meet each other somewhere and then they’d be reinvigorated!

Abe once visiting Robert on Christmas Day and needed to tell him something, something vital to the ring and just straight up forgot. Just spent Christmas with Robert.

Thank you for your time I have presented literally no evidence in this post but I’ll make an actual in depth one sometime in the future I promise
