I think the most unintentionally pretentious part of me is I genuinely forget that most people do not have a near-encyclopedic knowledge of mythology and folklore. I literally just assume most people know at least the name of every Greek god. My mom and I were watching the Banshees of Inisherin and at the start, she asked "Do you know what a banshee is?" and I was so stunned because it would never occur to me to ask that question because I would never assume the average person doesn't know what a banshee is. The average person knows what a banshee is right. You know what a banshee is right. You know the names of the greek gods right. You know that norse myth where loki fucked the horse right. Right. RIGHT

Ok, I've seen this sentiment before, but the amount of Kindle Unlimited ads I've been seeing is forcing me to repeat it-

Kindle Unlimited is offering two free months of unlimited ebooks. As a trial. Which will then become a paid subscription.

Your local library is offering unlimited ebooks all the time. Forever. No contracts, no predatory practices, no tracking of how long you spend on each particular page in the hopes that information about your habits can be sold for a profit.

Use your library. They want so badly to give you all of the things for free.

The Library Is

a Magical Place and You

Should Fucking Go There

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

I’ve been getting ebooks from the library (I have three local library systems that I’m entitled to get a card with, and I use all three) for a few years now, and I’m reading more and more widely, and discovering authors I then want to buy new releases from, and who’ve influenced my writing. Library ebook programs are great.

As prev said, find out if you're entitled to a card in more than one library system! I'm entitled to two (the second system only lets me have an e-membership where I can't check out physical stuff, but that's all I want from them anyway, and I didn't have to go in person to sign up). It increases the number of ebooks and audiobooks I can access, which is already pretty good. I believe the Libby app is used by most if not all public libraries in the US, and it works pretty well -- you have the choice to read your ebooks from a phone or tablet, or send it to a Kindle, or download a PDF.

In my area at least they also have free, unlimited access to digital versions of a lot of magazines -- The New Yorker, Nat Geo, Time, and many others, with no wait times or limits or due dates.

Libraries friggin rule.

Libraries are also likely to have a rough go of things over the next few years with funding cuts and censorship. These are free gathering and information centers for their communities, so please use them! Patronage and public interest will help keep them alive and operating!

I just saw your post about media that features the gods and I wanted to know if you’ve heard of the YA series Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini? I don’t know anyone else who’s read it and so I’m curious to see what others might think about it especially when it comes to the gods.

I actually never heard of that series! I’m def going to add it to my list! Thank you!

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts around social media talking about people hearing the call of Hekate, The Morrigan, and Lilith.

I’m not here to dissuade any of that, just want to remind my fellow pagans and witches that there are a plethora of other deities you can work with in regards to what we’re all currently going through and anticipated to go through.

As a Hellenic Polytheist here are some of my suggestions:

  • Aphrodite (especially her war side, yes Aphrodite has a war side)
  • Ares (THE feminist of the pantheon, I will die on that hill)
  • Artemis (protector of women and children, killer of dickheads, a witch, and a primal goddess. Don’t sleep on her!)
  • Athena (THE strategist. She’s going to lead you to the path of victory)
  • Dionysus (THE revolutionist. Dionysus is the destroyer of empires and harbinger of change. Especially in regard to women. Their maenads are lethal to men who try to oppress and suppress them)
  • Eris (MY GIRL! I mean this bitch started the Trojan War with an Apple. Do I need to say more??)
  • Demeter (Also a witch and single handedly brought two of the 3 kings to their knees and almost destroyed the entire world because she went against the patriarchy. This is the goddess you want to fight alongside of in this battle! Stop sleeping on her!)
  • Hera (Arguably the most terrifying deity in the entire pantheon. Even Zeus is terrified of her. She lead the Greeks to victory in the Trojan War using her rage, spite, and power. And she can do the same for us!)

There are of course other deities especially in other pantheons. And you can absolutely and should lean on the deities you already have relationships with. This is just a suggestion in case you would like to connect with a new deity for the collective work we are preparing to do.

As always, if you have any questions about the deities I listed don’t hesitate to ask! 💖

Happy hexing and dismantling oppressive systems, my darlings! 😘

Ares is the GOAT. 10/10.

We don't have many widely known stories of him that portray him in a good light because most of the stories we have can be traced back to Athens. Who were biased. A touch.

However, a Homeric hymn names him the father of Victory and ally of Justice, a Helper of Men.

One of his epithets is Γυναικοθιονας, or Feasted by Women, after a town was besieged and the invaders repelled by the women of the town. They feasted in Ares' name and the men didn't get to partake because they hadn't earned it.

My go to myth for Ares’ being the ultimate feminist is the one where he killed Poseidon’s son bc he tried to SA Ares’ daughter.

That’s such a big deal because you very rarely see abusive men (let alone those related to the gods) be punished for their crimes against women. And the fact that he was the son of Poseidon! One of the 3 kings and Ares did not give a fuck. He just wanted to defend and protect his daughter. Poseidon even brought him to court and Ares’ only defense was basically “he got what he deserved”

I fucking love Ares!! 🥰

You should be dissuading people who hear "the call" of lilith though. She's closed. Please tell me you know that she's closed

I’m not Jewish. I also have no knowledge of Lilith so I’m not going to speak on a topic I have no business speaking on.

@will-o-the-witch has talked at length about her if anyone is interested

fwiw, you were giving people alternatives to those deities. you know, persuading them to seek out other entities. not your job to admonish a hypothetical person.

I'm a little shocked that you've spent such a long time in online pagan spaces and amassed a pretty good community and *not* got the memo that lilith is closed?

So actually the last time I spoke on Lilith, saying she was closed I got called out by members of the Jewish community and told that her worship is a bit more complicated than just being closed.

So I made the decision to stay in my lane and no longer speak on Lilith or other deities I have no knowledge of.

I am a Hellenic Polytheist. This is a Hellenic Polytheist centered blog. My post was focused on the Hellenic Pantheon and I was giving “open” options to people.

If you take issue with my boundaries then I politely ask you to unfollow and/or block me.

I know I’ve asked this before but it was so long ago that I think it couldn’t hurt to ask again!

Are there any specific pieces of media (can be books, tv shows, movies, etc) that feature the gods that you would be interested in me reviewing and talking about??

I’m working on a few right now (yes Tea With the Gods is making a come back!) and making a list for what to possibly review in the future. So id love your input!

Also if you have any suggestions on other topics to cover def feel free to let me know! Thanks so much, my loves! 💖

Resharing this bc I have a bunch of new followers! Let me know what topics you’d be interested in my discussing! 👍🏻

I've seen other people post about this, but please remember not to blame the gods for the less than savory results of this election. Instead go to them for comfort and solace, and I'm sure they will have our backs during this trying time. I felt their presence with me alot today. May the gods be with you! 💙

I'm already seeing advice from people in the US to purchase queer books and other banned or "controversial" books on paper as a way to combat the wave of government censorship that is coming. While this is a good idea (it is! absolutely!), it's not accessible to everyone, and truly, we're not going to be able to consumerism our way out of this one.

If you can buy the books, do. Whether you can buy the books or not, borrow them from your library.

Borrow the paper versions. Borrow the ebook or audiobook versions. Request the titles you want that your library doesn't have. The more a title circulates or is requested, the better librarians are going to be able to defend keeping it if and when it's ever challenged.

Use libraries like @queerliblib too. The more members they have, the better they'll be able to fundraise.

Your community resources depend on you using them. Borrow the books before they go away.

InB4: Piracy is not the solution here. We're trying to keep community resources available, not make sure individual people can read individual books. Different problems.

The books are still available. Borrowing them from your library and returning them on time and in good condition will help keep them that way.
