Rereading the canon in English gives me surprises. The scene in “A Case of Identity” when Holmes imagines he flies out the window with Watson, for example, is a little duller in French (they don’t take each other’s hands and the description is really short)

So, hand in hand over london-

Sigh. Since this article’s excerpts from the suit highlight Holmes’ attitude to (and alleged scorn for) women, here are some excerpts from early stories:

“The law cannot, as you say, touch you,” said Holmes, unlocking and throwing open the door, “yet there never was a man who deserved punishment more. If the young lady has a brother or a friend, he ought to lay a whip across your shoulders. By Jove!” he continued, flushing up at the sight of the bitter sneer upon the man’s face, “it is not part of my duties to my client, but here’s a hunting crop handy...” (IDEN)
Her features and figure were those of a woman of thirty, but her hair was shot with premature grey, and her expression was weary and haggard. Sherlock Holmes ran her over with one of his quick, all-comprehensive glances.
“You must not fear,” said he soothingly, bending forward and patting her forearm. “We shall soon set matters right, I have no doubt.” (SPEC)
“Well, Miss Hunter, if your mind is made up, that settles the question,” said Holmes, smiling.
“But you would not advise me to refuse?”
“I confess that it is not the situation which I should like to see a sister of mine apply for.” (COPP)

And there is also the case of NOBL, in which, having worked out that a young bride’s disappearance was entirely voluntary, he responds by inviting her and his client to supper.

I was invited by Reedsy to draw a new cover for one of the Sherlock Holmes stories. 10/14 this year is the 125th anniversary of the publication of Sherlock Holmes, and 12 designers / Illustrators make new book covers for different short stories to celebrate. I tried a new approach, inspired by Elly Mackay’s beautiful papercut artworks, I played with the blur and the light with the two mysterious male characters. If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generation, and leading to the most outré results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.” - Sherlock Holmes
