So about my upcoming webcomic Athena's Champions

As some of you might know I'm working on a webcomic about Odyssues and Diomedes. It will mainly focus on the Trojan war, I'm going to try to reconstruct the Trojan War cycle with the bits and pieces that are available, the parts in between I'll just make up myself and hope it still feels somewhat accurate.

It's not going very fast so for the people that are interested, please be patient. The reason why it's not going very fast is because I keep changing the chapters, because I want it to be something I'll be proud of. Especially the first chapter has been rewritten at least 15 times. On top of that I'm not a big fan of the webcomic format, especially the white spaces really annoy me, so I wanted to make some special pannels with decoration around it, and I also want it to be decently colored. So there's a lot of work that goes into making this, so it will take some time. The problem I had with rewriting (and redrawing) the first chapter over and over again have been passed down to the next chapters. I had rough sketches for the next two chapters completely drawn out with text, but I decided that I don't like them anymore and I'm working on new ones.

With this post I wanted to tell you what you could expect from this webcomic. Once I have finished the 6 first chapters, I'll put them online (don't know where yet, if anyone has recommendations feel free to share) and then it will probably take a while to make the other chapters. The first 6 chapters will be:

Chapter 1: Embassy to Troy

Chapter 2: Gathering allies: Crete

Chapter 3: Gathering allies: Skyros (might be split into two chapters)

Chapter 4: Egypt

Chapter 5: Council in Argos

Chapter 6: Home (might also besplit into 2 chapters, or even more, this is supposed to show the home context of the heroes and their families, I want to pay extra attention to this, since the webcomic focuses mainly on the war endeavors of the men, their families will get less attention, so I think this is important)

The scripts of these chapters have somewhat been written down (I don't like to work with tight scripts, they stress me out). After this there will be the first council at Aulis, the failed mission to Mysia and then again a home depiction. After that the real war starts.

It's my intention to also make a sequel encluding what happens in the Odyssey, the travels of Diomedes and the Aeneid, but judging from the current pace I have in making these, I assume this will be as fast as Odysseus trying to reach home. I hope not, but I've been working on this for 3 years now and I kept changing everything, so it's actually not that unrealistic. Let's hope it's faster though.

Socrates design for my (slightly surreal/psychedelic) comic based on Plato's "Phaedo" that I'm working on.

Eventually I'll work on his tattoos properly.

Friendly reminder to not punish yourself for creating.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by this?

I have a tendency to beat myself up whenever something I make doesn’t meet my expectations (which is always). The result is that finishing something = bad feelings: I am effectively punishing myself for having created something. The natural reaction to this punishment is an aversion to creation, meaning that my perfectionism is harming me, not only by causing me to despise what I do make and by impeding the creative process, but by attacking even my desire to create.

The Laughing Man - Confessions of a Murderer (GDR, 1966) Posing as West German journalists, East German documentary filmmakers Heynowski and Scheumann pay a visit to the notorious Nazi-turned-mercenary Siegfried “Kongo” Müller, pump him with booze, and get him to talk. Müller fought in Congo’s civil war in the 1960s, and the more Pernod he imbibes, the more fascinating this interview becomes. He asserts that blacks are no better than animals and shares his dream of enlisting in the U.S. Army to fight communism in Vietnam and beyond. He flaunts his military paraphernalia, including the Iron Cross he was awarded in Germany in 1945, and proceeds to deny his earlier statements about civil killings, the ethics of war, and the defense of Western libertarian values. This documentary tour-de-force is interspersed with pictures of Müller and his comrades proudly posing with severed skulls, and it touches on other Nazis who are active in Africa as well as American world dominance.

samurai story: our era is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, and all i can do is stay true to my ideals, even to my death

wild west story: our era is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, and all i can do is stay true to my ideals, even to my death

gangster story: our era is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, and all i can do is stay true to my ideals, even to my death

golden age of piracy story: our era is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, and all i can do is stay true to my ideals, even to my death

wuxia story: i sure hope this godawful shitty era becomes a thing of the past soon so i can really get cracking on my ideals of JUSTICE, BENEVOLENCE, FILIAL PIETY, KICKING ASS, and FUCKING FOREVER

i think it’s interesting that generally the stories that use this narrative do it from a perspective of its subculture’s inevitable assimilation into the capitalist white hegemony with the advancement of the imperial project, whether it’s samurai whose country is synching with western modernity to the detriment of their own traditions, cowboys and buccaneers who lived in the vanguard of colonialism and now must answer to the capitalism they paved the way for, or gangsters who once were irishmen working for other irishmen and now are white men working for white men. but assimilation was never even on the table as europe and america interacted with china—in the (relatively few) wuxia stories dealing with 19-20th century colonialism, they aren’t fighting to keep their culture, but to resist subjugation, and it’s framed not just as a battle that must be fought but as one that must be won

Haunted by how it was apparently the judgment of the time (Late Antiquity) that Pisander of Laranda's* humongous work of 60 books that covered "all" of the mythic era and especially the epic cycles contained in the Epic Cycle had superseded the need for the original Epic Cycle.

And do we have that?

Do we have either the original or the later works?

No!!!!

(*I THINK that's the guy that was named but as I can't quite remember or where I read it, take it with a pinch of salt lol)

greetings!

kindly requesting some background info and perhaps some linguistic breakdowns on the compound names & epithets of the greek gods.

So far ive come across a fair few (like areia and kronides for aphrodite and zeus respectively) and wondered if theyre tied to certain myths, are markers of where the god is in theogony, or are as simple as greek honorifics.

tysm and have a wonderful day :D

Hello hello!

Oh my this is an amazing question but also so damn extensive! Hahaha because there are countless epithets given to the gods depending on their cult and worship, their attributes or relations even their appearance at times (ex. Κυανοχαίτης Ποσειδών aka "dark/blue haired Poseidon", or Γλαυκόφθαλμη Αθηνά aka "Athena with the blue/gray/bright eyes" or "eyes like an owl")! Only Zeus has a bunch of them! Much more the others! However I will try my best to scrap the surface of their names and epithets here.

For starters the gods, just like the humans in poems and such, bear the names of their heritage or parenthood. So, just like we have let's say Ατρείδης Αγαμέμνων (Atreides Agamemnon) aka "Agamemnon son of Atreus", we have also Κρονίδης Ζευς Kroneides Zeus "Zeus, son of Cronos" [Since whenever you see the ending -ίδης (-ides) at the end of a name means "son of" ]

They also might have an epithet depending on the area they are being worshipped or linked to their birth or residing, for example Κυπρία Cyprian, an epithet of Aphrodite to indicate her birthplace in Cyprus or even Κυθέρεια "From Kythera" for her other elleged birthplace, Kythera.

Gods also bear as epithets names that are linked to the lands they have their temples or sanctuaries in for example Ολύμπιος/α (Olymbios/a)= Of Olympus, Olympic, Πελάσγιος (Pelasgios) [Zeus]= Of the Pelasgic tribe, etc or Delphic (the one in Delphi) etc.

There are so many so I am not sure if I can touch them all but I will sure try! I am sorry if this message is long.

You know, it’s very interesting to me that Zeus before Hera (according to Hesiod, I think) had five wives, who bore him only daughters. And he... Never did anything bad to them for this? (Expect Metis. He was awful with Metis of course)

I know that's the bare minimum, but it's very interesting to me, considering that in the real world, some ruler would have slandered you as a witch or sent you to a monastery for not being able to bear sons (cough, Henry VIII, cough). But Zeus never did that. He divorced his wives, let them stay on Olympus with all the privileges, and took care of his daughters. It's, um... Sweet, in a way?

Like yeah, he is still made a lot of bad decisions, but this man have at least SOME dignity in him.

@katerinaaqu (you know more about this than me)

In art and literature, Pegasus (and by extension Chrysaor) was born from Medusa’s head fully formed, but wouldn’t it be funny if Pegasus and Chrysaor were born as babies so Perseus and Athena had to take some accountability for orphaning their monstrous cousins? Idk I just thought this would be amusing.

Also in my retelling, Perseus sneaks up on Medusa while she’s asleep and her sisters aren’t home, but he slips up and Medusa wakes up and they fought.

So let's cry a bit with some Teucer mentions. "Teucer" is probably latinized for "Teukros" (read: Tèfkros) in Greek.

And it is also interesting given that "Teukros" basically speaks on his bloodline. That he comes from a Trojan line. I do hear some versions come from Hitite Tarḫunt which leads to the greek word "τεύκτωρ" from the word that means "to build" but nothing concrete.

We also see the association with the tribes that resided in Troy at that time. Either way I find it so intriguing that the name of this hero that was also known for his double roots and double lineage or often linked to the tradition that he was illegitimate son has a name that speaks "foreigner"! The dude has a name that speaks up for him having non-greek origins and I am not okay to think about it! (Yes Sophocles I remember you!)

The Assosiation of Odysseus with the Ram (an Odyssey and Iliad Analysis on Odysseus and Hermes)

Is there no one gonna talk on the fact that Odysseus escapes Polyphemus under a ram? A RAM! The ram is one of the sacred animals of HERMES! Also the association of Odysseus with the ram seems to be blatant and I am surprised no one talks of it! Hermes! The god that is his lineage and also arguably the one that helped him without conditions in his trip...is always there!

Hermes is also called Κριοφορος (Kriophoros)= ram-bearer, due to myths that involve him carry a ram around his back

Also in ancient art, Hermes is also depicted riding a ram!

Odysseus escapes Polyphemus and certain death UNDER a ram, when Hermes, the sender of souls to the underworld is depicted ON a ram! What is more the ram as black of color, a color associated to death and mourning as well as Hermes is associated with death!

Hermes is mentioned as "bearer of rams" and yet a lamb now bears Odysseus under it out of the cave!

Of course the most infamous association of Odysseus with a ram is that he is also compared to one! Infamously in the Iliad:

Secondly, the old man upon seeing Odysseus he asked: "Tell me now, dear child, who is that one. He is a head shorter than Agamemnon the son of Atreus but he seems to me wider in his shoulders and his chest, his arms he has them placed upon the well-graised earth. He seems to me like a thick-haired ram the way he prances through the lines of men as if they are a flock of white lambs"

(Translation by me)

As mentioned yesterday: the drawing of Odysseus, Ctimene and Eumaeus as kids, with Hermes disguised as a tortoise, introducing himself as their great-grandfather and you know Eumaeus is also there.

When I was drawing Diomedes as a kid, this image suddenly popped up in my head. I didn't finish or render any of the background, because when I was starting I thought the drawing looked worse. I actually think the white makes it look more dramatic.

One of my friends really likes this drawing. He joked that maybe Hermes himself gave me some divine inspiration for this, which I personally think would be one of the funniest things ever. Other gods: "Draw me as the godly god I am" and Hermes would just be like "Draw me as a tortoise".

Litle Diomedes. I based his appearance on my designs for his older self. I added some beads in his hair at the top, because I thought it would be fitting for Diomedes to have some sort of oath. Like the beads would cover a little braid in which he has braided part of his father's hair, which he will cut off and sacrifice to the gods once he has avenged his father. I thought it would be a nice little detail.

I have another drawing I made of Odysseus as a boy (together with Ctimene and Eumaeus), but I'll post that one tomorrow.
