Borderlands, to put it simply, is a series of games that invented the genre of games known as “looter shooters”. Games that give players guns and they’re rewarded with guns, shinies and more guns.
Without the sense of humor it has (which I’ll get to in a second), the series itself would be (nearly) Naked Lunch levels of grim and depressing. You’re on a planet full of animals that need to kill you, nice-ish people that pay you to kill animals and/other people, and mentally unstable deviants who delight in killing people as well as themselves and their friends!
Thankfully, the sense of humor makes this series an absolute joy (even if a good portion of it relies on referential humor), giving us smoking hot but strong female protagonists like Lilith, Ellie & Mad Moxxi, awesome villains like Handsome Jack and the Calypso twins, non-token/one dimensional LGBT characters like Wainwright Jacobs and Alistair Hammerlock (both of whom are a couple and awesome as hell), and lovable characters like Shooty McFace who wants you to shoot him in the face and graciously thanks you for it before he dies.
In conclusion, Borderlands is a series of games that has a bit of everything for those with an open mind!
You want blood and gore? They got over a billion guns that all do wacky shit like a shotgun that fires whole swarms of bullets that break through the walls of reality to flank and eviscerate your targets. You want comedy? Talk to my pal Shooty, and his friend the Singing Psycho who does Mercenary Day Charols (their version of Christmas). You want grim existence, angst, and dark storytelling? Handsome Jack has got a special deal for you! You want more characters to daydream about marrying or to make you either double down on and/or question your sexuality? They have such sights to show you~

Honestly this is the only game series I’ve played that’s made me feel like a gore whore and a regular one
