Gentle reminder that your friendly neighborhood turian can curl up in a tiny ball when necessary. They don't have to stand around looking suave and menacing allllll the time.
so. I read things.
apparently patrick weekes confirmed what a turian penis looks like at havencon this year.
they look like ducks down there. a duck penis is corkscrew-shaped.
No.

i can’t help but think they’re clumsy like baby birds
pour vous @tarysande of Rose and Tyrra
I always thought Rose of this shortie and Tyrra as a beanstalk and a pushover when it comes to Rose and eccentricities
...confirmed: Rose is totally the shortie and Tyrra the beanstalk pushover.
Aelwen, thank you SO much. They are adorable. I am putting them on my wall.

I had to look away several times while drawing this b/c the cuteness was actually embarrassing me
If you don't mind me asking.... What is Skota? Turian cuisine is literally impossible to write about, how did you pull it off? Huge fan btw c:
Oh gosh, thanks :)
Um, I imagine skota to be kind of like a curried meat dish, where the blend of spices is what gives it its distinctive flavor, and perhaps texture is added via native vegetables? Like raptors or cats, I think it’s probably likely turians are obligate carnivores, but my personal headcanon is that they are able to eat other foods for flavor or texture (not unlike how my cat will go wild for cheese?). Turian teeth seem to indicate that they probably rely heavily on meat, so I guess when I imagined their cuisine, I imagined a lot of different spices and flavors, where the recipes become a kind of tradition passed down from person to person, and are valued because of it (because that sort of seemed like it might exist in a society that also came up with the turian concept of Spirits?).
I mean, you have examples that seem to indicate some non-meat consumption, like the turian chocolate Dr. Michel gives Garrus (and that Garrus seems able to share this with Tali, even though quarians are vegan/vegetarian? because that’s how the Liveships work—I think that might’ve been in one of the books?). You’ve got the turian and quarian couple in ME2 in Aethyta’s bar and that turian says something like at least he and she can share the same food, which makes them more compatible than she and the human she’s been griping about. Obviously the dextro thing is one aspect, but the whole vegetarian/carnivore thing is another consideration? (ETA: yeah, as janedoodles pointed out, I think quarians are vegan, but then it’s even weirder that there might be any food overlap at all with turians, so *shrug SHRUG* what is in that chocolate who knows, who knows. Why am I thinking about this at 12:30 in the morning instead of sleeping?! ;D)((ETA2: surrealsadi now points out that somewhere in the codices that quarians are vegetarian because of resources on the Flotilla, but eat meat paste when they can get it. Which... actually, I feel like I must've read that, too; it seems very familiar.))
But essentially I just invented something because I needed it. The game doesn’t give many details, so I just kinda ran with a couple of observations and tried to make it sound like something plausible. So… I’m glad it did?
Do turian kids lose parts of their body like how humans lose teeth as they get older because if they do somebody better freak out when it happens to Tyrra GODDAMNIT I LOVE THIS AU
Oh dear, thinking about alien kids
(My favorite little-turian headcanon is one servantofclio found somewhere that posited baby turians have, like, vestigial feathers when they’re born. Little wee fluffy turian babies! I don’t even care if it’s not true. Until canon proves otherwise, I will keep that image in my head to content me when I’m feeling sad. It's right up there with turian parents keeping tiny babies in their cowls. :D)
…Honestly, I think most creatures with teeth end up losing and replacing them as they get older, but it seemed like an amusing little difference. So. *biology handwave*
I thought a little about turian childhood/youth/etc back when I was writing wee Garrus and wee Solana in Just Like Old Times, but I never did jump headfirst into the details. So, um, have a handful of headcanon?
I figure turian kids have to be a little more flexible than their parents in terms of plating and the like because they’re growing. Since evidently the plating has evolved as a form of protection on Palaven, it seems like kids must be kept a bit insulated from a dangerous environment while that growing’s going on. Maybe not quite as insulated as quarian kids, but, for example, in Garrus’ comic, he’s definitely small-turian-shaped, and also pretty well-covered by significant amounts of clothing (not unlike all the adult turians we see in-game).
In my mind, the inherent danger of the outside environment, especially when children are small and growing, means a lot of family life happens indoors, where it’s safer and more protected, leading to close family units, close communities, and the building blocks that eventually expand outward to encompass what’s essentially the foundation of the Hierarchy and turian society. Extrapolating from how little we know, it seems safe to imagine that turian children have pretty structured upbringings? I mean, all that honor and duty and responsibility probably gets reinforced from a young age, and probably in more ways than just “do the dishes, it’s your duty” or “be nice to your sister, it’s your responsibility.” (“Bad” turian or not, I think this is where Shepard and Garrus would probably end up having to have conversations about parenting. I mean, they’d basically be winging it and making things up as they go along and trying to marry the rigidity of the turian structure to the wanderlust-individuality of their different childhoods. The day Garrus opens his mouth and some stern good-turian line of his dad's falls out? Ha.)
Whoops, all of this has gone off topic somewhat. Essentially, I’m not sure if there’s an actual physical “losing” of something like Rose lost her tooth, but I’m sure there’s a whole world of wow, that’s different they’d have to explore as the girls got older? Tyrra was already learning to be a good turian, and navigating a world different than the one she remembers from her very young years will be something of a challenge.
...um, what we've learned here is that obviously I’ve spent more time thinking of the psychology of Growing Up Turian, rather than the biology. ;D

A million thanks to my artist: Minque, who makes beautiful pictures and my beta janiemcpants, without whom this story would be one hot mess.
Oh, man, so I almost missed this because somehow the masterpost never showed up on the MEBB tumblr? And I'm really glad I DIDN'T miss it, because it's such a cool look at the world outside Shepard's sphere, full of great characters and some lovely world-building. I really enjoyed it!
"My father’s a C-Sec man, to the bone. ‘Do things right or don’t do them at all’, he says."
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS THIS IS PERRRRRRRFFEEEECCCTTTTT
I will neither confirm nor deny that I just squeaked out loud
Finished! Yeah! I’m still unsatisfied, but at least it was a tryout u-u
The lovely w0rdinista's OC, Tyrrana. Oh man, how much do I love drawing lady turians. Thank you ever so much for another commission, ‘Nista! :D
(Commissions are still open and portraits like this one are still only $10 until August 31st. Please drop me a line if you’d like one!)
Seriously, if you don't love Tyrrana, we basically can't be friends.
(And if you don't know Tyrrana, you can read about her in w0rdinista's Thena Shepard alphabet Tales Plainly Told. And you totally should. Because it's great.)
