The thing about watching the cruise musical is that it makes me long for the day when we get the official Broadway production. Alan and Glenn will write new songs to fill in, not reuse the ones from the cruise.

Some day, in the not-too-distant future, we're going to have even more original Tangled content, we're going to have new voices for Rapunzel and Eugene, and I'm not lying, I will cry.

Did we ever get the lyrics for the original song that was made for Cass's solo before they reworked it to Waiting in the Wings?

Yes! The song was called Lady In Waiting:

I guess I'm a lady in waiting 'Cause waiting is all that I do I'm always the one Whose big day in the sun Just happens to never come through

The girl no one needs to pay heed to Whose name no one bothers to learn Holding my tongue Overlooked and unsung Just patiently waiting my turn

Well, I'm tired of life in the shadows Of hiding my light in a drawer I'm done masquerading-- This lady is waiting for more

Waiting for action! Waiting for glory! Waiting for just one chance to star in my own story Tired of dreaming Ready to wake I wonder, how much longer will it take?

Like so many ladies in waiting My patience has worn a bit thin I've had it to here With my back-seat career It's time for MY life to begin

And to all of the laughers and doubters Who sneer so contemptuously Well, soon they'll all know What I knew long ago: The world has been waiting for me!

Waiting for passion! Waiting for feeling! Waiting for someone who can smash that stained-glass ceiling! I know I'm ready Sure as can be I may have waited before But this lady's waiting no more! The time has come to seize me fate-- I'll show them all, just wait... And see!

Hi Bex,

Would you maybe know or agree if a parallel was made/ or a musical motif had been used "Set yourself free" and "Crossing the line" musically? I've looked into this to see if there was anyone talking about it or a confirmation, but here's what I noticed:

Use of guitar in both songs, with a strum at the beginning

And these sections

"Now the choice is yours and now life waits beyond the doors" / "Locked inside a tower, forced to live a life youve barely known"

and

"I've never got the chances you were given, you don't know how much I've been denied, well I'm not being patient anymore"/ "A line between the winners and the losers, a line between the chosen and the rest"

I'm not sure if you know anything about music, but I was wondering if you found the songs similar. I also looked at music sites such which say they have the same tuning for guitar! And the while I couldn't find a sheet for set yourself free I think they shared some of the similar aspects based on what I saw.

What do you think? I also would think they are connected thematically with their feelings at the very least. Thank you!

I've never heard any sort of confirmation about this, even when Glenn Slater was giving random facts and answering questions about the songs in the movie and series for the movie's 10th anniversary. All I can say for sure is that all the songs were written by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, so of course there is going to be similarities in the instrumentation between two songs with similar moods that were written for the same show.

How did the show end up with such good songs? Like seriously, its the best out of any show I have watched, I was convinced after Nothing left to lose. Are most disney shows like this?

Because the songs were written by the superstar team that wrote the songs for the movie: Alan Menken and Glenn Slater.

Alan Menken is also responsible for the songs from such Disney movies as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Best, Newsies, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Enchanted, and Ralph Breaks the Internet, as well as many, many other things, Disney and not-Disney.

Glenn Slater has worked with Alan on several projects, like Home On the Range, Galavant, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and The Little Mermaid Live!

Not to mention, they have professional singers contributing their voices to most of the songs (definitely not all of them, though).

Because of their close collaboration on so many projects, not only do they understand each other, they also understand the range and skills of many of the singers they were writing songs for. When Glenn answered questions about Tangled songs for the movie's 10th anniversary, he mentioned that knowing Zachary Levi's voice made it easy to write songs for him to sing. Similarly, Alan has worked with Jeremy Jordan (Newsies: the Musical) and James Monroe Iglehart (Aladdin: the Musical) before. I don't know if either of them had ever worked specifically with Eden Espinosa before Tangled: the Series, but they clearly understood her range and voice type, too, since "Waiting In the Wings" was the only song from Tangled: the Series to win an Emmy.

I can't speak for other Disney shows, because there's a lot I haven't seen, though I do know they sometimes get top performers (like Mandy, Eden and James, who have all been in more than one Disney series).

But the series set out to have amazing songs, right from the get-go. That was one of the things they definitely wanted to accomplish when making the series, which is why they got the movie's composers and lyricist back for the series.

I keep hearing about a full version of Crossing the Line but have never seen it or it's lyrics. Is there a link for it or can it be found on social media? Was that full version ever recorded?

Avatar

The full version was never recorded, but Glenn Slater (the lyricist) released the full lyrics on Twitter.

THERE’S A LINE BETWEEN THE WINNERS AND THE LOSERS. THERE’S A LINE BETWEEN THE CHOSEN AND THE REST. AND I’VE DONE THE BEST I COULD, BUT I’VE ALWAYS KNOWN JUST WHERE WE STOOD– ME HERE WITH THE LUCKLESS YOU THERE WITH THE BLESSED.

AND THAT LINE BETWEEN THE BEGGARS AND THE CHOOSERS IS A LINE YOU NEVER LET ME QUITE IGNORE. HOW I’VE TRIED TO JUMP THAT GREAT DIVIDE! BUT I NEVER GOT THE CHANCES YOU WERE GIVEN. YOU DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH I’VE BEEN DENIED– WELL, I’M NOT BEING PATIENT ANY MORE–

I’M CROSSING THE LINE! SO GET OUT OF MY WAY, ‘CAUSE I’M NOT GONNA PLAY BY YOUR RULES. IT’S MY TIME TO SHINE, I DON’T NEED YOUR OK– AND I’M DONE BEING ONE OF THE FOOLS– I’M CROSSING THAT LINE.

THERE ARE LINES THAT I’VE BEEN WAITING IN FOREVER– THERE ARE LINES I’VE ALWAYS FELT I HAD TO TOE. SOME WERE BLURRY, SOME UNSEEN, SOME I’VE HAD TO LEARN TO READ BETWEEN– SO MANY BOUND'RIES, FAR MORE THAN YOU KNOW!

BUT THE LINE YOU THINK CONNECTS US BOTH TOGETHER? THAT’S A LINE THAT I’M NOT FALLING FOR AGAIN. ‘CAUSE THIS TIME, MY EYES ARE OPEN WIDE– I’VE BEEN TRAPPED BY LINES YOU NEVER HAD TO LIVE IN. YOU WERE NEVER REALLY ON MY SIDE, SO I’M DOING WHAT I SHOULD HAVE, WAY BACK WHEN–

I’M CROSSING THE LINE! AND I’M DONE HOLDING BACK, SO LOOK OUT, CLEAR THE TRACK, IT’S MY TURN! I’M TAKING WHAT’S MINE EV’RY DROP, EV’RY SMIDGE, IF I’M BURNING A BRIDGE, LET IT BURN! BUT I’M CROSSING THE LINE… AS FOR US, IF WE’RE OVER, THAT’S FINE… I’M CROSSING THE LINE.

Alan's post was March 4, 2020 (in the wake of the series finale). (Thanks for finding the tweet, Sea!) Glenn's was November 24, 2020 (in response to 10th Anniversary questions).

I reblogged Glenn's post and said he was blowing my mind, and that it reminded me of Alan's vague comment, and he liked it.

Just remembering that in 2020, both Alan Menken and Glenn Slater vaguely eluded to a potential Broadway version of Tangled...

Do you know how a tv series based on a movie is greenlit? Like with Tangled the series, were the creators on the Tangled film team?

From what I understand, Disney approached Chris Sonnenburg and Shane Prigmore (who was promoted to VP of Creative Affairs for WDTVA before the show was fully developed, and Ben Balistreri was brought onboard) to do a series for Tangled, because they wanted one done. Shane and Chris developed the story and got as many people who worked on the film as they could on the series - the voice actors, obviously, but also Glen and Claire Keane to help with visual development, Alan Menken, Glenn Slater and Kevin Kliesch to do the songs and music, and as many other musicians, board artists, crew members, etc as they could get their hands on. They even got Roy Conli, the movie's producer, to back them up in getting Disney to let them knock down the tower! (Though he didn't actually work on the show at all.) However, Byron Howard and Nathan Greno have nothing to do with the series (other than the one comic book cover that Nathan did art for).

Just for fun (and sorry if you’ve been asked this before), but do you think Tangled has a good shot at an Emmys win? ‘Cause it’d be great to have one last awards hurrah for the show, don’t you think?

Well, let's see what it's up against, shall we?:

  • “Monster” - Adventure Time: Distant Lands OBSIDIAN
  • “Nothing Left To Lose” - Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure
  • “Something in the Air” - Elena of Avalor
  • “Such a Beautiful Day” - Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe
  • “Suffragette Song” - Animaniacs

I'm not going to pretend that I know all of these songs (or even half of them), but I've heard "Suffragette Song," and I know the music style in both P&F and Elena... so, yeah! I'd say "Nothing Left to Lose" has a decent shot!

As for Kevin Kliesch's nomination for the score...? He's been nominated for the score every year for at least one award (usually the Annies), and he's only won once, in 2017, for the BMI TV Music Awards. So I hope he wins, but historically he keeps not winning despite his annual nomination.

The Daytime Emmy Awards Children’s Programming and Animation ceremony will be presented in a stand-alone show streaming on the Emmy® OTT platform on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at 8p.m ET.

Hi. Was ‘Through It All’ based on the song ‘Alouette Gentille Alouette? Because they sound very similar. Thanks

I sincerely doubt it.

If you've ever listened the the soundtrack to Galavant (which was also written by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater), there's a similarity to "Today We Rise". It's just they're style of "rally the troops" marching song.

I also completely disagree with you about it resembling "Alouette".
