Someone asked a question about what you would change from the movie and one of them was to give Rapunzel a crossbow. Was Rapunzel supposed to get a crossbow? Some of the toy merch for the series had a floral bow and arrow set that NEVER appeared in the show either. Was Rapunzel learning archery a scrapped concept?

Oh, my darling, my love. I will be glad to show you.

Rapunzel with a crossbow comes from the pre-Eugene version of the movie. The one being directed by Glen Keane, with Bastion as the male lead.

So, yes, there was a point in this movie's production where Rapunzel defended the tower with a crossbow rather than a frying pan.

And then, as you mention, there's merch from the series of a carved and painted bow.

The thing is, there is so much very specific detail on this - like the deer and bird on the quiver, that it’s difficult for me to think that this design did not come from the series production team. While I have no confirmation of this, I highly suspect they wanted her to have a bow of her own, and Disney told them no. I do know that they were only allowed to have her hold a sword in the series if she wasn't actively using it against a person at the time. (Yes, she could be holding it with intent to use, but not actually be seen swinging it on camera at a person. I have a gifset showcasing all the times she held a sword.) So it's not a far stretch to think that they intended to give her a bow, even had a toy designed for it, then were ultimately denied by the higher ups. But toys often get put into production before things get changed in the media the toy represents, and then released anyway.

That moment when you notice at the start of the film that the tower is all bright and colorful but when Rapunzel returns from seeing the lanterns, it’s now dull and monochrome?

Lighting is a powerful mood enhancer.

The first time we see it - dark and mysterious, the perfect place to hide a magical healing princess

vs the establishing shot (the first time we see it after the prologue) - bright, cheerful, idylic

#1 (oooh, this is a good concept art set)

Where can I find a picture of the concept arts with rapunzel holding the crossbow?

Thank you for the link! Yes, I had searched through your tags and what I found got me even more curious and wondering whether there is something more to be known about the plot in itself (beyond characters and their designs) and why it would be "darker". Thank you again for your time!

Well for one thing, it was literally darker, as in color palette. It wasn't as brightly colored and cheerful as Tangled is. Also, man, in that version, Rapunzel threatened Bastion with a friggin' crossbow.

That’s a bit more violent than a frying pan. So there's that.

Hi Bex! I hope you're recovering well! Is there anything from Tangled concept art you wish had made it into the movie? I wish the dress shop scene remained, giving us Rapunzel in a green dress in CGI. I also wish we saw Gothel in the mask coming from Rapunzel at her memorial. I still wonder how the whole plot of Gothel and Flynn striking a deal would have played out. I think would have been so eery with Gothel and Rapunzel at her memorial.

I’m recovering quite well, thank you! Daily, there are things I can’t do at the beginning of the day that I can do at the end, and also other things that I can then do the following morning. (My tummy is all sorts of pretty colors right now. XD)

My favorite bit of concept art, which was drawn over and over and over but never used in the final production, was Rapunzel drawing/painting on Eugene’s/Bastion’s hand.

I adore the green dress, but I know that ultimately they didn’t go with green because each Disney Princess is assigned a color, and green is Tiana’s. (That’s also why Rapunzel didn’t end up in straight pink, like she appears in Lisa Keene’s concept art - because pink is Aurora’s.)

I love the darker themes of the earlier versions, and I’m honestly hoping, if Disney is dead set on making a live action adaptation of Rapunzel, that they go with one of their earlier movie concepts before Tangled became what it is now.

I really love Rapunzel’s green concept dress, I think it’s gorgeous. I would say I wish they’d drawn her wearing it in the show but as you said, they have a budget. But then again, that’s what fanart is for! I’ve seen many fanarts of Rapunzel wearing her green dress, and ALL of them are gorgeous. 💖☀️

Yep!

And I think the thing I love the most is that there’s actually more than one green dress in the concept art!

And when I visited DTVA in 2018, there was this fantastic series concept art of Rapunzel up on the wall by @claireonacloud and she was in green. @cnotes said that they tried really hard to get her in green, but basically the studio wouldn’t let them not put her in her signature color to start the series out.

But that didn’t stop them from painting her on the DTVA wall in green!
