SAF update?

(God I love George)

Ok them talking about the fact they had recorded S2 in a single week, makes me feel so much more ok about the way they've been talking about it.

They've been talking about it like they hated it, so know knowing they had a rough time recording it... Makes that make more sense.

I'm happy that they talked about putting SAF on hiatus! I kind of figured but I'm happy to hear it from the horses mouth! rather than not knowing and thinking the worst!

Shayne also says later that they ARE planning on coming back to D&D! (1:04:30)

(I would be TOTALLY UP FOR THAT!! Y'all know I have been wanting to see Damien actually playing with the rest of the cast (DM!Damien, my beloved, scooch over a bit for Player!Damien <3 <3 <3)

Finally got time to look through the leaked google doc..

What EXACTLY does "reframe cameras" mean.? I knew something was suspicious when I heard them talking about distance in the podcast.. reading through the notes it looks like they had a "terrain" set up...

So I think I can pretty much confirm that this season was supposed to be visual. (unless it was just so they could edit it better? even then WHY would they have to set up a terrain?)

What happened. Why did it change?

Sword AF S2 Finale is here god this cast is incredible. There's got to be another season, I need to know other lores from these characters!

I feel like it's now impossible to expect for another retrospective round table because of the implications of the audio only decision they did. But I'll still hold a tiny hope that they'll give us some sort of heads up on whats next for Smosh DND. I don't want this to be secretly hidden away. :'(

I KNOW! I LOVED SEEING BUG'S FAMILY!!! I hope we get to know more about Dolores next! (that way they can keep Koda for last 👀)

Damn, I didn't even think about the fact we probably wont be getting another retrospective.. I really do hope we get some kind of thing and maybe an explanation for the audio only switch.

If they decide not to do a S3... They might be a little empty in the head. I know a lot of people in the normal viewership don't care for SAF (I've seen yall 👁👄👁) but there's so many people like myself that love that group, and them doing D&D.

I'm praying for a S3 with visuals 🧎‍♀️

Since sword af has ended, how was this season? Did you enjoy it? Do you like it more or less than season 1?

SORRY THIS TOOK SO LONG!!

Ok, so, since I only just finished this season I'm still ruminating on a lot of things and letting them sit with me so this is my first impressions!

First things first, I will always say SAF was and will always be better in video format, I don't think anyone would disagree with me on that. There's so much that being able to watch how the cast's faces light up and seeing how they react makes it so much more fun to watch than to just listen.

BUT, I will say I really enjoyed this season! I got a hell of a lot more moments of Damien and Angela bickering (I LOVE a good bicker <3) and it's apparent Angela spent time learning more about how to play D&D, based on how often she was correcting/telling the cast they had + or - to whatever stat at the time. Loving the nerd arch she's going on as of current (her playing D&D and now trying to learn Fortnite of all things lmao)

(AND OBVIOUSLY ALL OF THE CAST DID SO WELL THIS SEASON! It was plain to see that everyone had a better grasp of how to play this season compared to last, and were having heaps of fun!)

I think S1 will always hold a special place in my heart, it being the first D&D playthrough I've ever finished and all the cast slowly get more and more comfortable around not only each other- but how to play in general! S1 is an 9/10 for me :D

For S2, it was SO GOOD!

I was so excited every Wednesday to see where they were going and what the story was going to be! I loved getting to see them go back to Bug's home and talk to all of their brothers (Nestor my beloved 💙). That and the twist of Ferny now being Furnace? I FUCKING LOVED OMG IT WAS SO AWESOME!!! I really loved the cameo episodes too! Arasha and Ian joining in was such a welcome surprise! I wouldn't be shocked if they do another season with more people popping in 👀

I will say that the story kind of dipped in and out of being totally engaging however, with a lot of "plot armor" moments or Damien letting them get away with too much. I also wish we got to see more characters form last season, where's Rumpum? where's the castle? I wish it was a little more connected with S1 but I still really enjoyed this season! 8/10 :D

I'm hoping and praying with every fiber of my being we get an S3 WITH VISUALS

I just caught the context(?)of her wanting to kill Tungo around 1:32:10. Bug "looking" outside and Damien's cackle after lmao.

The only reason I don't think she was ruminating that idea while they're talking to Tungo because Fernie is already smoking a cigar that minimize him wanting to blow off some steam.

Did she really decide she wanted to kill Tungo because Damien laughed at her? That makes it even funnier lmao!

I hear a cut between Furnace asking what Bug's looking at then when Damien laughs there's also a fast cut after too, I wonder if something was happening IRL that made her want to kill Damien's character

I think it's so fucking funny she decided out of the blue she wanted to kill Tungo lol, even back in S1 I got the feeling she wanted him GONE

For the people that need captions, it's on YouTube now so you can get the captions. It's accesible now. Various DnD podcasts do this with only voices and no video, it's still great. Go give it a chance!

IT IS!!!

I LOVE HOW THE STORY IS GOING!!

If you have ANY interest GO WATCH!

(to my non-hearing impaired peeps- keep in mind that the YouTube version doesn't really have any sound cues that S1 did, BUT it DOES if you listen to it on Spotify! (and I'm guessing other Podcast sites)

They actually did keep their promise on the "immersive soundscape" because it is extremely helpful to me to get into it and actually be able to follow along! (but that version only exists for whatever reason on Spotify(and probably other Podcast sites)

I haven't seen Damien promote Sword AF s2 at all on his socials. Did I miss it? Just wondering why :(

I don't remember him promoting it either. (I could be wrong)

Honestly I'm just waiting to see if we get any info for why everything to do with SAF is weird.

From it being delayed, to it being changed to audio only, to them obviously still playing it at the same table in studio (which makes me SO CONFUSED why they changed it to audio only?? like if they took time to play it in studio, why not have a stationary cam and film it?) to them taking almost a whole week after it dropped on Podcast sites to upload it to SmoshCast on YouTube

There's just too many weird things... I'm hoping they had a REALLY good reason to go audio only.

I’m really upset abt Sword At being podcast form, with no video but more than that, this means i can’t watch it anymore.

Not having the video makes it so much more inaccessible, I’m hard of hearing and need captions to be able to catch more than every other word of what they’re saying, especially when they’re speaking in accents or funny voices. Now since it won’t have video I won’t have the option for captions or if it does they’ll just be set against a black screen. I also have autism and it’s really hard for me to read emotions or social cues based off voice alone and I was able to identify emotions based off of their faces and body language.

With only audio we’ll miss out on a lot of moments like shayne and angela playing patty cake, or angela always looking over damien’s folder.

they took away the best part of Sword Af, and they’re gonna lose a lot of watchers for it’s no longer accessible

But also, Smosh is bad at podcasts. I have tried to listen to Smosh Mouth and so many times I turn it off and wait to be home to watch the video because I can tell I’m missing stuff. Honestly, everyone who posts a video version of their podcast seems to forget that it’s a podcast and we can’t see them. I can’t even imagine what will happen with something like Sword AF, I feel like we’re going to miss SO much by not having a video of it. People keep talking about creators who have DnD podcasts but the point of Smosh is that they’re actors who specialize in improv first and foremost, that’s what’s interesting here, and so much of it is physical comedy.

It sounds like Spencer (and this is no hate to him btw, I love Spencer) wants to push video games (they mentioned that when Trevor joined). So even when video games didn’t get lots of views (the last couple of years Minecraft and Sims did really bad) they still tried it. I also feel like, while Damien loves video games, he gets to do that on his streams. And he also loves board games, so he pushed things like BAF Legacy and Sword AF. But with him being gone (has this been confirmed?) from the games channel, those are kind of falling behind. I love the Love Is Blind video and the who’s the father ones. But I would love it if we got some more intricate games sometimes instead of getting just that. I want them to play something like Bang again (which would be great with the new cast and they would get to do improv for it) and it’s been a while since we had Secret Hitler. I want more proper board games. I love the easy party style games, but I don’t want the channel to be just that

The ONE reason I can think of that justifies Sword AF S2 as a podcast audio-only format is because damien isn't in the office as much. That's literally the ONLY thing I can think of that makes it make sense. Like, I understand that Sword AF S1 didn't get as mant views as they'd expected but they literally destroyed any potential success by making s1 a biweekly release instead of weekly?? And to put it in audio-only format, after pushing its release by 3/4 months- while going completely RADIO SILENT about it the entire time, just put a really bad taste in my mouth.

Maybe it's parasocial to have expectations for a series that I really love but it truly does suck ! I understand that the justifications of budget, the series not getting as much views as other content on the channel- but like, it just sucks!!!! And I'm upset that my silly little game was given this treatment! I loved watching the live premieres of the episodes as they came out, and seeing the cast and crew in the chat and it sucks that might not happen anymore because of the shift in medium!

Hi. Aside from what has already been said about the Sword AF situation, I want to add that it also, yet again, betrays a lack of respect towards the employees when it comes down to it. Higher management deciding that they won't come through on previously made promises because production cost can't be justified? Not cool, though kinda understandable. Sword AF S1 did cost more to make than any other show previously produced on Games, but didn't bring in the big bucks. And Smosh is a for profit media company first and foremost. But then to mishandle the show so badly, so carelessly, dare I say maliciously? That's just a HUGE 'fuck you' to the cast, the crew, and especially Damien. Sword AF was HIS passion project. I'm remembering an interview with a DnD news youtuber in which he expressed so much gratitude that he was allowed to do this show, and how he had big plans for it. I'm also remembering how Kimmy strongly implied in her 'leaving Smosh' video that she was forcibly made crew when she had every intention to remain cast. And I'm remembering the post made on LinkedIn by former Smosh marketing director Dani Howe, who was only there for a few months, about how her "previous employer" created a toxic work environment for her. Why did I drag all that into the conversation? To remind that it's not a new thing. Smosh might be a media company first and foremost, but shit like this is not needed to run a successful company. It's just being toxic.

I don’t know if you’re still accepting asks about the whole Sword AF thing but I want to throw my two cents in and be as respectful as I can.

1. People have talked about not being able to afford a whole crew for filming, but I saw someone point out that Smosh Mouth doesn’t have a camera person credited. The cameras are set on certain angles. They could 100% do this with Sword AF. Even just one angle would be fine. Wouldn’t a video with one angle take as long to edit as an audio?

2. I like the idea of it being posted on Smoshcast. They were meant to make more podcasts for that channel

3. I have seen people bring up the fact that the compilation has 400k views vs the finale having 200k views as a bad thing. But couldn’t that also mean that people who didn’t get around to watching it at the time, did end up watching the whole thing in the end?

4. I saw someone get downvoted on Reddit for saying that the season started off well but they had “endings” at some points that might have led to lower views on the rest of the episodes. But I agree with that. The first 3 or 4 episodes are the ones with the frogs and the turtle, and some people might have not felt hooked to watch the rest. That doesn’t mean you should throw away the whole show, there’s clearly an interest based on the views in the first couple of episodes. They could have figured out what went wrong and led to less views towards the end and somewhat fix it for the second season

5. I think they may use the audio only thing to “cheat” the game which I don’t like. They might have done that with season 1, but it’s even easier to do with only audio

6. The number of played hours according to Chanse sounds like way more than it should be. So I’m also kind of scared that they’re maybe sitting down to play and then choosing to reenact the good parts and forget about the less interesting/funny parts for the podcast

You are putting into words what I've been feeling for a while now. I've been a smosh fan for 12 years and I've never felt more unsure about their decisions. How do they always manage to do the opposite of what the people want? Removing favourite shows like Let's do this and the mockumentary vibe they had on the main channel, stopping BAF Legacy, don't get me started on how they keep forcing Noah down our throats. It feels like whoever is responsible for this is locked in a tower and has no interaction with the outside world lmao. It all boils down to how they don't interact with the community, or barely do. It feels like they care more about being a corporation that a comedy channel. We also have the perspective of a person that worked for them from (sorry I forgot her name)'s linkedin post and it's so disappointing. If I wanted a corporation I'd watch ikeas YouTube channel. I guess that's why I kind of cringe with the most recent main channel videos. It doesn't feel like two friends being funny anymore (it makes me sad to say this) there is the burden of a corporation behind them. They can't blame it on something like defy now can they? I really hope they change how they manage things because I don't like where this is going 😮‍💨
