Stormlight Characters, is the glass half empty or half full?

Ah, the age-old debate! How would Stormlight characters answer such a question?

1. Renarin & Adolin

Renarin: ... Renarin: It depends on the context, doesn't it? Renarin: If you pause halfway through filling a glass, it is half full, but if you pause halfway through emptying a glass, it's half empty. Renarin: It doesn't seem like it's a question you can answer in isolation...right? Adolin: Oh, it's half full for sure! Renarin: ... Adolin: What?

2. Moash & Kaladin

Moash: Half empty. For me. Moash: Half empty for any darkeyes. Moash: Half full for lighteyes, of stormin' course. Moash: 'Cause that's how the world works, isn't it, Kaladin? Kaladin: Mine's half full. Moash: ... Kaladin: They didn't say what it was full of. Moash: Ha! Is it full of-- Kaladin: Full of shit, yeah.

3. Jasnah & Shallan

Jasnah: I think it is rare for something to ever truly be halfway anything. Jasnah: Look closely enough, and it will be more full or more empty, and then you'll have the truth. Jasnah: What do you think, Shallan? Shallan: I think it's both at once. Jasnah: ...Is that a philosophical statement or is it a Lightweaver answer? Shallan: Yes.

4. Pattern & Design

Pattern: Mmmmm, what a human question! Pattern: The answer is always a lie, but always true. Design: They can just count the molecules, can't they? Pattern: But they won't! Pattern: Also probably they can't! Design: Humans are so fascinating. So silly. Pattern: Mmmmmm yes!

5. Navani & Raboniel

Navani: I don't think there's any "empty" at all, technically. Navani: Half full of a liquid, half full of air, totally full in combination. Navani: No scientist gets anywhere by ignoring half of what is present. Raboniel: And with the right technique, air and water can be mixed. Raboniel: So acting like they're separate ignores the possibilities. Navani: Exactly!

6. Dalinar & Sadeas

Dalinar: Half empty. Never forget what was lost. Sadeas: Half full. What matters is how much you have. Dalinar: Shall we disagree on this point in steely determination forever? Sadeas: Obviously.

7. Szeth and Lift

Szeth: Mine is half full. Szeth: But only because others are weak and cannot take the contents of my glass from me. Szeth: I have emptied many glasses. Szeth: Why can't anyone empty mine? Lift: Who's got time to stare at a glass?? I'm drinking that down as soon as I got it, if it's edible! Szeth: There is wisdom in that. Lift: Thanks. Yours was just kinda sad. Szeth: Yeah.

Sanderson if you're reading this, I'll give you like 5 dollars to have Lift tag along on the Kaladin & Szeth road trip.

So WoB the pulse from the Well of Ascension is a pure tone of Scadrial, just like Honor's tone is a pure tone of Roshar. This has implications for the world itself, but guess what? It also means that, long before the advent of recording technology, long before the advent of genre, long before the advent of the electric guitar,

Scadrial had metal music

I'll see myself out

Stormlight Characters Meet an Octopus

As requested by @miss-madithe-baddie :)

It's Octopus Time on Roshar!

1. Kaladin

Kaladin: [stares at octopus] Octopus: [stares at Kaladin] Kaladin: So it...what? Is it one of those creatures that squishes down into crevices during storms? It doesn't look like it has bones. Kaladin: Kinda big though. Would need a big crevice. Octopus: [stares at Kaladin] Kaladin: ... Kaladin: I feel like it's judging me, somehow.

2. Bridge Four

Moash: Well, I don't like it. Moash: An animal with no carapace is unnatural. Rlain: ...You're an animal without a carapace. Moash: W-Well, it's different for humans! We can build houses! Drehy: Maybe the giant squish bug builds houses. Drehy: We all saw it pick up the shell and put it on its head. Skar: That's more fashion than construction, I think. Sigzil: We saw it go into the water. It's a sea creature. Sigzil: Sea creatures don't need carapaces like land animals do. Moash: It's on the land right now!! Skar: Guys, shut up! It's wearing a shell as a hat again! Renarin: It really is quite fashionable.

3. Adolin

Adolin: Sure is weird looking! Adolin: Look! It has little sticky cups under its legs! Kaladin: D-Don't grab it! It's gonna bite you! Adolin: I bet it can crawl up walls 'n' stuff! Adolin: Hey, isn't that something you can do too, Bridgeboy? Kaladin: I use Stormlight! Not sticky vine legs! Adolin: Bet its some kind of tiny Windrunner. Kaladin: It is NOT!

4. Shallan

Shallan: Hush, all of you. Shallan: This thing is beautiful! Gorgeous! Octopus: [abruptly changes color to match surroundings] Shallan: !! Shallan: Talented! Amazing! Shallan: This might be the most important drawing I'll ever do! Adolin: ...You drew me last week for our wedding anniversary? Shallan: [already drawing] And you didn't even change color ONCE!

5. Lopen

Lopen: [staring intently at octopus] Lopen: [staring intently at octopus] Lopen: [staring intently at octopus] Lopen: [concentration face] Rock: ...You're trying to grow more arms, aren't you? Lopen: I didn't know EIGHT was an option!

6. Zahel

Zahel: I've seem those things before. Zahel: Very smart. Zahel: Very tasty. Rock: ...Tasty you say? Shallan: NO

7. Navani

Navani: Seeing this bizarre creature gives me so many ideas. Navani: Dalinar, do you think we should build semi-aquatic vehicles that can go on both land and water and develop color-changing camouflage technology? Dalinar [trying to be a supportive husband]: And perhaps the land-water vehicle could have...tentacles? Navani: No ideas are wrong in the brainstorming stage. Navani: But also no.

8. Dieno (the Mink)

Dieno: [gives octopus a bro nod] Octopus: [gives Dieno a bro nod back] Dalinar: ...What was that? Dieno: Ah, it is nothing! Just two master escape artists recognizing each other. Dalinar: Escape...artist? Dalinar: This creature has done nothing but sit on that rock and occasionally go into that pool this whole time. Dieno: Yet nevertheless, people like us...we recognize each other. Dalinar: ... Dalinar: [doubtfully] If you say so.

9. Dalinar

It is later. Dalinar is walking through Urithiru. Something from above touches his face with a thwick sound. He looks up. The Octopus is looking down at him from the ceiling, one tentacle reaching down. Lift is also in the ceiling. Lift gives him a thumbs up. Dalinar keeps walking.

10. Lift

Lift: Today has been the greatest day of my life. Lift: I had no IDEA there so many vents 'n' shit that someone like you could squish through! Lift: And when you used your dark water attack to push that button? Amazing! Lift: Even I had trouble keeping up with you!! Lift: Truly, you are my new best friend.

Deleted Scene Titled “Moash Redemption Arc?”

Moash: *dramatic and villainous* Join me, Kaladin! I’ll give you one last chance!

Kaladin: …fine.

Moash: I – Wait, what?

Kaladin: I said all right, then.

Moash: *mouth agape* Wh– no, Captain, you –

Kaladin: You offered, didn’t you? I mean if the everyone I am working to protect is going to die, as you say, I suppose I’ve got to find employment somewhere.

Moash: *gears visibly turning in his head* Well – but – it’s just. I’m talking about Odium, Kaladin, you know that, right?

Kaladin: Yes. What else could you have possibly been talking about?

Moash: I…right, of course. So…you’re just, fine with becoming a soldier for the Fused, just like that.

Kaladin: *smoothing out his sleeves* Hmm? I mean, I suppose, you know. Whatever you want to do.

Moash:: That…this doesn’t make any sense.

Kaladin: See, those were my thoughts exactly!

Moash: *confused as hell* …yeah, so…why…

Kaladin: *picking lint off his shirt* I, too, thought to myself “Storms! That certainly looks like Moash pledged his life to a god of hatred, but that, that makes no sense whatsoever! They care about the lives of the darkeyes even less than the lighteyed nobles Moash devoted his life to opposing, and at any rate they are trying to kill all the people who saved his life and who he called friend. Joining Odium would be possibly the stupidest, least-thought-through decision he’s ever made, even including that time he ate that leftover stew that been sitting out since the Weeping.”

Moash: *makes a face*

Kaladin: But then I thought, “Well, Kal, you’ve known Moash a very long time, surely if he’s doing something this drastic, it must be for a very good reason indeed. A reason that is based on solid facts that he has thought through at length after having gotten many hours of restful sleep. It’s not like he’d turn to Odium because he’s disillusioned about something and refuses to talk to anyone about it in any actionable detail, and has decided to place all his proverbial eggs in one basket that happens to belong to a god of hatred who orchestrated this entire war from the start!”

Because of course that would be idiotic. And if that were the case, Moash should probably just shut up and walk back with me and fight for justice for his people before I have to do something I very much wouldn’t like to have to do to him.

Moash: *opens his mouth* *closes it* *unintelligible mumble*

Kaladin: So, very well then. Soldiers for Odium it is. Do I need to do anything immediately, or shall we just get on to murdering people? I must say I don’t own many dark colors, but I’m sure we can stop at a store at some point during our killing spree.

Moash: W– no, I mean, Kal, you can’t…like…be that way. That’s not…you’re…you.

Kaladin: What way is that, Moash? Did you or did you not ask me to join you? Hmm? I said I accept. I presume you are a man of your word. Whom shall I kill in cold blood? *summons Sylblade*

Moash: I…you should. I just. *mumbles again*

Kaladin: What’s that? I couldn’t quite hear you. *leans in slightly* Would it bother you to see me behaving in such a way? Would it disappoint you, or possibly even tear your heart into pieces to watch your Captain fall so far and do such terrible things? Would you do anything, forgive anything even though that is objectively insane, in the off chance that I might see reason, because I am behaving so far beyond anything you know of me?

Moash: *looks away and stares* *more mumbling, scuffs his boot on the ground*

Kaladin: …well

Moash: *pouting and picking up his cloak, already walking to Kaladin* I said I’ll follow you back to camp!

Favorite Musicals of Each Order of the Knights Radiant

We’ve already considered their favorite boardgames. But what about when it’s time to go to a musical? Which musical is preferred by each order?

1. Skybreakers: Les Misérables

They think Javert is the protagonist.

Szeth: Is it not strange that the musical continues for so long after the death of the protagonist?
Nale: Ah, but it is only thus that we see the real tragedy.
Nale: As all of the lawbreakers go on living, without punishment, due the the lawman not being willing to fulfill his duty.
Joret: It’s so horrifying.
Cali: Yes, hence the title.

2. Bondsmiths: West Side Story

It’s about two warring gangs being brought together.

Dalinar: Although it is sad, it is nice that it ends with all of the previously estranged people bonding over their loss.
Navani: And it really is through music that two warring sides can be brought together–perhaps even feel love for each other.
Dalinar: Yes.
Dalinar: Wait, what?

3. Edgedancers: Little Shop of Horrors

Or at least, it’s Lift’s favorite.

Lift: I dunno why Wyndle doesn’t like it–it’s about a plant!
Lift: A hungry plant too, so it has something in common with both of us!
Wyndle: I–
Wyndle: Never–
Wyndle: That–
Wynde: IT WAS SO HORRIFYING, MISTRESS!!!
Lift: It’s kinda in the title, dude.

4. Stonewards: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

They were surprised at how invested they got.

Badali: It may not be warfare, yet the efforts of these children are so inspiring.
Zu: They truly do fight until there is only one standing.

5. Elsecallers: A Little Night Music

Jasnah just thinks it’s neat.

Jasnah: I have to respect the effort of composing each song in ¾ time.

6. Lightweavers: Phantom of the Opera

It’s about art, tortured souls, disguises…

Gaz: I gotta feel bad for the Phantom.
Shallan: What, because his love for Christine is doomed?
Vathah: Because it would suck to live in a sewer?
Gaz: Well sure.
Gaz: But also that one-sided mask.
Gaz: He must always feel like there’s something there in the darkness, something just out of his sight.
Shallan: …
Vathah: …
Gaz: N-Not that I would know anything about that, ha ha!

7. Truthwatchers: Lion King

They went for the costumes and ended up being  blown away by the story.

Rlain: If Simba had just told the truth about his father’s death, all of that could have been avoided.
Stump: Yeah, well, kids are pretty stupid sometimes.
Renarin: Although by running away, Simba did get to be raised by two awesome gay dads, so that’s nice!
Stump: …
Renarin: What?

8. Willshapers: Scarlet Pimpernel

It’s about rescuing innocent (?) aristocrats from being imprisoned and guillotined!

Eshonai: It is truly inspiring to see a group of humans working so hard to free other humans before their unjustified deaths.
Venli: That Madame Guillotine song is really catchy though.
Eshonai: Yeah, you almost can almost understand the killing there.

9. Dustbringers: Wicked

They appreciate the overall message.

Malata: Yeah, there really are two sides to every story!
Ral-na: And just because a power is popularly deemed destructive, that does not mean it is so.

10. Windrunners: Also Wicked

Although their reasoning is…different.

Bridge Four, in their barracks: SO IF YOU CARE TO FIND ME / LOOK TO THE WESTERN SKY
Bridge Four: AS SOMEONE TOLD ME LATELY / EVERYONE DESERVES THE CHANCE TO FLY!
Bridge Four: AND IF I’M FLYING SOLO / AT LEAST I’M FLYING FREEEE
Bridge Four: TO THOSE WHO’D GROUND ME / TAKE A MESSAGE BACK FROM MEEEEE
Bridge Four: TELL THEM HOW I AM DEFYING GRAVITY / I’M FLYING HIGH, DEFYING GRAVITY!
Kaladin (wiping away a tear): It’s just such a good song.

Cosmere Characters in IKEA

The title says it all, really.

1. Adolin & Shallan

Adolin: This place is such a maze!
Shallan: Yeah, it kinda reminds me of my time in the chasms with Kaladin.
Shallan: There could be a chasmfiend made entirely of hex keys around any corner.
Adolin: You’ve already mapped this place in your head, haven’t you?
Shallan: Well, duh.

2. Kaladin & Teft

Kaladin: Ha, look at the size of this bed! What kind of spoiled lighteyes needs a bed this big??
Teft: Kaladin, lad, that’s a bed for two people…
Kaladin: …
Kaladin: I knew that.

3. Sebarial & Palona

Sebarial: Genius, really, setting up all of these fake rooms to make people imagine their homes looking like this.
Sebarial: Makes you want to buy way more than you came in for.
Sebarial: And it all seems cheap, but it sure adds up!
Palona: Mmm…and the pathing really forces you to see everything, no matter what you’re looking for.
Palona: Urithiru is mazelike already–think Dalinar would give you a floor to set up something like this?
Sebarial: Are you SURE you don’t want to marry me?

4. Dalinar & Stormfather

Dalinar: I think it’s good for people to build their own furniture.
Dalinar: I never felt as clear-headed as I did when I dug that latrine that one time.
Stormfather: Bah, this flimsy wood could never stand up to a storm.
Dalinar: Most people keep their furniture inside.
Stormfather: I’m listening and learning here.
Dalinar: What?
Stormfather: What?

5. Lopen & Rock

Lopen: Now, see, people say the REAL fun is the food!
Rock: Ha! These meatballs are not as good as chouta with fried cremling claws, but they’re still pretty good!
Lopen: Of course! Nothing beats chouta!

6. Wyndle & Lift

Wyndle: Oh, this is SO exciting!
Wyndle: Look at all of these WONDERFUL chairs!
Wyndle: I can’t wait to add some of these to my chair garden!
Lift (dragging her feet): Is this the LAST time I let you pick our activity.

7. Denth & Tonk Fah

Denth: You know what I hate about being a mercenary?
Denth: People think you have no sense of style.
Denth: And sure, interior decorating isn’t a big part of our life.
Denth: But just look at this pillow I chose and tell me it wouldn’t look great on any modern couch.
Tonk Fah: Hey, that old lady you stabbed to get that pillow seems to be coming around.
Denth: And people NEVER appreciate the lengths we got to to get a good deal!

8. Szeth & Nightblood

Szeth: I like this place.
Szeth: There is no profane stone anywhere, and the seemingly endless maze of empty rooms devoid of all life reminds me of the inside of my own head, only they took out the screams.
Szeth: And some of the plastic fruit is nice.
Nightblood: That’s great but can we get back to my thing now?
Szeth: That sofa wasn’t evil, sword-nimi.
Nightblood: Then why was its name looking at me with those beady eyes?!
Szeth: I think the umlaut is just part of the spelling, sword-nimi.
Nightblood: I think we should destroy it, just in case.

9. Siri & Syl

Siri: Look at this!! A tiny frying pan!
Syl: No, look at this!! It’s a blue stuffed shark!
Siri: Look at how colorful this rug is!
Syl: I don’t even smoke, but this ash tray is shaped like a COW!
Siri: I can’t believe Vivenna and Kal said we “couldn’t be trusted in the marketplace”
Syl: I know! We make such good decisions!

10. Jasnah & Navani & Elhokar

Jasnah: It is nice of them to include pictogram instructions, so that even men can assemble this furniture.
Navani: Engineering for men. Very progressive of them.
Elhokar: How am I supposed to screw in all these screws with just this hex key?! Also, these dowels definitely do NOT fit in this hole! And I am definitely missing some pieces!!
Elhokar (muttering): I bet Kaladin could build this bookcase.
Jasnah: Should we help him?
Navani: Give it five more minutes.

Lift is the kid who only makes it through because there are meatballs on the other side.

I love how Kaladin can just Say things like “You sent him into the sky, assassin, but the sky and the winds are mine. I claim them, as I now claim your life,” and “Honor is dead, but I’ll see what I can do” off the cuff, not because he’s trying to be dramatic but just because he’s Like That. He can do a superhero landing or cause a glowing glyph to extend behind his glowing form, sometimes both, hitting the ground like a falling star and proceeding to turn the tide of a battle just by being there. Kaladin is literally the walking embodiment of the trope of “the cavalry has arrived”. Whenever he shows up people are certain in that moment that everything is gonna be alright, and the bad guys who’ve been paying attention know they’re fucked, and they’re both right every time. It is an unspoken rule that he must have at least one Dramatic Entrance per book, but sometimes he gets like, two or three depending on your definition. It is also a spoken rule that literally nothing and no one can kill Kaladin Stormblessed. People on both sides are always like “that can’t possibly be true” but then the people who Know are like “oh, but it is.” And they’re right every time. This depressed med school dropout is a force of nature! He can just like, casually drop kick a guy in shardplate so hard that it breaks. He just does shit like that. And then everyone proceeds to be in awe at all the stuff he does and says, as they should, and Kaladin proceeds to continue just being Like That. I’m love him.

Literally the only person who can defeat Kaladin is Kaladin himself

One of the things I love most about the Stormlight Archive’s main trio is that their vibes and attitudes are in almost total contrast.

Like, to look at them, one is a sweet-looking blonde guy with a huge smile, and his cute redheaded wife who’s always making jokes. And then, a few metres off to the side, is this six-foot-four gloomy-looking dude with a severe case of angry eyes.

But then you read the books, you find out that Adolin and Shallan would both 100% murder someone in a shady back alley, meanwhile Kaladin is probably helping save a child stuck in a tree whilst on the way to his nightly stew dinner and therapy session with his 30 best friends.

And let’s not forget the nerdy younger brother who runs straight at a thirty foot tall rock demon the first chance he gets.

As much as I enjoy reading the stormlight archive Sanderson missed out on something when he didn’t add footnotes to the male Alethi POV chapters

just think of the possibilities. the author of Adolin’s footnotes changing everytime he starts courting someone new in Way of Kings until Shallan takes the job.

@nekohiro excuse me but YOUR footnotes need to be preserved for posterity

Who writes Kaladin’s? Sigzil?

The things I would give for Sigzil footnotes that add absolutely nothing to the context but are just him pointing out every time Kaladin or someone else in Bridge Four forgot to fill out the appropriate paperwork. When they start training and Rock says “I don’t fight, I’ll be the cook”* (*note: Despite the verbal contract Rock failed to provide the paperwork necessary for the switch of occupation. It hasn’t come up again so I think Kaladin is feeling charitable these days. - Sigzil)

Moash's morality is a direct parallel to adolin's with both of them killing a man who has hurt their families and they believe will continue to hurt others. The only difference is that adolin has never faced a quarter of a consequence and moash has lost everything which is where their paths diverged

I see your point but also I think the people they killed matter a lot.

Sadeas was not going to stop until he had eliminated Adolin’s family. He threw countless lives away on purpose with the bridge men. He was in many ways a mass murderer without regret or empathy.

Elhokar is responsible for the deaths of people, yes, but I would say it was more out of stupidity than malice. And he was desperately trying to improve himself and be better.

Adolin would not have killed Sadeas if there had been any indication that Sadeas might have left his family alone. But Moash would have killed Elhokar regardless of anything Elhokar did or said.

I also think that Moash lost everything long before he killed Elhokar. He did it the second he decided his vengeance was more important than his friends. And also we don’t know what consequences Adolin might still face for it. That storyline is not over yet.

So like… yes, but also no.
