every time I hear someone say “we should just get rid of physical shops and have everything online” I get a bit angry because
a) physical shops are important for those who don’t have access to a computer/ internet/ ect
b) those “weird” and “niche” shops I love so much don’t have the same vibe online, they turn into just another website
c) I hate paying for shipping
d) it is in fact often impossible to assess the quality, appearance and just how accurate the dimensions of the item are if you want to buy from just an image
e) I kinda want to leave my house on occasion

- the finnish word for skunk is “haisunäätä” and it means literally “stink marten”
- the finnish word for turtle is “kilpikonna” and it means literally “shield thug” or “shield toad”
- the old finnish word for lion was “jalopeura”. it means literally “noble deer”. later it was changed to “leijona” for obvious reasons.
- the finnish word for dragon is “lohikäärme” and it means literally “salmon snake”
Some notes on the last two words here:
jalopeura is actually originally from folk poetry, where it means a moose, but in written language it came to mean an exotic animal. The lion meaning comes from church art and descriptions in the Bible, it was an animal Finns had no idea about back then, so it was named after something familiar. Jalopeura was also the name of the constellation of stars nowadays known as a lion, this might be a really old view that the constellation was thought to be like a moose.
And my pet peeve, lohikääme. Yes, in Finnish there are words lohi, salmon, and käärme, snake, but the so-called compound word is not actually a compound word at all, but a loan from old Swedish floghdrake that means a flying snake. The fly part, flogh, was too different for Finns to pronounce, so it turned into more homely lohi. The drake got a direct translation into a snake, käärme. And so we have a name that sounds absolutely nuts to modern day Finns who don’t know where it originates from. There’s also a second way to spell it, louhikäärme.
