i studied romeo and juliet in school and my english teacher once asked us to consider that the real core of the play is loyalty. who should you be loyal to? your parents? your country? your family’s legacy? yourself? what do you do when those loyalties contradict each other? it always stuck with me. romeo and juliet is not about doomed, young love - it’s about what happens when a senseless blood feud propagates through a family, creating a situation where two teenagers would rather die than disappoint their parents.
